British Iraq abuse pictures proven fake, Mirror says they were maliciously hoaxed but nevertheless PM is standing down with imediate effect.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay! Oh, wrong PM.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, hot off the press. BBC website has it on their Latest ticker but no article yet.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm watching them chew it over on News 24, ITv don't have it yet, PA broke it says BBC.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

DAAAAAAANG

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

good news!

Criminal proceedings?

jel -- (jel), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Good.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Will he be tried for treason?

C J (C J), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

No, they were hoaxed, he did not fabricate the story for himself, it was a 'package'brought to them by a freelancer or agent of some kind.

Speculating now happening at warp speed. Downing Street have said it's a matter for the Trinity Mirror board and they won't comment further.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Ch4 and 5 News have under 15 minutes until they're on air. Mad scramble, ho ho.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, Jon Snow shower of schadenfreude coming right up.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Jon Snow snuck a dig at the BBC into his first sentence too.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 14 May 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like to celebrate this, but have to go kill John Gibson first.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 14 May 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

So more seriously about Mr. Morgan, about whom I only know the name -- are his politics lame, his attitude in general, or both?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 May 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

those pictures looked bad fakes.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 14 May 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

He started as a showbiz reporter for The Sun and was reknowned as a friend of the stars but was also seen as New Labour. The Mirror is traditionally a crusading tabloid siding with the liberal working class Labour trade unionist type, and came down hard on the anti-war tip once 9/11 kicked off.

Piers Morgan also invented 3AM Girls.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 14 May 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Just had a journo from the Telegraph trying to get a comment from Ian Hislop. Hee.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 14 May 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Ridiculata, Friday, 14 May 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

5 Live were broadcasting at one point that they've had the most one-sided text-in ever, with nobody willing to say a good word for Morgan, 20 minutes after inviting messages on the topic.

C4 news have had the Guardian editor and the Sun political editor in, both appeared visibly pleased by the outcome. They've also had the first story from inside the Mirror - Morgan was apparently in a meeting this afternoon where he was told the Mirror wanted to change their position on the photos after today's Army evidence. Morgan refused, and was sacked.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 14 May 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Bloody hell! Those photos are well fake. Shame about Piers though. Fits under the "annoying people who make life more interesting" bracket.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Friday, 14 May 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

the bbc has taken quite the shellacking as of late.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 14 May 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

which were the brit pics and which were the american pics ? I mean were all of them faked, no couldnt be.

anthony, Friday, 14 May 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Definitely not faked on the US end, Anthony.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 May 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, he recently did a series 'tabloid tales' which went behind the various tabloid scandals of the past few years. I wonder how he's going to interview himself.

I bet Naomi Campbell is downing a bellini or two to celebrate.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 14 May 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I bet Naomi Campbell downs plenty of Bellinis nightly regardless of what's happening in the larger world.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 14 May 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

And they weren't from the BBC, bill, they were from the Mirror!

FOR THOSE OF YOU NOT PAYING ATTENTION UNTIL NOW: there were photos splashed all over the front page of the Mirror purporting to be British soldiers doing awful things to Iraqi prisoners. Harsh blow to British superiority complex over behavior in war, "civilized values," etc. It turns out the pictures were hoaxes. Piers Morgan, editor of the Mirror, has resigned. End of story.

Private Eye has great pice about Sun's hypocrisy over this issue. I know, "dog bites man," but still.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 14 May 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The Mirror photos were in crystal clear b&w, from an unusualish angle (ie. no soldiers gurning at the camera) with drops of piss catching the light quite prettily. I guess it's possible there's a squaddie somewhere who's a bit keen on photography and knows how to get that kind of picture but...

I saw it in Asda the morning it came out and knew immediately there was something fishy going on.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 14 May 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

But I also wonder how on earth the Mirror could have been fooled by this 'malicious hoax'

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 14 May 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

But I also wonder how on earth the Mirror could have been fooled by this 'malicious hoax'

This is what I keep wondering - surely anyone with even an ounce of sense, let alone the journalistic instincts which Morgan has, would have at least been aware of the possibility of a hoax and suspicious of those aspects of the pictures? Moral of the story, anyway - fucking with the Army is v v v different to fucking with Naomi Campbell or Vicky Beckham. 'Tis a bit of a shame about Piers, but the Schadenfreude in all other reports on this is palpable.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

He didn't resign though (do you know this?) Tracey said resigned so...) he was fired. The board were a bit upset. Anyway PM is an unpleasant man, so I'm glad he's gone. Though probably not for long. People talking about criminal proceedings are fools though - for example, Any Questions tonight...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm quite sad about this. the photos were obviously faked, though, so...

toby (tsg20), Friday, 14 May 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I always read "resigned" as "fired" anyway. But yeah absolutely - he got kicked out on his can.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 14 May 2004 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

'He was escorted from the building.'
I love that image.

