socks in bed - classic or dud?

today i woke up and realized i still had my socks on and was suddenly overcome with a wave of revolt. i scrabbled at my feet and quickly got them off and pulled the covers back up over me leaving just my eyes to see, and watch out for whatever the next calamity might be.

Only if it's really cold.

If it is cold then a fresh pair of socks before bed can be very welcome.

Hate being too warm in bed. HATE being in bed with somebody wearing sox.

You've Had Your Chances (noodle vague), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:03 (nineteen years ago)

i thought this was shaping up to be a kitbashing thread, but maybe i'm not in the minority after all. hoorah!

teh_kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

If I go to bed wearing socks (which I often do in cold weather) then I am frequently consumed by the horrible feeling that something is eating my feet from the ankles down. Then they must come off. And I wake up with socks strewn all over the room.

Going Through The Motions (kate), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

It is NOT SO BAD! I quite like the illicit feeling of "hee hee. I still have my socks on. BUT I'M IN BED! ahahahahaaha", and I roll over and chuckle hysterically into my pillow. Then it subsides, and then I wiggle my toes - and I've still got my socks on!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhahahaa!

I must admit though after an hour or so your feet start feeling bit claustrophibic and it is generally best to take them off if you're intending to actually sleep. Keeping them on for a NAP however is CLASSIC!

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

The other person wearing socks can be kinda erotic. But they must be clean.

Going Through The Motions (kate), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

You... disgust me.

No but seriously! Having socks on in bed seems like it could be the start of an adventure! Why do you have your socks on? Is it because you're about to get up in the middle of the night to follow some KIDNAPPERS? Or are you perhaps going to wake up everyone in your dorm to have a MIDNIGHT FEAST? Maybe you're going to run away to the big city with your possessions tied in a hanky (never made much sense out of that one). And - it's a little cosy too!

The feeling when you take them off, as well, is GRAND.

I wouldn't want to wear them all night, as I have a strange idea that your feet should BREATHE during the night - which is silly, as they do not have small lungs in each toe for goodness sake.

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

x-post

I've had a few nights now when I've kept my socks on, otherwise the temptation to warm the ice blocks that are my feet on Chris's lovely warm person is too strong.

Usually I end up taking them off during the night because my feet overheat, but this hasn't happened.

Going off on a tangent we finally gave in trying to deny the inevitable and put the heating on last night, so maybe I won't get such cold feet.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

> I have a strange idea that your feet should BREATHE during the night - which is silly, as they do not have small lungs in each toe for goodness sake.

But taking off your socks once in a while is probably an excellent prevention for foot fungus.

If it's really cold, I wear CLEAN socks to sleep - so comfy! But apparently I kick them off in my sleep anyway.

Having sex with someone wearing socks: COMPLETE AND UTTER DUD.

Roz (Roz), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

Poll: after some time in bed, your feet are overheating so do you take off your socks using (a) your fingers or (b) your toes?

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

My above was an xpost to Steve by the way!

I don't think I could do "it" with someone in socks.

May I suggest an alternative? LEGWARMERS! You just pull the bottom bit down over round your heel - foot and toes have space to breathe and wiggle about but you also get some lovely WOOLY WARMTH. Try it! Legwarmers!

Also, you look like a CHAMP.

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

xpost Oh no, no legwarmers ever. ever. Although that's more of an aesthetic choice than anything to do with keeping my feet warm.

I never remember how my socks come off at night either.

fingers, definitely! using toes is almost as bad as the whole keeping-socks-on-too-long-in-bed problem to begin with! they never really come off smoothly that way - especially the first one, which must be finagled with an agility-inhibited sockfoot - and you feel like a berk.

tiit (tiit), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:34 (nineteen years ago)

When it's cold, the best way to stay warm in bed is to put on a hat, natch. You lose 300% of your body heat through your head, so a wooly cap helps immensely in keeping your temperature up, especilly if you don't pull the covers up over your neck-knuckle. It also gives you a reason to hang onto that Phillie Blunts skully you haven't worn since 96.

