Further evidence that we Americans are clueless. What does this image really have to do with the film it's designed to sell? I mean, I know the film didn't make an exactly siesmic impression here, but don't you think it deserves a bit more dignity than this image suggests?

Discuss.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

nothing. no. shan't.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I noticed that in the video shop the other day. I've already seen the movie (and I wouldn't have qualms with seeing it again), but the box image did seem a real turnoff.

hstencil, Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought the film was brilliant, which only further underscores the travesty of a cover its suffering under.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

ew!

also the MGM dvd logo on the top looks like a moustache

also having a tongue piercing at the tip of yr tongue looks dumb

geeta, Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm still trying to figure out what the girl in the bikini is doing on that.

hstencil, Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Once again (see The Young Ones: some music-related questions.) this BRITISH MADE film isn't actually available on DVD here until next week.....

Com to think of it, twice in one day is just too much to be a coincidence - Alex is clearly taking sadistic delight in rubbing our stupid Limey noses in it - BAH!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I really enjoyed this movie. The cover art makes me sad as does the little review on the front. I'm glad I saw the movie before I saw the cover.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Barf. Stupid MGM.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

haha i think this cover is better and deeper and more enjoyable than the film, which i found grindingly tedious

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

The only thing deep about that cover is the woman's cleavage.

hstencil, Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Who is that woman? The hooker in the back of the van?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

The films in 2 parts right - the post-punk bit and the ravey bit? This cover illustrates the ravey bit, and it's got a tongue stud because that presumably means "raver" for the US market. Not a problem. The MGM logo does however look like a moustache.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

a picture of the real Tony Wilson having his nob massaged by several fawning mediawhores wouldve made a more accurate cover

i enjoyed the film tho, definitely buying the uk dvd

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

The bikini girl looks a bit like Kate Hudson......who was not in the film.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

MGM = Metro Goldwyn Moustache.

I just saw this advertised in one of Future Shop's big weekly sales, so I may bop down and pick it up, even despite the cover. I missed it every time it played in the theatres.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

"MGM = Metro Goldwyn Moustache."

The joke that made my morning. Cheers, Sean.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

why is there a tongue hanging out ?
was that stud in the tongue meant to be a pill
at first do we think ? thus tying in with the
'sex, drugs...' comment on the box ?

by the point ian c hangs himself,
and if u had no idea of the plot, you'd
be somehwhat confused by the box
wouldn't you ?

why couldn't they put some of the rave reviews on the cover ?

piscesboy, Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought the stud was going to be a pill, too! But that's probably down to equally annoying Irvine Welsh covers.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

"I barfed and barfed and so did Dr. Vick" would be a classic quote for the cover.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Just those words alone would be better than the cover.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Guy has a pretty nice set of teeth, eh? Is that Matt Damon?

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

In this movie, Wilson at one point says something to the extent of "People who play jazz are always having more fun than the people listening to it." Where is this from? Was it made up from the movie, a real Wilson quote, or was he quoting somebody else?

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

The original artwork for the film was fantastic - why change it? This looks like some hideous 80s Bret Easton Ellis nightmare. Unspeakably horrible. MGM should sack their designer, I reckon.

Stevem...quite right.... any specific mediawhores?

russ t, Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Did people have tounge piercings in madchester times? Don't think so. My guess is that it was originally a pill on the tongue, the suits got nervous and aked them to airbrush over it with a piercing

Robin Goad (rgoad), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm actually pretty bitter that the U.K. gets a two-disc set with tons of extras while we get one disc with crappy artwork. That and the unavialability of "I'm Alan Partidge" in Region 1 format makes me lean towards getting a multi-region player.

TMFTML

TMFTML (TMFTML), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

This is why I've ordered such a player myself -- and thank you for the news of this special edition, I will order that instead. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

You may find yourself regretting that decision when you find out how much more we're expected to pay for DVD's over here Ned.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

(amazon.co.uk claims the second DVD is poo poo too, boo boo)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

wow. that's... just... incomprehensible. I really enjoyed the movie and am looking forward to seeing it again, but what was wrong w/ the original primary-color-silhouettes artwork? That was perfect!

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

"(amazon.co.uk claims the second DVD is poo poo too, boo boo)"

http://www.playserver5.com/play247.asp is stocking both versions and from their description is does seem that there are more extras on the UK version, whether they're on 2 discs or not.

