I am trying to get away for the weekend with my gf at some point in the next month or so. I am thinking of New England or maybe upstate NY. Anybody have any good ideas for cities/town and also places to stay in this region? Possible places I've been thinking of -- portland, boston, rockport, hudson valley. Probably small town/city type thing, but again boston could be good too. I'm open. My max is probably about $150 a night for lodging. Thanks.

If you can work out where the hell it is...
which states are part of new england

it's not "new england" by the standard definition, but i like kingston a lot, and i know for a fact that there are a couple of B&Bs in the area.

i've stayed here -- nice house, good breakfast, cute dog, and the people who run it are very nice.

Michael,

I think you might enjoy the Berkshires or Western Vermont. If you go to Boston, consider staying in Cambridge.

All the best,
Your friend Peter

thanks for the kingston idea ms. chicken. too bad the b&b's website is down. I shall give them a call.

Any other ideas?

kate from the b52's place in/around woodstock!

kate's b&b might be too expensive for mr. mills' price range (although she sang on one of his albums, so maybe she'll cut him a deal!)

Burlington, VT!!

Cute, bustling "city" on Lake Champlain, right between Vermont's Green Mountains and not too far from New York's Adirondack mountains. Good place to use as a base for excursions into "cuter" Vermont.

If you're looking for wilder nature and more roughneck charm, get thee to New Hampshire and go poking around in the Whites Mountains.

Woodstock, VT, is aggressively quaint. Norwich, VT, is perfect in so many ways. Basically, VT and NH both are totally fucking awesome.