It's the lazy and immoral way to become super hip. (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

IT'S A BED! IT'S GOT A DUVET! THAT'S WHAT KEEPS YOU WARM!!!

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

Ek. I rarely if ever wear socks in bed. Maybe a t-shirt. No, not around my feet. I only wear clothes if I'm too lazy/sick to take my clothes off.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

I love wearing a hat in bed. That I'm clearly in favour of. Because I hate pulling the covers up over mine head, because then I cannot breathe. But I want mine head to be warm.

Going Through The Motions (kate), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe its all the time I spend sleeping outdoors, but I can't stand a hot bedroom, It has to be cold outside the cocoon of hat, socks and duvet.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

I used to wear socks to bed in the winter all the time, simply because I wanted to be warm. Then at some point I was convinced by a girlfriend that this was madness, and now it feels really weird and uncomfortable to do so.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

Show of hands - who wears a parka and snow pants to bed?

It's the lazy and immoral way to become super hip. (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

what the hell are you people doing to your socks that sleeping in them disgusts you?

i love sleeping in socks and in the depths of winter i often go for a 3 sock option - knee high or over the knee under mid-calf high under ankle sock. cold feet = no sleep

a friend of mine and i have a long standing disagreement about sex with socks on - i say its preferable, she says its totally white trash.

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

31g (31g), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 23:00 (nineteen years ago)

i feel really uncomfortable wearing socks in bed, all constrictred and toes-jammed-together (not that i'm some crazed wearer of too-small-socks, there's just less of a sense that my toes can wriggle wherever they want, I guess?) - but then my feet get really cold! and i can't manage to keep a hot-water-bottle still at my feet! but then i put on oversize bedsocks and even those feel wierd and wrong and not-for-sleeping-in! what is a girl to do. :(

i am a very cold person so i literally need socks. my feet are freezing cold as i type and i have thick socks on. i even used to sleep with a winter hat on. (i am one of those poor circulation types)

t0dd swiss (immobilisme), Thursday, 26 October 2006 01:55 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, in cold weather, I loves me some soft, clean, fuzzy socks to wear to bed.

I can't just pile on a duvet because for some odd reason, my thighs are burning hot, calves are okay, and feet are icy in the winter. For the past couple of years I've been living in places with cold winters but no central heating, so I wear a cashmere turtleneck and silk undershirt to bed with panties and cosy socks. I love going to bed, especially after a hot bath in the winter.

Socks on a lover probably wouldn't bother me, but I've never encountered anyone wearing socks to bed. I don't wear socks to bed when sexing, but that's probably because whenever I do, the room climate is too warm for socks.

I wore socks in bed last night but was too hot after half an hour, so I took them off (with my toes!)

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 26 October 2006 08:48 (nineteen years ago)

Last night, I had to take the socks off when I went to bed, as they were too tight and constricting and were doing the ankle-biting thing. I think this has to do with how much I've had to drink, and also how much walking I've done, as my feet swell.

Going Through The Motions (kate), Thursday, 26 October 2006 09:25 (nineteen years ago)

two of our three cats take turns sleeping on/at my feet at night. the problem with this is one of them has a foot fetish and spends a good part of the night nibbling my toes and the other bites my feet like a viper if i move an inch in my sleep. i usually wake up in fetal position at the top of the bed.

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 26 October 2006 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

my cat sleeps with me on my pillow! But since he's around 18 pounds it's like having a third person in a double bed. no wonder I'm so grumpy every morning.

I own an expensive sleeping bag which I sleep in while on multi-day hiking trips. I always wear socks when I am in it, to reduce the amount of soiling to the insides.

Sleeping bags filled with goose down are difficult to wash and easy to ruin - most professional cleaners are unfamiliar with them and ruin them, too. Ergo, classic for me.