de, Friday, 14 May 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

One of the strange things about all this is that Morgan comes from a military background - I think his hysterical loathing for Blair and the Labour Party (Morgan was a staunch Thatcherite when he worked for Murdoch, and I suspect pretty much still is), while at the same time being the editor of the one 'socialist' tabloid, has totally eroded whatever 'common-sense' and judgement he once had (and he never had v. much.) As others have said, I'm surprised that the Mirror group gave Morgan so much rope w/ which to hang himself, unless they saw it as a convenient way of getting rid of a repulsive self-publicist who has failed to either establish a v. convincing editorial voice or make any kinds of gains against the Sun.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Saturday, 15 May 2004 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Who's going to get the job now though. There's a very limited pool of peopel whenever any of these jobs comes up. Anyone want to give me an outside long odds beton Greg Dyke though. (Yes I know he's not a newspaper man or eve a journalist but he could make a good helmsman, he's a populist; essential for a tabloid, and the right kind of lefty).

Ed (dali), Saturday, 15 May 2004 07:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Rosie Boycott has got to be a favourite though.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 15 May 2004 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose what I'm interested most in about this, and I'm wondering if it'll get much coverage as well - who supplied the pictures to the mirror, and with what motive?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 15 May 2004 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

No idea, Norman.

One issue for any new Mirror editor would obviously be having to be bossed by the loathesome Sly Bailey, a woman so anvil-headed that she makes little recordings of her policy decisions (in her own voice) and then whacks these missives onto an 0870 number which Trinity Mirror staff must then call if they want her 'memo'.

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 15 May 2004 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Piers Morgan is an utter cunt and I'm glad he's gone - AndrewL OTM... I suspect that the hysterical tubthumping the Mirror's done over the past couple of years has done as much to undermine as reinforce the anti-war argument. Interesting that when we did The Daily Mirror - Classic or Dud? ILE came down genuinely on a pro-Mirror, anti-Morgan line which I reckon I'd probably hold with these days. I like what its TRYING to do, I'm not sure its necessarily going about it the right way.

I reckon the Bailey/the Mirror board might use this as an opportunity to steer the ship away from from all this messy controversial war stuff and into something more populist. I'd be annoyed if they did, but unsurprised. On the other hand, if Rosie Boycott was to be made editor I might actually BUY the thing.

The Sun and the Mail are going to tear into Morgan's still-warm corpse like a pack of ravenous hyenas, aren't they?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 15 May 2004 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

genuinely = generally

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 15 May 2004 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt, of course they are. Here's the background dirt parties might have on the other, though:

PM recently found to be having affair with M4rin4 #yd3, much to the consternation of his wife and kids and her husband. But M has ES column so Dacre might leave them alone.

R3b3k4h W4d3 is said to be a carpet-muncher in sham trophy marriage.

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 15 May 2004 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Really? Damnn. I like #yd3. And her husband. I'm just astonished she could have such poor taste. I mean eww.
But I'm laughing at a certain fake-hard-man baldie.

de, Saturday, 15 May 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Graaaaaaanted, de, they both need a trophy so it's perfect.

I'm forgetting who #yd3's married to.

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 15 May 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

My own view is different from some others'.

I think the episode sad. I think Morgan was, 'pragmatically', or 'strategically' or whatever, a pugnacious figure for progressive arguments in this country. He has just lost his soapbox and I fear that we're the poorer.

the bluefox, Saturday, 15 May 2004 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinefox, it's coming to light that there were two major US shareholders in Trinity Mirror that wanted Morgan gone over this.

It's telling that he's not surfaced yet and is believed to be talking to his lawyers.

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 15 May 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Pashmina's asking the question that interests me the most...who made these pictures? Seeing as these pictures seem to have acted as the spur for the worldwide media to find their 'own' torture pictures, leading to reprisals, follow-ups and possibly affecting the fate of thousands of soldiers, Iraqis and two governments is this the most influential media hoax ever?
As the army's denials of the photos seems to rest on the equipment and lorries featured not being present in Iraq does this make it an english hoax? Or were the pictures sent to the Mirror first because they thought it was more likely that an English paper would print them.

Oh, and as for Piers Morgan. The minute I saw the pictures, my first thought was "people are going to die over these pictures" To publish them without verifying them was beyond irresponsible..final nail in the Mirror's coffin.

Click lurrrrrve.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 15 May 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Sad episode in that the anti-war argument must be hurt by this. On the other hand PM is an odious creep and no tears will be shed by me over his demise. I don't think the progressive case, which is in essence a moral one, is helped by being associated with people as obviously amoral and self-seeking as PM.

Surely his friendship with ms #yd3 is too much of an open secret for there to be real threat of exposure?

Hidayglo, Saturday, 15 May 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Oh, hello:

Military police have said they will investigate photographs found in a branch of Boots which appear to show Iraqi prisoners being abused by British soldiers.

The images are reported to include pictures of troops pointing machine guns at handcuffed detainees.

They were found on a digital printer machine in the chemist's branch in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire.

Strathclyde Police officers were called in but concluded there was nothing criminal to pursue.
