Why is hotlinking an image baaaaad?

I would think that quoting an image rather than stealing it would be important to those who care about their intellectual property rights.

But apparently not.

So why is this such a big freaking deal?

Catty (Catty), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess stealing bandwidth is even worse than just stealing a copyright. I don't really know.

People love Gravity and Evolution! (kate), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, it's about expensive webhosting bandwidth.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

If the image is already stored online, how does linking to it steal bandwitdh?

Catty (Catty), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What is hotlinking?

the bellefox, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

It still needs to be downloaded from whatever server it's on in order to be viewed in a browser. That data transmission gets tacked onto whatever amt of data the hoster has allocated for the month; linking an image to a popular page can cause you to exceed your monthly bandwidth allotment and cause your hosting service to either A) shut down your site for the remainder of the month or B) give you a huge fuckoff bill for the data transmission.

It depends on what you mean by 'is'

I have found a beautiful drawing of a perpetual motion machine that I'm now scared to post.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i seeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
Does that mean that ilx pisses of a lot of people?
I mean, in regards to hotlinking. Can they track it?

catty at school, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

All I remember is some dude getting upset because Ally hotlinked to a picture on his site, and him threatening to sue anybody and everybody involved with ilx (even after the picture was removed). I don't think anthing came of that, though.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

yea they can track it. however, they can also block it, so anyone who complains is a whiny sissy.

also, see this (long) thread: New York City is for sellouts

Shake Your Halo Down! (ex machina), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

sgs do you have webspace or photo albums or somewhere you can save it to and then post it from there?

I want to see the pretty perptual motion machine!

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's a direct link to the moron's first post: New York City is for sellouts

Shake Your Halo Down! (ex machina), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

god i hate that guy still!http://shooter.net/YOUARESOFUCKINGLAME

Shake Your Halo Down! (ex machina), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes they can track it, it shows up in the server logs.

You can get your own hosting from your ISP, some give you freewebspace which you can use to host pictures or from http://photobucket.com/

Sometimes people (Somethingawful.com) replace the picture you hotlinked with a nasty one.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahahahahaha I love SomethingAwful (although I suspect that Chris V does not).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

A nasty one meaning...?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Does that mean that ilx pisses of a lot of people?
Yes. Those aware enough to notice.

I mean, in regards to hotlinking. Can they track it?
Yes, in a manner simmilar to the LOG page. Check out our most popular links. Not sure how accurate it is anymore.

I don't think anthing came of that, though.
We ended up blocking him from our website.

And that reminds me, is Jon related to a Matt Williams?

no

Shake Your Halo Down! (ex machina), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

What an exciting thread that was! Sorry to have missed it while it was in its feverish heyday. But then, I missed the Charleston too.
.
.
.
He was right, of course, in a kind of way. And wrong in every other. Sort of like people who buy houses next to a busy airport and then complain about the noise. "Yes it sure is noisy. Didn't you see the airport?"
.
.
Just the rantings of someone whose pipe actually isn't big enough.

Sorry kids, I don't have much time for play today, but I just thought I'd stop by and say "Hi". Obviously, I didn't get blocked from your lovely little discussion board...

Today I noticed that you're once again linking to my site... Not that it results in any images being served from my web server... But that is a nice thermal image of Tokyo, no? Pity the poor sucker on a dialup connection.

I'm glad that at least someone here is smart enough to understand that my desire to control when, where, and how my artistic work is used is legitimate.

For the rest of you that call me a "moron", or my personal fave, "soc fucker", I'm sorry that you are lacking in the requisite mental capacity to follow a simple argument and understand that my complaints about your behavior are valid.

BTW, I never threatened to sue anyone here. I did however say that it might be a fun little exercise to be sure that the copyright owners whose work is being stolen on these pages and are big enough to have legal departments that ARE interested in lawsuits, are aware of the rampant theft going on here...

I was being intentionally obnoxious, and having fun running logical circles around a few of the ethically and mentally challenged folks here at ilx. I stopped when I got bored.

I must thank you all for what was a very entertaining afternoon of "taunting the twits". I know, it was immature on my part.... But it was FUN! And I am still right: Embedding content from my web server in your pages here (in violation of my usage policy) is theft of bandwidth and using my photos without my permission is a violation of my copyright.

ta ta for now...

stevem

are also big enough to have bigger worries for their legal departments to handle.

well if anybody, large corporation on down to the smallest free-webspace hobbyist site-owner, doesn't want their images linked, there's a very simple way of going about it.
