Have you ever accidentally almost sort of killed someone?

When I was about 13 we used to play football in a field near my house, and after we'd played till we were knackered we would sit on the bank and Tim would play acoustic guitar and we'd talk about girls and music. Nothing unusual in that, except that we were all very well behaved for teenage boys - we didn't smoke or drink or take drugs, just played football. Anyway, one old man used to tell us off if we were within 30 yards of his house, even if all we were doing was talking quietly (we never even left any litter, cos Adam lived next to the field so we used his bin [also his mum had an endless supply of icepops!]). One time I told him to "fuck off" cos I thought he was out of order telling us off for doing nothing wrong; at 13 it was about the most rebellious thing I'd ever done. Anyway, then he had a heartattack and died and I felt like it was my fault for swearing at him. The guilt lasted almost a day. Similar stories of inadvertantly murdering NIMBYs please!

I figure Ronan must have loads of these.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Sunday, 23 May 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

PS yes I am quite drunk, no I did not actually kill the old man, yes he was very old, yes I do regret writing this.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Sunday, 23 May 2004 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

can I count the time I almost choked on a hot dog?

ARL (Adrian Langston), Sunday, 23 May 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Only if an old man died because of it.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Sunday, 23 May 2004 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i have these weird flashbacks of my killing someone but the memories aren't clear. i avoid focussing on them cos they scare the fuck out of me.

i don't know if they are memories of a particularly disturbing dream or if i, y'know, really did it.

mullygrubber (gaz), Sunday, 23 May 2004 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The worst is when you're driving along, being an obnoxious little car star with your shades and rap music, invincible really, and then you almost run over some bastard little kid illegally crossing the street, and people look at youi like YOURE the bad guy because of the rap music!

LC, Sunday, 23 May 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

burns that does

chrisco (chrisco), Monday, 24 May 2004 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

hee hee. these are all potential possiblities for important flashbacks in Stephen King books

Kingfish Disraeli (Kingfish), Monday, 24 May 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was at a patient's house, I startled an iguana that was sunning itself on the dock and it jumped into the water. The next day, I saw a half-eaten dead iguana floating around near the dock. I've felt guilty about it ever since.

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo (cindigo), Monday, 24 May 2004 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I threw a fairly large rock at my then-toddler brother from a decent height. Hit him right in the head...luckily it was a hardened-clay "rock", so it only made a huge hole in his forehead. Luckily it was fixable only with stiches. There's nothing more horrifying, in my own experiences, than having to look at a wailing three-year old with his entire face red in a blood mask.

Yeah, I don't think that's really forgivable, even if I was only six or seven when it happened. In my defense, I was actually trying to through the rocks near him to scare him away, but I guess my aim was shit.

christine, you horrid person.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Monday, 24 May 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Take it easy, folks, I'm over 50 here.

But one time I was playing catch with a friend and the sun had gone down. It was twilight. I threw a very high popper to him and he couldn't find it. I yelled "It's right on toppa ya" and it hit him on the bridge of his nose in the middle of toppa and ya. Broke his glasses in two. He lived.

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 24 May 2004 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I once decided to kill a hobo for the thrill of it. He bit my hand and gave me rabies - a complaint I suffer from to this day.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 24 May 2004 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

on a first date once, this guy knifed a hobo in the park. I fucked him.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Monday, 24 May 2004 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Which one?

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 24 May 2004 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

both. it was good times.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Monday, 24 May 2004 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I have got to visit Texas someday.

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 24 May 2004 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

(all those uninformed pls note I was only invoking an ilx in-joke. k, thx.)

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Monday, 24 May 2004 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I ran over a kid in my ice-cream van. He wasn't killed, or seriously injured (broken arm, fractured skull) but it could have been very different.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 24 May 2004 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I once passed a guy on the street. But it could have been very different.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 May 2004 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Does accidentally being involved in the death of a dog count? I used to play with my friends dog, and once we were doing its special trick, which was when you would throw a ball over the dogs head and she would do a back flip. Well I did it, and there was a funny noise and she walked funny for the rest of the day, whimpering. And then within a week she died.

I felt bad.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 24 May 2004 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

dogs can't etc etc.

