AND FOR A TEMPORARY TIME ONLY!!!:
Here is an AVI of the puppies roaming around in the whelping box...
(note: you can hear the puppies whine, and also my mom and i in the background make comments)

On a side note, my mom named one of the dogs Bowie, after David Bowie, and was interested in using the theme of rock songs to give them their surnames when they are shown professionally... specifically David Bowie songs. I suggested "Diamond Dogs", "Queen Bitch", and "Ziggy Stardust", but she poo-poo'ed the ideas for being too obvious. (I can't blame her) She liked "Under Pressure" though.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

the puppies are now exactly three weeks old.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

classic. i always wanted one, but my dad said that it would need obedience training, eat us out of house and home, and then die after only a decade or so. i think our neighbor's costly-to-maintain newfoundland that keeled over at age 8 prejudiced him against giant breed dogs.

oh my god. the puppies are so ADORABLE.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Awwwwww.. that sleeping pic and the one at the top.

How many dogs do you have at home?
Puppies are great, cos they're adorable, and they don't bite.. I get a bit scared of them when they're big, and start chasing me down the street.

***DIES*** of cuteness upon watching video

***REVIVES***

Oh man, they MATCH MY PUG. And he loooooves the ones he meets at the park.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

AW CUTE! PUPPIES! CUTE PUPPIES!

The video is the cutest video ever. Awww. My baby will whine like that at times when she wants something and it is one of the most heartbreakingly adorable things I think I've ever experienced. She will also do another, slightly similar-sounding whine when she's showing affection and it is just the most moving thing.

Thank you for sharing this with us. Puppies are just the best.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for that. Gawd, I do need sleep after all.

Anyway, my border collie's 12 and he lives with my parents, and I miss him like buggery [although I moved out of there about eight years ago]. I'll find a photo, he awsum.

oh db you had SO best not be referring to the truly marvelous plethora of pugses... We will bring Calvin to the Mtn Goats show and he will GET YOU.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Layna, your pug is like Godzilla compared to the dogs I'm talking about.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

My God! 3 great danes and 8 puppies! I hope you have a lot of land outside that house or all those dogs'll drive you nuts.

Not to mention the neighbours. Eeek.

I Wish You Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 07:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Danes are surprisingly cool with small places, if you walk them enough.

Our beautiful black one, Melissa, made it to thirteen, which the vet called "ancient for a Dane."

The best thing Danes do is, if they like you, they grab you by the arm and take you for a walk.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 07:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont like dogs, but i make the exception for danes

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I am in luff wif dee puppies.

Je4nne Ć’ury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I really don't like dogs, but that pic of DB holding the puppy is adorable.

When I was living in Ohio, I would stay at home all day with one of those wolf-dog puppies (and a cat!) and it would bark incessantly and poo everywhere and then tread in the poo and trail it all over the apartment.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

well, you're supposed to take them outside

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

It wasn't mine! The owners would just leave it at home all day.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The owners being the other couple that shared the apartment with us.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

My folks have a large backyard, so yeah, the dogs definitely have a place to run around, and they are walked into town very often. That said, Colin is also OTM, although having a yard is something a Dane would appreciate more than not having one.

They are very loving dogs, but the only problem with them is that they don't know their own strength. They can be bad around very young kids (human kids that is) only because they might love the kid too much, and hence lean against and hurt him/her -- or worse yet, play with the kid, and break his or her jaw. I think part of my jaw still doesn't snap tightly enough because of one time I played with a dane when I was 12 years old.. I can't imagine how much worse it would be if I were younger.

Danes also unfortunately tend to show their yearning to play with you by looking at you then suddenly pawing you in the groin REALLY hard.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I love that they all have moles on their right cheek. Puppies. Gotta love em.

(I'm surprised no one has seen the part about my mom wanting to professionally name the dogs after David Bowie songs in my original post upthread)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe she can name one "Dancing with the Big Boys"

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

It was noted, DB, but we were too much in awe of puppy love to consider glam gods.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know how many of you are familiar with the whole culture of dog showing, but usually dogs at dog shows have a very long professional name, which includes a very long middle name in quotes, usually a phrase. So I was thinking

"John I'm Only Dancing"
"Width Of A Circle"
"She Shook Me Cold"
"Oh! You Pretty Things"
"Moonage Daydream"
"Lady Grinning Soul"
"Word On A Wing"
"Look Back In Anger"
etc.

What do Beeps and Veruca make of each other?

ENBB, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

Beeps loves her big friend. Veruca gets a little jealous sometimes, but takes it out on Sunny and I, not the kid. She always sniffs out the Beeps, and lets her pat her on the back and pet her paws.

AW! Yeah, Danes are still the best.

ALl the pic links above are broken, but Cadence (grandma, and since that post, GREAT-grandma) lived to be 13 before she died 6 weeks ago. It's not surprising at all, and she died peacefully, but it's still a very sad thing. And my actual grandmother died in December, so a lot has changed. Thanks for the thread revive, though. Seriously. :) + sigh.

Mackro Mackro, Saturday, 30 August 2008 03:08 (seventeen years ago)

SS & PP, you have one grogeous Dane!

I don't think 'Intelligent design' can be real if Danes live ~8 years but Reagan got into his lates 80s.

six months pass...

A classic slow news day item:

A South Texas mayor became so concerned about reports of a Great Dane being stuck on a second-story balcony that he alerted emergency workers, went to the location himself, scaled a fire department ladder and entered the apartment to help the dog. The problem was, the dog wasn't in distress. The bigger problem came when the surprised dog owner found Mayor Pat Ahumada standing in his kitchen Tuesday.

''He broke into my house,'' the owner, who asked not to be identified, told the Brownsville Herald. ''My dog is very well taken care of. He shouldn't have done that.''

Ahumada, a dog lover whose zeal for the animals has caused problems before, said a local TV station called him to say a dog was stuck. Ahumada called animal services, the fire department and the police.

''He looked to be stuck on the balcony,'' Ahumada said. ''I didn't know the condition of the dog or if the building was abandoned. ... The animal's paws were hanging out from the railing and he was struggling to get up.''

The dog's owner explained that the 14-year-old dog has little mobility, and one of its greatest pleasures is passing the day on the balcony where it can watch the passing traffic.

In 2007, the city informed Ahumada that his six dogs doubled the city's legal limit for one home. That same year, Ahumada picked up a dog thinking it was stray and gave it to a family. When the original owner asked for the dog back and the family refused, the issue ended up in court.

Two years earlier, before he was elected mayor, Ahumada was charged with theft after taking a dog from the Brownsville Animal Shelter. He claimed the dog was not being properly cared for and the charge was dismissed.
