May your resting place be a filth-ridden ashpit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

i didn't even know that he was still alive.

i agree 100% with the sentiments wr2 where his corpse rightly belongs.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

he gets the gasface, finally.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 23:36 (nineteen years ago)

"Although Botha's security forces killed more than 2,000 people and an estimated 25,000 people were detained without trial and often tortured, he refused to apologise for apartheid and denied he had known about the torture and assassinations."

How will the GWB legacy compare?

It's the lazy and immoral way to become super hip. (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 23:46 (nineteen years ago)

His grim visage behind a John Chancellor evening news broadcast is one my enduring memories of childhood.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 23:48 (nineteen years ago)

H2-H4 (H2-H4), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 00:00 (nineteen years ago)

excellent. chalk another one up for grimly's round-the-world grave-pissing tour.

good fucking riddance, you cunt.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 00:03 (nineteen years ago)

Just reading his Wikipedia entry, I can barely believe that something like Apartheid actually existed during my lifetime.

Anyway, good riddance.

scotstvo (scotstvo), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 01:06 (nineteen years ago)

nice to be reminded that the cold war kept nazis like him in power into the 1980s!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 01:15 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't he sense the mood and country had changed, and basically abdicated in favour of someone who could actually undo apartheid without prejudice? (i.e. De Klerk)

For that, RIP.

(shoot my theory down by all means)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 10:08 (nineteen years ago)

They are giving him a state funeral nonetheless.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 10:13 (nineteen years ago)

Truth and Reconciliation innit?

Dadaismus (Takin' Funk to Heaven in '77) (Dada), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 10:14 (nineteen years ago)

closure, even.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 10:16 (nineteen years ago)

The fucker left office because he had a stroke.

The Real Esteban Buttez (EstieButtez1), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

OK, his family have turned down the state funeral.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 13:13 (nineteen years ago)

Because some black people were invited?

Dadaismus (Takin' Funk to Heaven in '77) (Dada), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 13:17 (nineteen years ago)

roffle

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

mandela has made some magnanimous comment (not sure if he said more; this was what i was told at work by tonight's obits sub) - something about how PWB will be remembered as the man who began the process of the end of apartheid, or similar. i'd have expected no less, but O WOW, how good would it have been if he'd come out and said: "aah, fuck off, y'dead wanker" and flicked the Vs?

i can dream.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 2 November 2006 00:09 (nineteen years ago)

would never have happened, sadly. Mandela can say whatever he likes beacause hey, he's Mandela, though I am sure quiet roffles are being had round his gaff. Botha is rotting as I type. Jolly good job, too.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 2 November 2006 01:20 (nineteen years ago)

Just reading his Wikipedia entry, I can barely believe that something like Apartheid actually existed during my lifetime.
Anyway, good riddance.

shit like that still exists!! pick a continent (not antartica)!

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 2 November 2006 01:24 (nineteen years ago)

Mandela seems to suggest my theory wasn't so far wide.

Obviously, he knows more than me about it.

I didn't know about the stroke.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 2 November 2006 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

pick a continent (not antartica)!

Europe.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 2 November 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

I always feel that cheap shots after such a person has died just reflect badly on the person making the comment. For that reason I dread Thatcher's demise.
Do all you can to oppose them when they're in power and actually doing stuff you disagree with. Probably some of us did just that. History has judged Botha and he's been irrelevant for 20 years or so, his death doesn't change that. Jumping up and shouting 'good riddance, you cunt' is idiotic.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 2 November 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

There's a Cambridge college which has sworn to throw a massive party upon the death of Thatcher. More than a little immature IMHO.

(Oh, but they're doing it 'in jest', so it's OK...)

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Thursday, 2 November 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

Fuck Thatcher. I'll be among the "idiotic" and "immature" raising a glass to that grizzly old cunt's demise.

ONIMO's losing the plot (GerryNemo), Thursday, 2 November 2006 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

OTM Onimo - That makes two of us idiots.

Louis, you didn't have to live through that era. There are many of us who did that will cheerfully be raising more than one glass to her passing.

(I had a soft spot for Dennis, though)

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Thursday, 2 November 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

Do as you like.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 2 November 2006 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

The time for raising a glass was when G. Howe stabbed her in the back or when she lost the leadership.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

Oh I did then too, and for when she had a stroke and the docs told her to stfu. Shame she was replaced by another cunt.

ONIMO's losing the plot (GerryNemo), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

**and for when she had a stroke**

Oh right, so you make a habit of being a twat then?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

Fuck her. The cunt ruined families all over this fucking country and that hurt didn't stop the day she lost her job.

