Restore MTV's cred with these ideas....

In this thread we tried (futilely) to restore Michael Jackson to glory.
Now...what could we do to bring MTV back from the dead?

Here's my narrowminded ideas
* No more reality shows.
* Would playing some Video's be too much of a problem? Require/Insist/Demand that they have a playlist of NO LESS than 200 videos in rotation and any one time, so that we don't see the same one enough to get bored with it.
* Bring back 120 Minutes and find a modern day equivalent to Dave Kendell to host it.
* If VH1's "Legends"/"Behind the Music" -like programs are going to obsess on every 60's-70s burnout no matter how marginal, then MTV should debut their own "Legends"/"Behind the Music"-like program and cover the 80s. Especially obscure stuff.
* Have the dessicated corpse of Andy Warhol host a show.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Monday, 28 October 2002 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

- Get rid of the WWF shit.
- Get rid of TRL
- Have Carson Daily slain and televise it.
- Bring back "120 Minutes" and "Headbanger's Ball"
- Kill everyone.

They do play videos! Why, every time I flip over to MTV they're playing "Dilemma"!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 28 October 2002 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

They could do my ideas for a TV show as outlined in previous thread

comission more leftfield/altermative animation (i loved The Maxx, Downtown etc. - even tho it shouldnt really be in MTV's mandate they were very good at this)

axe Dismissed, Cribs and all that shit and PLAY MORE VIDEOS!

OR

just go as they're going by dividing everything up - i watched MTV 2 and MTV Dance on cable round a friend's recently and enjoyed them enough to the point where i would not need to watch MTV at all

blueski, Monday, 28 October 2002 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Since I got VH1 Classic, I've had no reason to complain about anything MTV is doing. VH1 Classic continually blows my mind -- I wish they'd lose their VJs and play more R&B/rap, but otherwise they've got some fucking GENIUSES in the programming department.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 28 October 2002 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

No more R&B/Rap. Ever.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 28 October 2002 20:06 (twenty-three years ago)

They have a VH1 Classic soul/R&B channel so that's prolly why you don't see any, er, R&B/rap. I just got digital cable too. I saw The Fall's "Victoria" on Saturday night! Radical.

Aaron W, Monday, 28 October 2002 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow! My cable provider doesn't carry this. :-(

I saw The Fall's "Victoria" on Saturday night! Radical.

I saw that too. I was amazed.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 28 October 2002 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

VH1 Classic and VH1 Soul are both fantastic. THe various flavors of MTV are great, too.

I would completely remove videos from MTV and make it all reality television with a heavy emphasis on The Real World and Road Rules (RIP Michelle).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 October 2002 20:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Call your local cable provider, Jody, and demand... heh. "Victori-uh!" Mark E. Smith in an Adrmiral Nelson (?) outfit was worth my cable bill alone.

Aaron W, Monday, 28 October 2002 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Weird, I saw Victoria too!

I would love it if VH1classics would have a dedicated hour of super obscure bad new wave videos. The worst one I ever saw was "Einstein A-Go-Go" by Landscape. I don't mean classic new wave videos, I mean horrible, worst of the worst music videos.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Monday, 28 October 2002 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Custos just described M2 and Alex just described the Jim-Crow MTV from before Thriller.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 28 October 2002 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes!

- Have Carson Daily slain and televise it.
YESSSSS!!

- Bring back "120 Minutes" and "Headbanger's Ball"
YYYYYOOOEEEESSSSSSHHHHH!!! And also "Amp", "Yo! MTV Raps!", "Classic MTV" and "International MTV"

- Kill everyone.
Sacrifice them on the pyre of Carson Daly's burning corpse.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Monday, 28 October 2002 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean, you guys do realize that 120 Minutes is still running, don't you? (It's just, like: Doves, Flaming Lips, Super Furry Animals, White Stripes, etc.)

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 28 October 2002 20:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Yesss...and a little after "Victoria" they played "See Those Eyes" by Altered Images, which made me incredibly happy.

