The seahawks have won, so its time to start the two weeks of endless speculation and hype. WHO YA GOT, Steelers or Seahawks?

JD from CDepot, Monday, 23 January 2006 03:01 (twenty years ago)

I honestly didn't know the Seahawks moved to the NFC until last night.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 23 January 2006 03:03 (twenty years ago)

Steelers by 11, and I don't need my lucky quarter to tell me.

truck-patch pixel farmer (my crop froze in the field) (Rock Hardy), Monday, 23 January 2006 03:05 (twenty years ago)

right now i say steelers by a touchdown.

JD from CDepot, Monday, 23 January 2006 03:08 (twenty years ago)

Steelers.

I was at the CDepot today! you fuckers owe me a Pet Shop Boys album, I got home and the case was empty.

dar1a g (daria g), Monday, 23 January 2006 03:09 (twenty years ago)

Steelers beat Seattle in a fairly close game. If they do so, they beat the three best teams in the league all in a row (Colts, Denver, and Seattle) with all of those being road games. How's that for impressive?

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Monday, 23 January 2006 03:10 (twenty years ago)

xpost

aww im sorry, was it sealed or not?

JD from CDepot, Monday, 23 January 2006 03:38 (twenty years ago)

they keep me in the back, im not sure of the return policy

JD from CDepot, Monday, 23 January 2006 03:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it was sealed. an import. I have no idea.. What a pain, I don't wanna drive all the way out there again. it was only $6 but I really wanted the one song. that place is still pretty cool though. I got an awesome Senegalese rap compilation & the first Liars record & an anthology of Linton Kweisi Johnson. "since you been gone" came on & like everyone in the store was singing along, it was really funny.

dar1a g (daria g), Monday, 23 January 2006 04:14 (twenty years ago)

Seattle. Close game probably. Let's say 29-24.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 23 January 2006 04:19 (twenty years ago)

BTW has a team who went 13-3 EVER gotten as little respect as Seattle. They had an online poll during the Steelers-Broncos game and only 11%??!?! of the people picked them. More PEOPLE picked Carolina?!?! I mean okay the NFC West is weak, but that doesn't mean that they are.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 23 January 2006 04:21 (twenty years ago)

the anthony thomas model bears went 13-3 and got much much less respect than the seahawks.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 23 January 2006 04:31 (twenty years ago)

I guess for me it's hard to respect the team because 1) they didn't look all that great vs Washington and 2) the only people I know from Seattle are lazy ass fans like, uh, they're in the playoffs dude, uhh.. yeah, go football, whatever. I was sort of wondering if they sold out the stadium for the NFC title game or not.

dar1a g (daria g), Monday, 23 January 2006 04:38 (twenty years ago)

Seattle played pretty well today.

Mitya (mitya), Monday, 23 January 2006 05:06 (twenty years ago)

Steelers = team of destiny

i'm still looking forward to the Puppy Bowl

kingfish kuribo's shoe (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 23 January 2006 05:13 (twenty years ago)

Seattle has the loudest stadium in the league (xpost)

The Bears got no respect, because they're offense is shit. Seattle is a much better balanced team. However, the Steelers seem really focused and determined, and their defense should put a lot of pressure on Seattle, so I'll go with them. Yeah, the Steelers feel destined.

Super Cub (Debito), Monday, 23 January 2006 05:14 (twenty years ago)

they're = their

Super Cub (Debito), Monday, 23 January 2006 05:15 (twenty years ago)

Seattle is under-rated, but i still think they were a weak 13-3. Regardless, i knew they would win today, alexander couldn't possibly have two concussions, and hassleback played a good game. but i like the way the steelers play, and a lot of NFC teams were kinda phony this year.

JD from CDepot, Monday, 23 January 2006 05:22 (twenty years ago)

2) the only people I know from Seattle are lazy ass fans like, uh, they're in the playoffs dude, uhh.. yeah, go football, whatever. I was sort of wondering if they sold out the stadium for the NFC title game or not.

..which is obviously the team's fault, and deserve to be disrespected for that. (As for the "not looking good" in that one game.. well, why don't you just claim for that for the season, then? Some have on I Love NFL.)

That said, you are right... NOW, people are excited about the Hawks here, but before a game ago, there was far more excitement in Victoria, B.C., Canada about the Seattle Seahawks than in Seattle.

Dom iNut (donut), Monday, 23 January 2006 05:41 (twenty years ago)

like Seattle ever gets respect

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 23 January 2006 05:51 (twenty years ago)

I once worked pretty hard at figuring out what the word 'respect' meant but now I think it's become nearly meaningless. the best sense I can make of it in football terms is, do people expect the team to play well, or not. I am in DC so I only saw their games vs the Redskins this year and based on that.. well, no, I don't expect them to beat Pittsburgh.

dar1a g (daria g), Monday, 23 January 2006 06:01 (twenty years ago)

After seeing the Paul G. Allen pep rally sixty seconds before kick-off, I hope that the Steelers begin the Super Bowl second half 32 to 6.

