This is the frustration thread. And I admit, I've NEVER heard:

Tortoise-Millions Now Living...
Can-Ege Bam Yasi...
Boogie Down Productions-Criminal Minded
No New York
Most of Wire's back catalogue (despite what I HAVE heard being amazing)
The Monks-Black Monk Time
Husker Du-Zen Arcade (!!!!!!)
Any Cocteau twins stuff before the mid-90s (the good stuff, basically-I imagine)
Michael Jackson-Off The Wall (never all the way through)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 16 January 2003 13:12 (twenty-three years ago)

pet sounds, buffy musical

zebedee, Thursday, 16 January 2003 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I love how Buffy The Musical is already part of the canon! Is this the quickest new release-to-canonisation ever?

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 16 January 2003 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

there's billions i haven't heard. all the above for starters, except 'off the wall' and a little bit of wire. i'd like to get some tortoise and husker du. i'm still young, there's plenty of time (although i do see a few people younger than me on ILM with great record collections). I only work part-time, so I can't afford to buy too many. I'm able to indulge myself a bit more in the summer when i work full-time...

i'm waffling! back to the issue in hand!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 16 January 2003 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not the answer kilian, tho I'm young too. See

Having no money whatsoever--c/d?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 16 January 2003 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm racking my brains. I can't come up with anything in the canon that I want to hear, they are often a disappointment IMHO.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 16 January 2003 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Argh, see My Big List, basically. What constitutes the canon anyway? In these po-mo times, don't we each have our own canons? Currently gasping after The Specials and Wire and Mu-Ziq and Autchre and and and and and and and...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 16 January 2003 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Nurse With Wound : Chance meeting ...

phil jones (interstar), Thursday, 16 January 2003 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

i think there's some v broad definitions of the canon here.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 16 January 2003 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

MAGGOT BRAIN by Funkadelic. The Parliament stuff I'm quite familiar with, but I've never really gotten a copy of this album and sat down and listened to it (beyond hearing snippets of it at friends' places, etc.)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 16 January 2003 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I love how Buffy The Musical is already part of the canon! Is this the quickest new release-to-canonisation ever?

Would someone who didn't know the show or the story behind each character enjoy that album?

(Personally, I'm a huge fan and when that episode aired my jaw was dropped from start to finish. Massively brilliant.)

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd say so. Joss Whedon'a sleevenotes include a "story-so-far" bit, so even if you'd never watched the series it wouldn't be hard to work out the plot. Full lyrics as well.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Anything by Love, ppl I respect always speak very highly of them, but they have not yet found their way onto my "priority list" of things to buy.
Maybe now that it's quiet out there I'll find some.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Anything by Bob Mould, Parliament/Funkadelic, Wire, Can, Neu! and Black Sabbath, probably.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

That goddam Main Source album which I can't find anywhere. I've downloaded most of it and heard the main tracks on endless mixtapes but have never been able to find the actual long player.

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I love how Buffy The Musical is already part of the canon!

Another reason why the canon is going DOWN.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

HERESY! Raggett! My office! First thing Monday morning! ;-)

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I knew free speech was under assault! Look at this violation of personal liberties! *runs away*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Neu! -- Clifford Brown -- Dale Watson -- Utopia

and the those that i don't think i'll like:
Slint. Beach Boys. Rolling Stones.

christoff (christoff), Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Larry Polansky, Four-Voice Canons (Cold Blue Music CD, 2002)

(In defense of stupid pun: It's true, I haven't heard it but am sure I would love it...)

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

shiteloads of Kraut Rock
Fairport Convention
Sandy Denny
West Coast Experimental Pop Art Band

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 16 January 2003 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

At least some albums by Beach Boys, Alice Cooper, ones I haven't heard by Deep Purple and AC/DC. I've actually never heard a whole Cheap Trick album. The rest of the Blue Oyster Cult's and Aerosmith's 70s albums. Probably half of the Queen albums. Probably all Coltrane, probably most 70s Miles Davis now actually. The rest of Ornette Coleman. The Carpenters for sure. The rest of Ravi Shankar, MS Subbalakshmi, Lalgudi Jayraman, Dr N Ramani. Probably the rest of Bach and a bunch of Mozart. Anything I haven't heard by Sor and Albeniz, I'm sure. The rest of Berio.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 16 January 2003 23:12 (twenty-three years ago)

The New York Dolls, Bringing It All Back Home, Catch A Fire, Odessey & Oracle

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 17 January 2003 00:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Quite a few AC/DC records, esp. from the Bon Scott era. And does the Jungle Brothers' _Crazy Wisdom Masters_ count? I want to hear that one _so badly_.

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 17 January 2003 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Ditto on that Main Source album.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Friday, 17 January 2003 02:15 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah i want to hear crazy wisdom masters too...anyone have a copy?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 17 January 2003 02:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Oddly enough, I still haven't got around to listening to Gang Of Four.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Friday, 17 January 2003 02:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Wolk - the Bon Scott-era AC/DC stuff is some of the best rock ever, canon or no.

hstencil, Friday, 17 January 2003 04:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Van Der Graaf Generator, all of it. Somebody tell me what to get first.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 17 January 2003 05:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Nordicskillz - You are in for big let-down w/Zen Arcade. Sorry. Seriously: big, big, let-down.

Dan i., Friday, 17 January 2003 10:48 (twenty-three years ago)

i have never, to my knowledge, heard any killing joke.

are they part of a canon?

geeta (geeta), Friday, 17 January 2003 12:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Leftism.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 17 January 2003 12:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Never heard any Killing Joke neither, geeta but I am quite certain I would not love them. I would probably love Spiderland though.
Arthur, there was a Van der Graaf Generator thread here. I started it even though for me they belong into the "disappointed by a canonical band drawer".

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 17 January 2003 12:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard Spiderland, but I did not love it at all. In fact, it kinda sucked. I listened to it and wondered what the fuss was all about. And Slint is a dumb band name, too. (I'm just trying to bait future indignant googlers, now.)

I really do want to love Killing Joke, though.

geeta (geeta), Friday, 17 January 2003 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Nordicskillz-Do not listen to the idiot about Zen Arcade-it is truly a must have album.

Nordicskillz - You are in for big let-down w/Zen Arcade. Sorry. Seriously: big, big, let-down.

mal2478 (mal2478), Friday, 17 January 2003 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Uh-oh. I'm divided now. How do I second-guess the kidz?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 17 January 2003 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Eddie Palmieri Live at Sing Sing
Willie Colon w/ Hector Lavoe: El Malo
Celia Cruz y Willie Colon: Celia & Willie
Tipica '73: Salsa Encendida; The Two Sides Of Tipica '73
Cheo Feliciano: With a Little Help from My Friend [all songs written by C. Curet Alonso]
Billie Holiday: Live at Storyland

Lots of Oum Kalthoum, but I can't keep track of all those Arabic titles.

I have a feeling I am going to like the singer Imael Rivera a lot too.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 17 January 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Obviously making use of the Latin music canon here, not the Latin-music-that-the-Village-Voice-recongizes canon.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 17 January 2003 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm very interested in hearing Angel Canales, but I'm not sure if he qualifies as "canonical."

Read about him here (or don't).

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 17 January 2003 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Zen Arcade too. Don't listen to the hataz.