Ernest P., Monday, 28 October 2002 20:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Custos just described M2...
"I want my MTV2"

...and Alex just described the Jim-Crow MTV from before Thriller.
I have no beef against an MTV that plays rap or R&B, I just wish they would show more of everything...while showing us less TRLJackass(Notso)RealworldRoadRulesUndressed drivel.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Monday, 28 October 2002 20:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean, you guys do realize that 120 Minutes is still running, don't you? (It's just, like: Doves, Flaming Lips, Super Furry Animals, White Stripes, etc.)
No, I didn't know that. But if Uncle Fester is still the host, I'm not that interested.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Monday, 28 October 2002 20:40 (twenty-three years ago)

No, Custos, it's just some generic new guy (in the Gideon Yago mode). He keeps the flame of vintage 120 alive with his very poor interview skills, bringing back fond memories of:

LEWIS LARGENT: You guys are really great, how come?
MUMBLY INDIE BAND: I don't know, you know, it's just, like, we did that stuff, and I guess it was cool.
LEWIS LARGENT: That's so cool.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 28 October 2002 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I just went thru the trouble of checking on MTV's site and it looks like 120 Minutes isn't on anymore.

I remember several years back some yob who was hosting 120 Minutes (it wasn't Largent, Pinhead, or anyone else I've ever seen before or since) interviewed Ian Brown around the time that Unfinished Monkey Business came out. It was the most embarressing thing I've ever witnessed because the guy was TOTALLY unprepared.

Interviewer: So, uh, is this anything like the Stone Roses?
Brownie: (Incomprensible yet curt Manc speak about 21st Century music amounting to "no").
Interviewer: (realizing that all his questions are about the Stone Roses) uhhhhhh... ermm...

It was the worst interview I've ever seen! :0

Aaron W, Monday, 28 October 2002 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

My bad, it was when Golden Greats came out, for those of you keeping track at home.

Aaron W, Monday, 28 October 2002 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know what MTV's site says, Aaron, but I've seen 120 Minutes on M2 as recently as last week.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 28 October 2002 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh M2... that changes everything. I believe ya.

Aaron W, Monday, 28 October 2002 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

What do you mean, "restore MTV's cred?" I didn't know they had any!

I saw Carson Daly in a bar this summer, but I was too drunk to properly insult him. Let that be a lesson to you (and to me).

hstencil, Monday, 28 October 2002 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Behind the Music has been doing 80s hair bands recently (Motley Crue, Poison); I would so love if they also started doing 80s and 90s college and "alternative" rock.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 28 October 2002 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Think we'll ever finally see the BEHIND THE MUSIC on Van Halen?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 28 October 2002 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

What do you mean, "restore MTV's cred?" I didn't know they had any!
Back in the mid 80s (after Bob Pittman left but before Viacom swallowed them whole) they did have some cool stuff on. "120 Minutes"/"Postmodern MTV" being my personal fave; "Classic MTV" and "International MTV" coming up second and "Yo! MTV Raps!" and "Headbangers Ball" being refreshing changes of pace. The first thing that vanished after the Viacom buyout was all the above. (Well, "120 Minutes" limped on for a while, but without Tim Sommer or Dave Kendall, I didn't see any point in it anymore.)

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Monday, 28 October 2002 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Behind the Music has been doing 80s hair bands recently (Motley Crue, Poison); I would so love if they also started doing 80s and 90s college and "alternative" rock.
I agree. "My Bloody Valentine....Behind the Music."
"The Pixies were a Legend...this is their story..."

Think we'll ever finally see the BEHIND THE MUSIC on Van Halen?
I think they already did one. They also did a special on the David Lee Roth/Sammy Hagar tour and the sordid history leading up to it.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Monday, 28 October 2002 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember a couple years ago the producer of Behind the Music was talking about how he'd like to do one on New Order or The Cure but no one would find them interesting. Bastards.

Aaron W, Monday, 28 October 2002 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm waiting on Behind the Musics of Chequered Past, the Power Station, Damn Yankees and Bad English.

