It has come to my attention that people have been putting up with having to load 1000 messages every time they view a page.

This is pure mentalism! Assuming you are logged in, go to Settings and under 'Show messages', choose to display only the last 100 or 50 whatever. This setting is overridden if you have more than that number unread.

I'm not saying there's never a case for starting a 'part 2' of a thread, but...

Dreamy & brainy. What more could a girl want.

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Money? Energy? Drive? Muscle? Musical talent? Access to exciting worlds?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not saying there's never a case for starting a 'part 2' of a thread, but...

ok, i will.

there is never a case for starting a part 2 of a thread!

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Miraculous technique? An enormous priaptic penis?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think those are adequate justifications for a second thread, Nick.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

f to 'thread'

RJG (RJG), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm getting thread deja vu

ken c (ken c), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with mark p.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

so do we.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

This doesn't exactly help if you come in after a weekend or so, and there's 500 messages already accumulated before you go there!

Apostrophe Catastrophe (kate), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

although i suppose you could argue that one uber-long excelsior thread (with say 5000 posts cumulative) would be hard to read in its entirety, if you one day decided to do so. to which i would counter that 95% of the posts on it weren't funny to begin with.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread is getting too long now

Well, regarding the Big Brother threads, it's more 'opening a new chapter' than 'avoiding the large amount of old messages'.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

kate otm; I was just posting that.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It does Kate, because it overides it if you haven't read the messages!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, thanks, Pink, I didn't know that. I think I shall actually turn it on, then. Cheers!

Apostrophe Catastrophe (kate), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

you could just have chapter headings

I THINK SOMETHING SIGNIFICANT HAS JUST HAPPENED AND THE SITUATION HAS CHANGED SIGNIFICANTLY EVEN IF NO-ONE ELSE DOES

RJG (RJG), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

next you'll say it's ok to post dumbass huge pictures because you can turn pictures off.

Ken, that picture - WTF?!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

He's trying to have a piss against the wall using only his mind! i.e. look guys, no hands!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i saw one of them phoneboxes and i couldn't help it.

and took a wee with my mind.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess i was pissed out of my mind.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

he's not wearing enough brown for it to really be effective.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

He doesn't really look perplexed enough. A good attempt, mind.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

it's the arched eyebrow

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, I nearly posted that on that massive Momus/Avril thread thing, but I thought you might get embarassed.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Come on, half the fun is the new thread titles.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

haha! it was kinda embarassing when i was getting the picture taken "er.. this may seem kinda odd but can you take a photo for me?"

i hope everyone who ever visits NYC will take a phonefusion picture to pay homage to the phone. (which actually was fucking confusing and ate 92348923 of my quarters :()

ken c (ken c), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

You had someone take it for you? All this time I was imagining you setting the timer. Wow.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and I have turned on this special thing that lets me only see the last 100 posts. Thanks, N.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i used my "tourist embarassment waiver" for some of the dumbass photos!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

but you can't see it in this one?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread has been rocked by a rouge monitor.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, it must be embarrassing.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

no Rguments

ken c (ken c), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

but then who's the rjgue?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

-the +to obv

ken c (ken c), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"priaptic"

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a verbal tic.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

you don't even have to read the whole thread, just the last few posts will suffice in most cases!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I wish I hadn't waded through 500 posts of that Avril thread looking for the point. Momus and J0hn in their usual Vice love-in, oh go AWAY. I just want the Avril-bashing.

Apostrophe Catastrophe (kate), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

but Avril is cool...

what do you think of the new McFly song, I kinda like it.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Avril blamed the lyrics that she thought were bad on her first album on eating too many carbs! That's the stuff threads should be made of.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

That Avril thread can basically be summed up as "ILE posters in 'easily impressed by philosopher references' SHOCKAH".

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

you've totally missed the point of that thread man - it was about my asshatkicking rhymez!!!!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate OTM upthread about 500 posts srpinging up overnight.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

The only way that ile tensions will ever be eased is with a dance-off. The rhyming battles have their charms, but they're not doing the job.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the new McFly song much better than the old one. The skanky guitarist is getting better looking now he's actually legal. But I'm over that, and it's all about Delays now. Sigh. What do you call a person who makes hats? I know there's another word for a hatter, but I can't remember what it is.

Apostrophe Catastrophe (kate), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

rhyming? dancing? woot how about karaoke too???

ken c (ken c), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

(who wants to be a) milliner?

pete b. (pete b.), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Markelby - Kate didn't realise that the setting is overridden if there are more unread messages that one has set the 'show last x messages' too.

Or are you making the different complaint that in these cases you want to read those 500 but not all the ones you've already before? That's fair enough - if Mr. Noodles or whoever is reading this and thinks it would be easy to code it so it just shows you the unread ones and not all of them in this case, that would be a nice touch.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish Avril would join Guns'N'Roses and they could do a new version of Get In The Ring, that would make my century.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

haberdasher?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

hatteriser

jel -- (jel), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Millinery was the word I was looking for. Haberdasher also good, but it's not just hats, it's any kind of trim for accessories. Hats included.

Apostrophe Catastrophe (kate), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

hatti smith

ken c (ken c), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, is that a Fez or is it more like a Trilby, or is it just a Reni hat?

Apostrophe Catastrophe (kate), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Here are some nice trilbys for comparison:

Apostrophe Catastrophe (kate), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Congratulations, you have just proved that you are sufficient cause for starting a 'part 2'.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just trying to see if it works!

41 older messages are hidden.
Show All Messages

Oh yes, it does. Never mind! Sorry!

Apostrophe Catastrophe (kate), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

There's plain text, there's bold text, some text is red... What have I done?

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

You've gone to plaid.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 21 June 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

And the unread messages are red.
