"City of Daughters" is so underrated

flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 13 September 2013 16:04 (eleven years ago) link

three weeks pass...

A new song is up!

https://soundcloud.com/mergerecords/destroyer-el-rito/

What do people make of it? Is anyone familiar with Sr. Chinarro?

will.i.an (cajunsunday), Monday, 7 October 2013 17:39 (eleven years ago) link

that's rubbish. i am not sure but maybe the only spanish music that works for me is flamenco. it has also the advantage that it doesn't have lyrics. spanish singing usually turns me off, more than most other languages, i don't know why.

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Thursday, 17 October 2013 19:48 (eleven years ago) link

Wow, there are so many interesting wrong things in that post

Okay, so this album has suddenly clicked. I think when it came out there was a lot of anti-retro sentiment flying around and I became too caught-up in this record's reference points and influences to really enjoy it properly. Kind of loving it now.

lol dl weren't you the one who started the thread about how strange it was that ILM liked this more than pj harvey

乓乒 (gr8080), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:06 (ten years ago) link

heh, i don't think i started the thread (could be wrong). i remember mucking in a bit at the time of the lists that year but mostly it was getting in the spirit of EOY ruck fever (and really liking Let England Shake obv).

a beef supreme (dog latin), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:13 (ten years ago) link

ah i was wrong so tell me, why is Kaputt better or worse than Let England Shake?

a beef supreme (dog latin), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:14 (ten years ago) link

;)

乓乒 (gr8080), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:15 (ten years ago) link

god that actually feels like a long time ago in music terms even if it was only less than 2 years ago. feels like lots has changed since then, which is a good thing as i felt like the wider music schema didn't seem to be moving a whole lot from my POV.

a beef supreme (dog latin), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:16 (ten years ago) link

funny that people are calling this a "cold" record. I see what they mean, there's a clinical production 'sheen' and a distance to it, but it's also so WARM sounding. You know how 'Being Boring' by PSB sounds like getting into a car and putting the heating on on a cold day?

a beef supreme (dog latin), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:22 (ten years ago) link

this is a pure balearic shores on a warm evening record IMO

Destroyer's Kaputt is a truly timeless record; its music the score for all seasons.

乓乒 (gr8080), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 13:53 (ten years ago) link

the last time I was really into Kaputt was summer 2012; before that, winter 2010-1; now it's winter 2013-4... maybe I'm just on an 18-month cycle

Not A Good Cook (bernard snowy), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 14:10 (ten years ago) link

... but when I get a "winter" vibe off the album it's from e.g. the long instrumental intros to "Kara Walker" or "Bay of Pigs" (yes I know these are two tracks that least belong to the album proper)—a sadness like wind, whose coldness & passage across your face are more important than whatever baggage (leaves/trash/snow) it happens to be dragging around the parking lot

Not A Good Cook (bernard snowy), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 14:17 (ten years ago) link

also: "Poor in Love" chiming gtr reminds me of some other song that I associate with New Year's—maybe a confused subconscious U2 association?

Saw Bejar solo last week -- totally good show, though actually a bit light on Kaputt tunes (I think just "downtown" and "chinatown").

tylerw, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 18:52 (ten years ago) link

listening to Five Spanish Songs via Spotify right now. i can see why we really haven't talked about it. it's fine and all but nothing as great as his other stuff.

From December 2013 interview:

"In 2014, I'm going to try and make a record! Hopefully I'll have something done by the end of the year."

So fingers crossed

eheh, thanks. that sounds like a plan !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 16:10 (ten years ago) link

i wouldn't expect it to sound like Kaputt though

nostormo, Thursday, 2 October 2014 22:29 (ten years ago) link

I'd be very happy with more ambient disco explorations and spoken word ruminations.