I would so love if they also started doing 80s and 90s college and
"alternative" rock.

BTM on MBV! (Hey, that bastard Custos beat me to the punch.) Thing is, Kevin Shields could easily fill up the hour just talking; he's a motormouth.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 October 2002 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

He should stop talking and start makin' records, the lazy fucknugget.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Monday, 28 October 2002 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

MTV NEEDS NAKED PICTURES OF AARON CARTER!!! CAN YOU SEND ME SOME CARSON?!?!?!?

R (ystrickler), Monday, 28 October 2002 21:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I came very close to becoming one of the writers for Carson Daly's radio show. In the end Carson decided that I didn't, "Write in my voice." A blessing, I suppose. His favorite thing that I wrote was an intro for 112's "Peaches and Cream." The line went like this:

"Some politicians are so concerned by the song's sexy lyrics that they're considering slapping parental advisory stickers on cartons of ice cream."

I was trying to write things that Carson would say that 14 year olds might find entertaining. As his producer kept telling me, "Carson's all about the music, maaaaaaaaaan. Write about the music." It was ridiculous. I think what did me in (after writing several sample scripts for them which were all used on air without pay or credit, natch) was the ending line I put on every script (I thought it should be Carson's trademark): "See you guys tomorrow. After all, my last name isn't Daly for nothing." The producer kept telling me that Carson wouldn't say that, but I included it in every one I wrote for him. This, apparently, pissed Carson off.

Yancey (ystrickler), Monday, 28 October 2002 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Yancey......you rock!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 28 October 2002 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

YANCEY YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT'S LIKE TO LIVE EVERY DAY OF YOUR LIFE WITH A JOKEY NAME PEOPLE CAN PLAY WITH YOU FUCKER AAAAAGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!

Clarke (GET IT, HA HA, LIKE SUPERMAN!) B., Monday, 28 October 2002 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

They need to just let Iann Robinson do whatever the hell he wants 24/7.

Kris (aqueduct), Monday, 28 October 2002 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

You don't think my name gets played with??? Yancey Pants is what many of my close fem-friends call me. And in high school it was either Nancy or Faggot, which, admittedly, isn't a play on my name. PUSH

Yancey (ystrickler), Monday, 28 October 2002 22:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Kris' comment sez it all. The Metal Sludge interview with Mr. Robinson is pure entertainment.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 October 2002 22:41 (twenty-three years ago)

And FWIW, I got 'faggot' quite a bit in school thanks to the spelling and pronunciation of my last name. Happily one of the chief abusers is dead of drugs and stupidity, and I metaphorically dance on his grave. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 October 2002 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

That is the most ominous ";-)" ever.

wl (wl), Monday, 28 October 2002 23:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Just wondering, does anyone know who did the song "once in a lifetime"... the video is sometimes played on vh1 i think, it goes "and you may find yourself" (i think), done with a funny man in a suit with a sort of trail after he moves. Me and my friend have been killing ourselves tryin to remember...

brassy, Monday, 28 October 2002 23:12 (twenty-three years ago)

TALKING HEADS!!!!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 October 2002 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

"A SORT OF TRAIL AFTER HE MOVES" !!!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 28 October 2002 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Great bands to be covered for the "other" Behind the Music (These are all great stories, God help me if they've been done, I wouldn't know, I don't watch Behind the Music but..I might if...) Minutemen, Minor Threat/Rites of Spring, Germs, TSOL, Replacements, X, Residents, Pere Ubu, the Tubes, Christian Death, TMBG, Dickies, Flamin' Groovies, Dead Kennedys, sheez these are all great rock tales and there are so many more out there. I can't believe that someone, probably an army of old and tired someones, thinks people wouldn't care to hear them. You don't even have to like the music to care about the people.

matt riedl (veal), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 00:33 (twenty-three years ago)

1. Hang Ian Robinson
2. Would a Ramones BTM really be that unreasonable?

Keep Carson
Keep some reality shows
Keep fancy editing
bring back 120 min and make it even better like 240 min or something
New Wave Cribs
more Andrew W.K.
more Jackass

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 05:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Completely remove Jackass and all Jackass like shows.

