I have just spent 15 minutes in there and my nose is running and I am itchy and I think my eyes might be bleeding.

Yes, I have heard of pizza (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

What is it?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Were you looking for eyeliner?

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

It's a place that sells cat dander and mustard gas.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

It is one of those places where I'll end up looking around for a while but I never buy anything. The allure of mustard gas cannot be denied.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

wow, mindmeld, i was just ordering stuff on sephora.com

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

For Adam?

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

BLESS YOU!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

i actually, just changed my mind - i dont really have an extra $115 laying around

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

I was having a bet with myself that Spencer would be the first to answer this, he loves retail threads!

Yes, I have heard of pizza (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

I be shopping.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Philosophy

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Philoshopy

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

I once wanted to write an essay on the monochrome "anti-design" design of Philosophy, McSweeney's, and OK Soda.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

jaymc, I fear you lead too exciting a life.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Jaymc, don't forget: Crate & Barrel c/d

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

I was in a musical about Mies van der Rohe.

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

I played a gutsy cabaret singer.

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

" It's a place that sells cat dander and mustard gas.
-- Spencer Chow (spencercho...), August 30th, 2005 3:15 PM"

Bwwwwhhhhaaaaa! that is funny! Adam/Spence: I love Sephora and think it's classic, but I have the same itchy allergic reaction when I go in the place. Same with those, those, people who try to spray something on you as you walk through the perfume department on your way to buy oh, handkerchiefs. That is the dudlyest dud!

Wiggy (Wiggy), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Actually, Spencer, I don't think Crate and Barrel quite fits into this aesthetic because its simplicity is more of a modern, functionally minimalist aesthetic, rather than a self-consciously "generic" look that seeks to announce "this is not a flashy ad."

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

The LOOK that the woman gives me when I walk in!

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Crate & Barrel is sort of a celebration of design, surely. Design and simple living!

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure if that's what I'm saying, but okay!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

Jaymc, do you know MUJI?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm agreeing with you, dummy!

xp Muji!

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

I like Muji jeans. There, I said it.

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Maybe Crate and Barrel is modern while the others are post-modern.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

I have no idea what Muji is.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Kiehl's too.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

i got confused by the names and i thought jon started this thread and got confused. jon doesn't wear makeup!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

Neither do I!

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

yup

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

MUJI is a japanese store with sorta BLAND clothes

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

www.muji.co.uk

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Sephora.com has this thing once a year (I think in Oct. or Nov.) where there's a 20% off code. That's the good time to order anything you want from there.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

MUJI is a japanese store with sorta BLAND clothes

STEP off!

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

No one is understanding the "irony" factor.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

I just realized I really don't know anything about retail stores or products.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Muji's branding/packaging is very anti-brand.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

OK, I will take your word for it, Spencer.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

Looking for examples, I came across this lovely map:

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

hey adam, how many anorak's from muji do you have?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

hey adam, how many anorak's from muji do you have?

What sort of a question is this?

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

i hate cosmetic lines where they won't show you the prices upfront. i'll go high end drugstore, but i get irritable when it gets all department store counter-y where they try to stick ten glitter laden q-tips in your eye before telling you shit about how much it'll cost ya. i have only walked past Sephora though (we just got them here last year) - it is kind of like that, right? i don't know why i let these things inimidate me.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

Kim no! No glittery pokes in the eye to blind you so you can't see the prices. Sephona is all about DIY. You go in there and CAN have help IF you want it, or you can just be on your own and test and browse and get all glammed up for the evening and buy nothing. The only place they don't hound you and chase you around offering advice. Everything is clearly marked with a price and they carry all brands including their own "plain-wrap" stuff some of which isn't bad at all. It's not a bad hoity toity place at all, but it is very smelly cuz of all the spraying and sampling going on.

Wiggy (Wiggy), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

oh damn, really? that's bad news... for my wallet.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, see, I'm the least girly girl in the world, but I LOVE Sephora. Wiggy is right. It's all about the DIY and trying the little samples that you want and no annoying women shoving powerderpuffs and spritzers in your face. Hard on the wallet, though. Oh yeah.

Dare turned me on to it, when she went nuts in the one in Islington the last time she was here - it was our birthday so we were buying each other eyeliner and stuff.

However, the massive fuckoff one on the Champs Elysees (yes, I know I spelled that wrong, I can't even spell in English, OK?) is THE BUSINESS!!! I could spend days in there. And I don't even wear makeup.

The smell doesn't bother me but then again, I like the smell of Lush, too.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 07:14 (twenty years ago)

I've only ever been to the one in Islington but i picked up some nice glittery eyeshadow, lovely emerald green chubby eye pencil and some ox blood coloured nail varnish.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 07:48 (twenty years ago)

They do the best eye pencils ever. Smooshy kohl is the best thing ever, really wide pencils for rock panda eyes.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

I bought toothbrushes from Muji and they were the hardest, most masochistic toothbrushes I've ever used.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 08:06 (twenty years ago)

sephora is a bit aromatic due to the perfume but it's got nothing on lush, which gives me a reaction if i even happen to be downwind of one of the stores.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

the one in islington is closed. boo. but i got some perfume for like 40% off when they went out of business. yay.

was in the store in paris (but not the flagship) yesterday trying to buy sunblock. they didn't have what we wanted, so we just used a little of the samples on key spots. very naughty. i love sephora.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 09:38 (twenty years ago)

I bought toothbrushes from Muji and they were the hardest, most masochistic toothbrushes I've ever used.

Awesome!

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

This is from the sephora site, the filename of the image is "5797_hero.jpg"

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

I saw they were closed as well but there are other Shiseido outlets within walking distance of home so nae bother.

I use Kiehl's for shampoo/cleanser/conditioner/lipbalm/masques/bath scrubs; Shiseido for face/brow makeup, but oddly none of Sephora's thousands of perfumes were The One - the hard-to-find Guerlains and Comme des Garçons that I like and/or use are elsewhere.

Muji is good for tabi socks and is so there for people who WILL NOT shop in the Gap but cannot afford APC. Good bath stuff too.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if his product line qualifies as very anti-brand. I mean he did try to break a door with his elbow after nearly getting into a slapping match with the designer.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

people who WILL NOT shop in the Gap but cannot afford APC

Good people, one and all!

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

I got a nice dark green soap dispenser from muji when i was last down. Is there an APC outlet in London?

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

They sell it in Joseph stores but the boutique in Ledbury Street is GAWN.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

What is APC?
I got some nice pens and hair clips from Muji, but I agree that their clothes are sort of blah, except men's pants er trousers.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

I just went to sephora.com and am AMAZED by this:

like characters out of a dostoevsky novel?!

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

i have DIRT at home. smells like you could eat it.

Lupton Pitman (Chris V), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

I love Faux Cyrillic!

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Everyone knows that the abused and generally impoverished women in Dostoevsky's novels wore shit tons of purple glitter pencil eyeliner, wtf Maria seriously.

Also yeah Dirt smells like freaking caramel candy. It's disconcerting to want to eat your own hair, or someone else's.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

bitches be shoppin

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

I was in two different sephoras this weekend, sort of by accident, because my mom and sister were visiting. I ended up not buying anything at either one, but I did walk away with a couple of samples, including a bit of pricey spider vein removal cream. Of course, I'll only be able to use it on one little spot on my leg, but I still love free stuff.

I smelled almost every single perfume there, which was kind of hard on my head, but eventually I bought Maybe Baby perfume at the Marshall Fields counter instead.

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Chicks in Dostoevsky novels are admittedly pretty hot.