While visiting relatives down the country as a nipper I did chase after my sisters with what turned out to be a loaded shotgun.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 24 May 2004 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Never accidentally.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 24 May 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I almost dropped my (now) ex to his death when we were rock climbing. He was at the top of a rock wall and the rope slipped out of my hands. He tumbled nearly all the way down, bouncing off the rocks, before I got control of the rope again. I burned the shit out of my hands and ripped a knuckle trying to stop that rope. He came to a stop about 10 feet over my head. He said, "whooh!! that was fun! You got me? I'll try it again." I told him he had to come down. I think that was the last time I went rock climbing.

fell asleep at the wheel once or twice

sexyDancer, Monday, 24 May 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Me and my three best friends once stole a hot dog cart for a laugh but it all went horribly wrong and we killed some old man with it and went to a home for delinquints where we were routinely used and abused by two dimensional Evil Wardens.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 24 May 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait wait wait. Since when is a fractured skull NOT a serious injury?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 May 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Depends on the skull.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 May 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

one time I hit my brother with my car. He wasn't seriously injured (severed left arm, snapped spine, broken pinky) but it could have been very different.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 24 May 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

*tries to figure out if this is a satiric response or not*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 May 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

This one time I shot Ned in the gut. He wasn't seriously injured (decimated spleen, massive internal bleeding, in the hospital for a couple months) but it could have been very different.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 24 May 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm thinking satiric at this point.

This one time I chopped up random stranger and threw the bits out of a window. He wasn't seriously injures (dismemberment, mutilation, defenestration) but it could have been very different.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 May 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

This one time I mistook a drifter for an elephant and cut off his feet, thinking they'd make a good pair of ottomans. He wasn't seriously injured (chopped off feet, eventual deat from blood loss) but it could have been verdifferent.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 24 May 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

casuistry is still the winner of this thread.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 24 May 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Onimo, what is the movie you describe? Can't recall the title now.

When I was learning to drive on a driving range at my school, one of the driving teachers (well, he seemed 'old' at the time, I was 16) suddenly yelled at me for what he felt was me going too fast. I mean he really threw a total fit over it. I couldn't understand where that was coming from, I mean if the speed limit was 10 mi/hr, I could not possibly have been doing over 15 and it certainly wasn't intentional. Anyway, he died of a heart attack like the next day. At that time I felt God was punishing him for being such a dick to me.

Bimble (bimble), Monday, 24 May 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

This one time I was walking with a friend of mine down a deserted street in the podunk town of Wonder Lake, IL. Suddenly this car drove up with its headlights off and a few guys jumped out and began pummelling him. One of them turned to me and asked "do you want some of this?" to which I replied "No." I found out later that my friend had been hooking up with the girlfriend of the guy who turned to me, and that they had guns in their car. They beat him to a pulp and busted up his ribs really well. Later on the guy who threatened me got meningitis and had his legs amputated. So it wasn't me, but my friend almost got killed that night.

I discovered that dread evening that YOU DON'T FUCK WITH DUDES FROM PALATINE ILLINOIS. just take your punches and let God sort 'em out.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 24 May 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

PALATINE ILLINOIS AIN'T NUTTIN' TO FUCK WIT'

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 May 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Onimo, what is the movie you describe? Can't recall the title now.

Sleepers - which Lorenzo Carcaterra insists is true despite the lack of evidence that any of it ever happened.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 24 May 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I killed a gorgeous coyote last year when it stepped out onto the highway right in front of me as I was coming around a curve. That was a really awful sight in the rearview and I've been kind of heartsick about it ever since.

You didn't call a vet or anything like that?

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo (cindigo), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Animals doing backflips--that reminds me of something that happened to one of my parents' cats. I don't want to derail this thread, so I'll make a new one. (Don't worry. It's a funny story, not a tragic one.)

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo (cindigo), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

...and it's right here.

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo (cindigo), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Fractured skulls - yeah, it's serious, but the kid was out of hosiptal a day later, and considering I actually drove over him (ie, the van went completely over his body, though the wheels missed him) it wasn't nearly as serious as it could have been.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Playing rugby about 5 years ago I was tackled by a bloke and I caught him on the side of the head with my knee really, really hard as I tried to break the tackle. I'm getting up when I see him convulsing and his face is sort of red and purple. His gumshield had flown out and he'd swallowed his tongue. The touch judge got his airway clear, but by then he'd stopped breathing. He had to have the kiss of life on the pitch. One of the most terrifying moments in my life. He was fine after an o/night stay in hospital, thankfully.
