Not really. There are people who have poor social skills but are nonetheless really energetic and outgoing, and they do fine with short-term friendships and dating. They’re exciting to hang out with, or funny, or spontaneous, or just comically heavy drinkers, and so they make fine random bar friends or wacky acquaintances—just the kind of people who have “tons” of not-too-close friends and get randomly laid all the time. The lack of social skills, sometimes, comes out when they leave the bar, when they’re in formal situations, when they’re working—or when they’re called on to have actual long-term friendships or relationships, and can’t quite make it happen. Plenty of people have “tons” of friends because every one of those friends is distant and wary, and has good reasons not to want to spend time with the person outside of the occasional night out.

The type of person I've just described is usually known as "a stand-up comedian."

So you're saying that heavy drinking is the way to get over poor social ability?

tho i'd never claim to have no social skills.

g e o f f (gcannon), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i have quite a few friends, but I really do lack some important social skills. Mostly just with single, male, attractive types, though.

Better than people who *claim* to have social skills but in reality have no actual friends and never get laid!

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Having actual friends and getting laid are concepts inimical to ahumanism.

poser

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps if you tried engaging in structural rather than subjectivist arguments you might improve.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

meh...

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Johnney! Remember when we were joking in the pub about programming that ILX webbot to say "typical ILX0r things", and seeing how long it took anyone to actually notice? Well, I call you out now! You've done it!

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

so confused.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

g-kit, read this http://k-punk.abstractdynamics.org/ and you'll understand, well, no, you'll see who marcello is spoofing. why he's doing it here is another matter.

N_RQ, Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

argh.

The type of person I've just described is usually known as "a stand-up comedian."

haha, i've known way too many people like this. and all their "friends" usually express in confidence that they feel sorry for these people.

As soon as someone mentions Zizek, I no longer trust them. At all. Ever.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 26 May 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

did i mention how my slovenian friend told me the other day that zizek is very similar to the slovenian word for "boob?"

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 26 May 2005 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

How lamentably typical of Stasist digital Kapitalist slaves to attempt to discredit a valid argument and philosophy by suggesting that the proposer is somehow "spoofing" another advocate of the same argument and philosophy. Unfortunately, striving towards the optimal societal construct, namely ahumanism, will by definition involve brickbats from smug, satiated ignoramuses; but such tortured monkeys in hell are easily fended off and herded back to their complacent, dead "lives." After all, who would want to live the sort of lives "lived" by the neo-triumphalist (but in reality Hayekist) scum who populate most of the rest of this thread? They will be discarded promptly, and gladly.

I dont think I've got terribly good social skills, because if I did, I wouldnt be sat at home on my own getting pissed half the time, avoiding going out, or getting drunk when I did. Would I?

Yet somehow I still have mates and a partner. I dunno. They must just put up with stupid old me.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 27 May 2005 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)
