Xenophobic Workmates

I'm shaking with anger and frustration. A colleague of mine is sitting behind me bitching about her little girl having to visit a mosque as part of a school project, and one of her curriculum books is about a Muslim boy.

She is outraged at this - "Why should my child learn about other religions? They are just trying to shove other cultures in our faces."

She then began an intolerant rant about asylum seekers with their "huge houses and welfare checks, phoning their relatives in Pakistan and telling them to come here because it's all free"

I turned round and muttered something along the lines of "Maybe the school is trying to change attitudes like this", expecting a wave of support from the five or six other people round about us, but they looked at me as if I'm some kind of monster.

"Why are you sticking up for Them?"

I couldn't even answer 'cause I'm shit at debates and I know I don't have the words to change these peoples opinions. Instead my lip started wobbling out of sheer fucking frustration and I had to turn back round and compose myself.

I wish there was just ONE THING I could say to stop this kind of mince in it's tracks and see them lost for words.

Bastards.

We've just been through a huge diversity phase at our place, which is pleasing to know that they're trying to educate the stupid people.

Rumpsy Pumpsy (Rumpie), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 11:35 (nineteen years ago)

Not xenophobia, just completely misguided. A colleague of mine was boasting about how he was speaking to some kids on his way into work one day. "I had a good deabte with them. I aksed them, why THEM? Why are they the ASBO generation? Why do they have to be the ones going round causing trouble?". My response was similar to Rumpie's, I Wanted to say "THEY ARE THE FUCKING ASBO GENERATION BECAUSE FOGIES LIKE YOU CREATED THE ASBO LAWS! JESUS, YOU'RE IN YOUR EARLY THIRTIES BUT WERE YOU NEVER YOUNG!?" but I didn't.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

First, ask them if they are Christian. Ask them if they're *good* Christians.

Then ask them if they believe in Charity - you know, one of those good Christian virtues.

If they try saying some kind of nonsense like Charity only extends to other Christians, ask them to read the story of the Good Samaritan. Then ask them if the Samaritan was Christian. (If they think not, then remind them that the Samaritan in question wasn't a Christian.)

(OK, maybe that's too suble a theological point, and also depends on their actually being "Christian")

Not xenophobic workmate, but a xenophobic student...

There's this mature-age student arsehole who has muttered his moronic ideals on more then one occasion. Apparently the Japanese own Australia and real Australians are banned from holding koalas and going into Gold Coast jewellery shops! Hilariously, this cunt is studying Tourism like me.

Even worse, this guy got on the Tourism Students Liason Council thanks to a half-arsed undemocratic vote (but that's another story).

I tried getting the cunt off the council but the Tourism office said I needed "evidence".

Now I've gotten off track and rather annoyed.

I'm gonna have a cuppa tea.

put your headphones on and turn it up loud. not very proactive but I've found that you usually can't change these people's mind (at least not through debate) so it's not worth upsetting yourself over. Instead just live a better life by example.

First, ask her to provide a concise history of religion in Britain to support her "ignorance is bliss" view, perhaps with reference to burning Catholics. Then ask who she means by "Them", pointing out that majority of British muslims were born in Britain, pay taxes here, etc. Then mention the white Britons in Spain who are currently demanding the right to claim Spanish benefits for pensioners. Then point out she's a fucking idoit, because for one thing asylum seekers aren't allowed to buy houses.

Then arm yourself with some more useful facts from here...

For example:

Asylum seekers receive benefits below the basic benefits level. A single adult receives only £37.77 per week in addition to accommodation and utilities – this is around 30% below the basic level of Income Support for a UK citizen, which is generally considered as the minimum level of income necessary to maintain an acceptable standard of living. Those with additional needs (such as pregnant women, families with young children, people with disabilities, victims of torture and the elderly) are also not entitled to additional special needs provisions or ‘passported’ benefits on the same terms as UK citizens.

According to a Reader’s digest Mori Poll (November 2000), most people also overestimate the amount of financial support received by asylum seekers, believing that they receive on average over £110 per week – nearly three times the actual amount.

