Blofeld is having a bad day...

Cheney curses senator over Halliburton criticism

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Typically a break from partisan warfare, this year's Senate class photo turned smiles into snarls as Vice President Dick Cheney reportedly used a profanity toward one senior Democrat, sources said.

Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, who was on the receiving end of Cheney's ire, confirmed that the Vice President used profanity during Tuesday's class photo.

A spokesman for Cheney confirmed there was a "frank exchange of views."

Using profanity on the Senate floor while the Senate is session is against the rules. But the Senate was technically not in session at the time and the normal rules did not apply, a Senate official said.

The story, which was recounted by several sources, goes like this:

Cheney, who as president of the Senate was present for the picture day, turned to Leahy and scolded the senator over his recent criticism of the vice president for Halliburton's alleged war profiteering.

Cheney is the former CEO of Halliburton, and Democrats have suggested that while serving in the Bush administration he helped win lucrative contracts for his former firm, including a no-bid contract to rebuild Iraq.

Cheney's office has said repeatedly that the vice president has no role in government contracting and has severed all financial ties with the Texas-based oil services conglomerate.

Cheney was chief executive officer of Halliburton from 1995 to 2000. He resigned when he became George Bush's running mate.

Responding to Cheney's comment, Leahy reminded him of an earlier statement the vice president had made about him. Cheney then replied with profanity.

Leahy would not comment on the specifics of the story Thursday, but did confirm that Cheney used profanity.

"I think he was just having a bad day," said Leahy, "and I was kind of shocked to hear that kind of language on the floor."

Kevin Kellems, a spokesman for the vice president, said, "That doesn't sound like the kind of language that the vice president would use, but I can confirm that there was a frank exchange of views."

Cheney Defends Use of Profanity

Great headline.

the headline i'd like to see on november 10th:

american voters to cheney: "go fuck yerself!"

If this is not just a sign of meltdown, it's just a sop to the base, the way (arguably; I don't necessarily agree) F9/11 is. Nevertheless, I feel compelled to propose a new name for Cheney, appropriate to his elevated level of discourse - "Dickless"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 26 June 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I kinda like how when Bush gets all Nixon, Cheney pulls an Agnew.

"sop to the base"???

Yeah, he's playing to the Fox News Republicans, you know, the people whose political loyalties are based on who they perceive is better at kicking ass and being obnoxious. One day, they will elect Stone Cold Steve Austin to the Senate, and he will proceed to lay the smack down until some Democrat wises up and rushes the floor with a steel chair.

Cheney might be playing to Republicans in his typically aloof response, but I can't see how his f-bombing a Senator gets them far otherwise. They certainly aren't having an easy time getting, say, their precious energy bill through Congress. And tossing obscenities at senior parliamentarians certainly isn't going to help their cause.

I'm voting for this being a total meltdown on Cheney's part. Now I'm almost pulling for Edwards to get the veep nod, so that Dick will hurl a few more choices words when Johnny goes all Atticus Finch in the debates.

Yeah, I like imagining the anti-Halloween God crusade coming downstairs to breakfast and reading about this in USA Today.. there are a LOT of people who think swearing, especially in public, is tantamount to baby-eating

Yes but Tracer is it worse than abortion? or evolution? I agree it's a nice thought though.

STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN IS A DEMOCRAT! I refuse to believe anything different no matter what the evidence!

J (Jay), Sunday, 27 June 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I know it's suicidal, but sometimes I wish that abortion, death penalty, issues like that, were left ENTIRELY up to the states, no questions asked, just so that these issues didn't have anything to do w/presidential elections. But that's an instinct to avoid the difficulty, not overcome it, and so shouldn't really be trusted.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 27 June 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

No offense intended toward Stone Cold Steve Austin. I picked him based on name recognition and attitude more than anything. How about.. uh.. I think the Rock is a Republican but he's too charming. OK, so, Triple H?

in the new york times magazine yesterday there was an interview with ronald reagan's son, ron reagan. he said that when dick cheney was asked to escort his mother, who has glaucoma, up to her husband's coffin, cheney sort of half-assedly walked her up to the stairs in the rotunda and then left her standing there about six feet from the coffin. what a sweetheart.

i had the thought yesterday--funnily, for the first time--that cheney is very nixonian, from the swearing to the talking out the side of his mouth etc.

Reagan Jr. (who I think is a great human being) said the kindest thing he could say about Cheney was that he was not a very mindful individual. I think the idea was that he was just completely oblivious. Lots of people say that the Cheney reported on now is very different from the Cheney they knew back in the Bush I days. Some speculate that this is a product of his bypass surgery, which has been known to alter peoples' demeanor.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 28 June 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh...explain that last point a bit more, please.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 June 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The older reporters & editors I work with say Cheney has always been a jerkoff and none of them seemed even a little bit surprised by his outburst last week.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Monday, 28 June 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

FWIW, I met Cheney multiple times in 1988. He was not nice, a very serious demeanor that frightened me. I think that was intentional. No one I knew liked the guy much, but they thought he was smart. I don't run in those circles anymore but the outburst didn't surprise me a bit (except that it was on the Senate floor.)