Who's the guy with the really glamorous curls from Pittsburgh? Women EVERYWHERE want to know how he keeps his curly hair so shiny and curly. I don't watch football, but I caught a glimpse of his hair and -now I'm a fan! He's dreamy!
Um, therefore I guess I'm rooting for the Steelers, but I used to live in Seattle and feel like I should cheer for the Chicken Hawks.
Whatever. I'm going to a poetry reading next Sunday, so ...I cheer for the Samoan with good hair! Post pics of him!

ng-unit, Monday, 23 January 2006 12:46 (twenty years ago)

Are you people serious about this Seattle thing? By people I mean like 2 of you. Granted, I don't live in Seattle so I didn't see every single one of their games but I've seen about 6 of 'em, curiously enough, including the aforementioned Redskins debacle, all regular and haven't seen them play in what I'd deem an impressive fashion. Good, yes, and Alexander is impressive certainly but come the fuck on, you're gonna act stunned that people are like, "Actually, they were a pretty weak 13-3." If you're going to play nothing but crappy teams all season, you gotta beat them more decisively than the Hawks did. This has very little to do with the quality of Seattle as a city (also, yeah, Seattle is notorious for being the loudest stadium in the nation and is generally a sell-out crowd).

That all being said, they've played extremely well during the playoffs and I'm not sure why anyone was picking Carofuckinglina over them. Talk about your false grails. Either of 'em, really.

BECAUSE THE STEELERS HAVE BASICALLY GOT THIS WRAPPED UP, WHY ARE WE DISCUSSING?

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Monday, 23 January 2006 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Got any lead-pipe-cinch stock tips to go with that football pick, Ally? Wait, didn't you start last week favoring Denver before switching to PIT?

truck-patch pixel farmer (my crop froze in the field) (Rock Hardy), Monday, 23 January 2006 14:11 (twenty years ago)

I think that, for a revitalization of the halftime show, we should have a three round, bare-knuckle fight between Pat Summitt and Mike Ditka.

Steelers by 10. Heinz Ward will have two touchdowns.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Monday, 23 January 2006 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Sea Hawk or Seahawk may refer to:

* The Osprey
* Armstrong Whitworth Sea Hawk, a British carrier-based fighter aircraft of the 1960s
* The Seattle Seahawks, an NFL American football team
* The Sikorsky SH-60 Sea Hawk, a current US Navy helicopter
* USS Sea Hawk (SP-2365), a US Navy patrol boat of 1917-1918
* SC Seahawk, a single-seat floatplane
* The fictional USS Seahawk
* The Sea Hawk, a 1915 novel by Rafael Sabatini
* The Sea Hawk, a 1940 movie starring Errol Flynn
* The Seahawks, nickname for the athletic teams from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

THERE IS NOT AN ACTUAL ANIMAL ANYWHERE ON THAT LIST.
I CALL SHENANIGANS.

TOMBOT, Monday, 23 January 2006 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Except of course for the osprey, who differs in several respects from the other diurnal birds of prey, and has always presented something of a riddle to the taxonomist. It is often known by other colloquial names such as Fish Hawk, Sea Hawk or Fish Eagle.

TOMBOT, Monday, 23 January 2006 14:37 (twenty years ago)

It's Nightlife. I know it's prob not the best but there's some good stuff on it. am I somewhat responsible for where this thread has gone by bringing up the Pet Shop Boys?

ok, this is the rare moment I wish I knew my celebrity pop culture better.. who are Ronde & Tiki Barber and why aren't they ruling the world?

Dom iNut (donut), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 01:02 (twenty years ago)

only a seattlite would ask such a question!

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 01:06 (twenty years ago)

Ronde = cornerback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (AKA the cute one)

Tiki = running back for the New York Giants (AKA the ugly one)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 01:07 (twenty years ago)

jk - ronde and tiki barber - twins, went to uva, ronde's a db for the bucs, tiki's a rb for the giants, got some mvp 'consideration' this year. were in an amex (i think) commercial a couple of years back about how they twins and girl at counter sez 'o yeah i can tell you apart - you're in the superbowl this year, and you're not', i can't remember if this was the year the giants went or the bucs (bucs i think). personally i'm drafting ronde before tiki.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 01:10 (twenty years ago)

damnit, I was hoping they had a #1 hit talk show together or something.

Mind you, a "seattlite" would know better than me.

What would a "donutlite" know is another question, entirely.

Dom iNut (donut), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 01:27 (twenty years ago)

I think it's pretty obvious that Tiki is the cute one.

Apropos of not very much, Seattle (well, Seattle-Bellevue-Everett) apparently has a bigger minority population than Pittsburgh, even counting out Asians. Pittsburgh of course has nearly twice the black population, but Seattle has a sizable hispanic population, and Pittsburgh has next to none.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 30 January 2006 20:21 (twenty years ago)

I'll bet there are branding reasons for keeping the races on a South-Southwest axis, though. Some of the exceptions can be explained by seeking influential media markets.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 30 January 2006 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Yes. Regardless of where the races themselves are though you have to admit it is no longer a South-Southwest sport and the fans span the whole country. I am not condoning this, btw.

not a whole lot, you're right. but doesn't that make the exclusion of the PNW all the more striking? i don't think it's entirely or even mostly an image thing, i guess. are there even tracks near Denver (is there an altitude problem?) or the Twin Cities?

Today espn are calling this Superdud, but as far as Deeeetroit is concerned, these a two good teams to have play in XL....Pittsburg, whose fans are rabidly gonna flock to the motorcity, with or without a ticket, and Seattle, whose never been in it.

My wife and I went to the symphony Thursday night, and went down Woodward on the way home, and I haven't seen Woodward look so good (albiet empty). What the bankrupt city does after XL is another story.

They were trying to tear down the Motown building in time for this week so they could have another parking lot. Wasn't quite there Thursday.

btw...Mike Downey of the Chicago Tribune had this to say about those who bad mouth the Superbowl being in Deeeetroit;
