Someone has just driven into my car!

So, I was on my lunch break, and I'd just had a nice long chat again with the random girl I mentioned on the crush thread. I was driving out of the car park to get back to work, and this bloke just pulls straight out of his parking space without looking. BANG!

Arse.

He hit me on the driver's side, but behind my seat, which I guess was lucky. The car still seems to be drivable, but there's a very very large dent in the driver's door and the panel behind it.

I've never been involved in any sort of crash as the driver before, so the whole thought of dealing with the insurance and getting it sorted out is stressing me out a bit. Things I know I have to do: write it all down *now* whilst it's still fresh in my mind.

That sucks. I hope you don't have any injuries. Have fun with the red tape. My father was in an 'accident' last year, and I don't think the whole thing got resolved.

The Popish Plot (dymaxia), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

Calm down, dear.

michael winner, Friday, 19 August 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

No, thankfully, I don't have any injuries.

(I have to say, though, the last time I was injured in a car crash it basically paid for most of my time at university)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

bummer.
but i love the way you linked 2 threads

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

this sounds like a pretty simple case for insurance anyway - if he hits the side of your car backwards it's easily shown to be his fault 100% so it should get resolved pretty quickly

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

Did you get the other driver's registration number, name, contact details and name of his insurance company?

Any witnesses?

Take pictures of the damage to your car.

C J (C J), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

Argh! that is the sUx0r! How awful. Are you alright? No whiplash or shock or anything?

however, on the other hand, Jared Harris naked you did get to talk to the cute girl! Well done.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

dude, getting hit has always been great for me! pretty stress-free, all things considered. it's when it's your fault that it gets sketchy and gnnngh.

just give your insurance people a call right away and they'll be very nice and helpful. when this has happened to me, i've been given a hire car (with aircon, cd player, electric windows, central locking - all the stuff my atual car doesn't have) for FREEEEE which is great fun, because i got to rag it round and feel like a RICH PRAT with a DECENT CAR. seriously, i LOVE getting my car dented by some goof. it makes my month.
my favourite time was when somebody pranged the back of my free hire car a few days later. and that was hassle-free too! how i laughed. seriously, i honestly laughed.
don't panic. it should be stressless.

He was actually pulling out *forwards*, so god knows how he didn't see me.

I have all his details apart from his insurance, which he didn't have on him. He let me see his driving licence to confirm his name and address were correct.

No witnesses - well, there were probably lots, but I didn't think to flag any down.

I'm uninjured, although I'm feeling a bit hyper at the moment, which is probably the shock.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

oh forwards is just the same too - you won't need any witnesses the damage etc would be quite clear.. was his car dented too?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

It certainly wasn't anywhere near as damaged as mine was - the only *obvious* thing was that his number plate fell off.

My manager has just said I can go home a couple of hours early to sort out the insurance claim. Woo!

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

Just back from the repair shop - they can't fit it in for a fortnight or so. Bah. At least the thing is still drivable.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

Glad you're OK FP! Take pictures of the car. All of the car, damage & the rest of the car too. After an insurance job, my car came back with further damage to another part of the car" :-S

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

I will do, some time over the weekend.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

and then post it on the what does your car look like thread

(is there one already? if not why not?)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Yikes, no insurance on him at the time? I would have wanted a police report! If it's in a parking lot they won't write anyone a ticket (so you're not the bad guy who just screwed the other guy over), but they'll write down details and if anything screwy happens mr. officer will be there to testify for you. I guess if it's a guy you'll see around and you trust him to actually have insurance it's no big deal..

mike h. (mike h.), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

He seemed very genuine. He showed me his driving licence to prove his name and address were correct. His phone number's right, too - I checked it in the phone book.

It would have taken ages to get hold of a police officer - god knows where the nearest one would have been.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Mike H, are you american? I don't think you are legally obliged to carry yr insurance documents in the UK.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

HELP IVE BEEN STUNG BY A WASP IN THE EYE

pappawheelie II, Friday, 19 August 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

You're not obliged to carry *any* documentation with you at all.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

you only need to be able to produce it at a police station within 7 days or something.

if you have everything though it'd save you that trip if you get pulled over, obviously.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

I forgot, you do need to carry *one* piece of arguably-documentation. The tax disc.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

oh FP! I am so sorry for you today. First TC is the worst. Here in California, they happen to everyone; sadly with some frequency. Thankfully they are usually like yours, fender-benders and no injury to your person other than the shock of the whole affair. The car will get fixed & paid thru insurance so put the whole thing behind you and now you can say you're not a virgin anymore! California attitude workin' here. Have a happy weekend.

Wiggy (Wiggy), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

fuck! sorry to hear that, FP. but you're ok, which is the main thing. and, like everyone says, don't fret it. that's what you pay those great big insurance premiums for.

a bus scraped my car a couple of months ago, when it was parked outside the house. i know it was a bus because of the tell-tale magenta paint up the side. grr. but i have no witnesses and can prove nowt. luckily, i know a very, very cheap and brilliant bodyshop in glasgow, who did such a good job that the rest of the car now looks a bit shabby in comparison.

i'm still keeping up the pressure on the bus company, though. i'll get nowhere, but fuck it, i'm a vindictive little bastard with a grudge ;)

is there a "what does your car look like" thread? go on, someone else start it.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 19 August 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was just being paranoid. The laws on car insurance and such vary by state: around here, you're supposed to have proof of insurance in the car at all times. A little googling brings up this site: http://www.iii.org/individuals/auto/a/stateautolaws/

I think the police can write you a fix-it ticket or even give you a fine for not having it with you. I've met people who don't keep it in their car because of theft concerns, but I really don't see that as too much of an issue since it would still require some serious social engineering to get anything other than your name and policy number.

But yeah, it's usually no big deal, no need to be paranoid. I've known someone who was given completely fabricated insurance information after an accident and another person who had his car hit by someone who was likely an illegal immigrant near a construction site. It was likely an honest mistake in the latter case, but my friend was skeptical of the construction foreman's claims that he'd cover any damages.