Section 55 of the new UK Immigration and Asylum Act 2002 states that, asylum seekers who do not make their application ‘as soon as reasonably practicable’ after arrival are not eligible for any support, even if destitute – leaving many asylum seekers without any food or shelter. Yet there are very valid reasons why applicants do not apply upon arrival. For example, many are not familiar with the application procedures, and may fear that making an application while still at a port is likely to lead to immediate deportation.

Many asylum seekers have a strong desire to work and professional skills and experience to contribute at all levels of the UK economy. However, under UK policy they are prohibited from working to support themselves and their families while their claim is being decided.

Under the ‘dispersal scheme’ introduced under the 1999 Immigration and Asylum Act, asylum seekers are sent to regions around the UK to relieve the burden on the South-east of England. They are sent to areas with existing available accommodation - often those with surplus housing which local authorities are unable to otherwise fill.

Then get her sacked, then send her a witty email telling her to learn to spell "cheques" correctly in her next racist diatribe. I can't stand people who can't be arsed to learn English.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

Ah. That might explain the "welfare" crap - she's barely getting by working, and resents people who she perceives as "not having to work" and living off the tax coming off her meagre earnings.

Sometimes, to deal with these people, you have to understand *why* they think the things they do.

I mean, it probably doesn't make it any easier to have to work with her, and put up with her outbursts.

If you can at least see where she's coming from, you can try to tailor your discussions with her, to work on changing her core beliefs, rather than just getting in rows with her or getting aghast with her.

Going Through The Motions (kate), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

It's curios how her bile is aimed exclusively at immigrants rather than the many English purebred upper class trustafarians who have never had to lift a finger.

"She's got young kids and struggles on a really shitty wage"

So maybe she should claim some of that VAST PILE OF BENEFITS that you can get just by asking!

I'm now having to be v. careful opening this thread, because if anyone saw me reading that poem on a work 'pooter I would be in serious trouble. If she's using her work email to forward racist material, she at least deserves an official bollocking.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

Jesus fucking Christ that poem.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

x-post, Hello Sunshine is well, partly right - apart from the "getting her sacked" bit - becuase what is that actually going to *do* to her, except make her even MORE resentful against these "immigrant-loving liberals" (because that is how she would see it.)

Arming yourself with the facts is a pretty good weapon.

I had my view on assylum seekers totally rearranged after that job at St. Mary's where I worked in close contact with them. Once you are dealing with people who are seeking medical treatment for being tortured, you kind of take a different view on it. Especially when you discover that the people most likely targeted for that kind of treatment by opressive regimes are the intelligensia - frustrating when you're working at a hospital with a chronic lack of staff, and here are trained medics who are not allowed to work.

But anyway, that's another story. Or maybe it is the story - that closer contact with the feared "these people" is the only thing that will change their minds. And you can only hope that her son is getting this education, and might work to change his mum's mind.

Going Through The Motions (kate), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

FWIW this strikes me as a case of actual racism rather than xenophobia

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

A single adult receives only £37.77 per week in addition to accommodation and utilities – this is around 30% below the basic level of Income Support for a UK citizen, which is generally considered as the minimum level of income necessary to maintain an acceptable standard of living.

This is roughly the same that I used to get when I was on the dole 6 years ago, although I think it was nearer £43 a week then (don't know if that was based on my circumstances being considerably different to those of an asylum seeker or a location thing or what).

;_; (blueski), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

Wow! Hello Sunshine, those facts should be posted to every household in Britain. I attended a conference on asylum seekers a few years ago with my poppa and they rattled off facts and figures concerning how results, enthusiasm and concentration in primary schools in Sighthill improved when asylum seekers started to move in.

A lot of the information certainly changed some of the perceptions I held.

Rumpsy Pumpsy (Rumpie), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah Kate, if folk like her were seeing the brutal truth then perhaps they wouldn't be so quick to assume asylum seekers have some kind of easy ride.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 12:28 (nineteen years ago)

That poem is more than just a "snidey" dig at asylum seekers, it's downright racist. Why is Pakistan mentioned? Are there any asylm seekers from Pakistan?

DG (D_To_The_G), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

Entitled Illegal Immigrants Poem, the text describes how a migrant comes to Britain "poor and broke" and makes money by claiming welfare benefits before inviting friends from his home country to come and join him. The email also contains numerous references to a boy named Jimmy and his "cursed cafetiere".