David Allen, Tuesday, 29 October 2002 05:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Would a Ramones BTM really be that unreasonable?

I think there was one, right around the time Joey died. I may have it on tape.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 05:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry for continuing to go on about this. But Jesus... I saw a video for Laid Back's "White Horse" last night on VH1 Classic. Who _does_ the programming for that station?

Aaron W, Tuesday, 29 October 2002 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

You don't even have to like the music to care about the people
No shot. I watched the Journey and the REO Speedwagon BTMs .. Like I give a fuck about either of them. So why can't Joe Average watch the riveting tale of the Germs?

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I hated how the Iggy one had all that shit about his son. You could tell it was the producer's "angle" to make it appealing to Mr. Joe Average. OTM that the thing that's cool about the show is the stories themselves instead of neccesarily the music.

Aaron W, Tuesday, 29 October 2002 13:43 (twenty-three years ago)

bring back 120 min and make it even better like 240 min or something
I see your 240 Minutes, and I'll raise you 300 Minutes and a half hour episode of "Postmodern MTV" every wedensday night.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

PEOPLE: "Bring back 120 Minutes"
ME: "It still exists"
PEOPLE: "Bring back 120 Minutes"
ME: "For Christ's sake it still exists"
PEOPLE: "Bring back 120 Minutes"
ME: "For fuck's sake, what did I just say?"

This discussion can't continue without the recognition that M2 is now the music channel, and MTV is the MTV-programming channel. Just stop posting, call your cable company, and ask for it. I get it all night and I don't even have cable.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Bring back Beavis and Butthead.

Bring back Daria you bastards!!

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 01:44 (twenty-three years ago)

* Bring back 120 Minutes and find a modern day equivalent to Dave Kendell to host it.

In the first episode we'll bring in John Lydon for an interview. When he tries to take off the hosts toupee,he gets his arm broken.

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 01:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Nitsuh, bring back 120 Minutes? PLEASE?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 03:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay...when is 120 Minutes on, then?

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i dont know if this is a US messageboard (and therefore your mtv would be a little bit different to mine) but there's this cool guy called zane lowe who i think should be on all the time

he just, like, sits on his sofa and chats awkwardly with his producer(who he seems to be friends with) until they come up weith something to talk about and he has a bit of a rant. its the best!

alistair, Friday, 8 November 2002 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

STOP OVERLAYING SO MUCH GRAPHICS OVER THE VIDEOS

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 8 November 2002 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

brg30: Daria reruns are being shown daily on a cable channel called "The N", which I think is like Nickelodeon for tweeners.

Lord Custos Omega: Here on the American west coast, 120 Minutes is on MTV2 every Sunday at 10 pm.

(Digression: A while back I had an idea to do a blog about 120 Minutes, kind of in the style of Television Without Pity except in more of a blog format, but it proved too time-consuming to write about all 30 videos a week on my own. If anyone watches 120 Minutes regularly and is interested in trying to do a group blog, email me.)

Everyone else: You're all missing the point. MTV is perfect the way it is. It neither needs nor wants "cred". It's making tons of money and, believe it or not, non-music shows like Jackass and Taildaters and Fear and Undressed get mad ratings. It's doing just fine without us weirdos who actually like music.

Nick Mirov (nick), Saturday, 9 November 2002 00:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I Want my MTV2 - The Real Music Television

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Saturday, 9 November 2002 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah ya don't - you want MTV2 from four or five years ago, now it's just Linkin Park and Puddle of Mudd videos and 120 Minutes last week was a David Gray extravaganza (although a lot of the Coldplay slant of 120 Minutes now is due to the fact that most American indie acts don't bother to make videos anymore). The N is actually Noggin at Night, Noggin being sort of the TVLand of Children's Television Workshop productions.