ONIMO's losing the plot (GerryNemo), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks for the history lesson.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

fuck you too

ONIMO's losing the plot (GerryNemo), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:08 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks for your good wishes.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

raising a glass != throwing a MASSIVE, ORGANISED party, guys. I don't dispute your right to appreciate her passing or contemn her life's doings, but planning a goddamn RAVE for her death strikes me as being a bit much, actually. Gah, whatever, I don't object to its actual existence, each to his own...

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Thursday, 2 November 2006 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

And, to be pedantic, the first 3 years of my life were spent under Thatcher, not that I noticed... ;-)

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Thursday, 2 November 2006 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Thursday, 2 November 2006 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

(x-p) I began my education in 1979 and finished it in 1998. What a saga, eh? Highlights include : disappearance of free milk >>> teachers striking >>> school unable to recruit an English teacher for the 2 years I was doing my GCSEs (and associated supply teacher horror) >>> teachers striking again >>> new govt hurrah >>> abolition of student grants.

Anyway, another feature of my childhood was my Mum and her anti-apartheid stuff and her Free Nelson badge, so the most I could possibly feel about PWB kicking the bucket is nothing at all.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 2 November 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

I'm with Onimo.

ONIMO's losing the plot (GerryNemo), Thursday, 2 November 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

History has judged Botha and he's been irrelevant for 20 years or so, his death doesn't change that.

History could occasionally do with a reminder.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

A hell of a lot of people in Scotland will party when Thatcher dies.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

And England. And Wales. And Northern Ireland. I don't think we've got the monopoly on being fucked over by the evil cow.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I just said Scotland since that's where I live. But yeah.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

(and South America?)

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

Is there any ex-PM that had or would have had such 'celebration' of their life's work, on their demise?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

at the risk...

Say wotcher like about Blair, he didn't make it policy to fuck you, personally!

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

Even blair doesn't inspire as much hate as Thatcher. (maybe because if he wasn't in power things would be even worse under the tories?)

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think it was ever personal with Thatcher, she'd have had to have seen us as people to make it personal.

ONIMO's losing the plot (GerryNemo), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

She saw the people! as "one of us" or "not"

SHUT UP BRITISHES

manute lol (sanskrit), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

It'll be interesting when she does shuffle off this mortal coil. Tebbit and the Mail will be demanding a state funeral, but if they hold one there will be thousands of people there who turn up to set off party poppers, throw eggs, tha sort of thing.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe they should just turn up to it, and do nothing more menacing than look inordinately happy.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

Dressed as clowns?

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

That sort of thing, yeah.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

I think Tebbs will go before she does.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

LOL at the Botha thread turning into a "THATCHER WAS A BITCH AND NO WE DON'T MEAN TERI (HISTORY IS STILL RESERVING JUDGEMENT)" thread.

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

xp

ONIMO's losing the plot (GerryNemo), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

TERI, HOW COULD YOU????

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

So lame, but I imagined Mandela saying 'am I Botha'd?'

I was just thinking about Botha etc. the other week when reading about evil family that owned Sun City who now rub shoulders with the Geldofracy.

As to Maggie, the legions of songs written about her are her responsibility because of her policies, as is how she will be remembered and why her demise will be celebrated. The rate we're going we'll all be microchipped etc. by then and a smirk will earn some kind of fixed penalty.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

I would rather that Botha rested in peace... I fear the existence of a walking corpse Botha.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

Dude, you may have given me a NaNoWriMo idea!

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

Many Bothan spies died to bring you this information..

manute lol (sanskrit), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

Jumping up and shouting 'good riddance, you cunt' is idiotic.

so are most things in life: war, capitalism, the desperate scrabble up the housing ladder. however, flicking the Vs at a dead racist fucker makes me feel slightly happy for a second, so there.

when thatcher dies, i will be throwing the mother of all parties. if i spend large parts of it conga-ing around the room with onimo, kerr etc, that would rock.

i'm sorry: being dead doesn't negate a lifetime's cuntishness. this is why people invented the concept of hell, remember?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

When Thatcher dies there will be lots of people commenting to the media (as always happens when someone dies) saying what a great PM she was etc. A lot of TV's will be smashed. We should really have a thread now on what we would say when she dies then see what actually happens when she does.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

And I nominate Grimly to start it :)

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, we've never discussed the death of Thatcher ever on ILX.

(why can't you start it? It's your idea)

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

hopefully, coverage of maggie's death and funeral won't be as saccharine as that of her good buddy ronnie reagan.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

I think Grimly would do it much better than I would. I'm rubbish at starting threads.

I, for one, was bitched out for expressing sadness at Reagan's death. Sadness that it happened 25 or so years to late to do any fucking good.

Any time there is less evil in the world, even by a marginal amount is cause for celebration.