Hah! One up to us Limeys I think, Mr. In NYC!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I wasn't talking about the extras, just the cover art.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000063W1O.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

This one seems a bit more dignified but it ain't really anything special either.

Credence to pill theory: who in the world gets a tongue stud that far down his/her tongue?

Problem with Fischerspooner art: face looks like poppy-seed muffin or plague.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

It has to be said that "sex, drugs and rock n'roll" is a lot more accurate (if predictable) description than "Trainspotting meets the Fast Show". And that was from "Uncut"?

Tag, Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

"Credence to pill theory: who in the world gets a tongue stud that far down his/her tongue?"

Yeah, but look at it....it's cleary meant to be a piercing! It's gleaming!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

The stud is that far down because of the space taken up by the wording (stud: an afterthought "the tongue... needs something")

That girl: is it Cath Carroll??

DavidM (DavidM), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe the words prat, tosser and wanker don't translate well in the US.

Daniel (dancity), Thursday, 23 January 2003 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

My neighbor works for MGM DVD productions in the USA (he does work on the menus etc) and I brought this travesty up with him a few weeks ago. He said he would mention it to the dept head. I'll ask him if there's any word yet.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 23 January 2003 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sure they just made a cover that would be appealing to young ravers. If you're hip enough to already know you want to see the film, then you're not looking to the cover as a reason to/not-to buy it. If you're looking for "something like 'Go' " then this might be it - ya know, because the guy has a stud in his tongue - pure attitude that speaks to our generation.

So, travesty (not?) withstanding: marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce, marketing, commerce...

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 23 January 2003 20:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Makes me glad I got my copy from Netflix.

Dave Beckhouse (Dave Beckhouse), Friday, 24 January 2003 00:24 (twenty-three years ago)

actually tho it reminded me at first of nowt more
than the ad for those square boiled sweets 4 yrs back (ranchers ?)
that had almost the exact picture as the dvd on their
posters in an allusory way pillwisely.

piscesboy, Friday, 24 January 2003 00:37 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a bit like the original VHS cover art for Penelope Spheeris' "Suburbia", which featured a stylized depiction of "punks" that owed more to "Liquid Sky" (the film) than to any early 80's hardcore kids that starred in the film.
In fact, here it is:

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/6302033950.01._PE_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 January 2003 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

the bikini girl really looks photoshopped in.

Honda (Honda), Friday, 24 January 2003 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

probably that writing wasn't really on the tongue also

mark s (mark s), Friday, 24 January 2003 01:02 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah.. that was a kinda banal thing of me to say especially in this post pen&pixel universe. also from staring at this cover too long i've sort of forgotten what the film was like now.

Honda (Honda), Friday, 24 January 2003 02:13 (twenty-three years ago)

any chance someone could make a full-size high resolution .JPG of the U.K. edition cover art so the rest of us could replace this travesty on our copies?

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Friday, 24 January 2003 02:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I suspect that this site will probably have replacement DVD cover art soon.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Friday, 24 January 2003 03:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone have a full-resolution copy of this design: http://www.chrisbarrus.com/weblog/myimages/24hr-usalbum.jpg

I'd rather use this one and roll my own cover.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Friday, 24 January 2003 03:29 (twenty-three years ago)

That's much more like it! I cannot fathom why MGM didn't think it would suffice. Idiots.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 January 2003 05:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably because MGM is more concerned about going bankrupt right now than anything else. Home video sales and farming out their now-huge back catalog of films and TV shows to cable is probably all that's keeping them going.

Remember when every movie studio had its own record label? Remember how Mike Curb ran MGM's into the fucking earth? Did anything good outside of soundtracks and Barry White records *ever* come out on 20th Century Fox Records?

mosurock (mosurock), Friday, 24 January 2003 07:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Should have been 'marketed' like classic Factory product in the 80's. i.e put a picture of a statue on the cover, but no title. Then don't tell anyone it's out for six months or so. Then get around to sending review copies out creating some demand. Then make sure that none of the shops can get it.

And put Crispy Ambulance on it.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 24 January 2003 08:20 (twenty-three years ago)

You forgot to mention covering it in sandpaper so it destroys everything it comes into contact with, Dr. C!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 24 January 2003 09:41 (twenty-three years ago)

The sound you are now hearing is that of five ILXers larfing nonstop.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 24 January 2003 09:45 (twenty-three years ago)

It was five ILXers who designed that cover?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 24 January 2003 10:04 (twenty-three years ago)

"And put Crispy Ambulance on it."

Not John Dowie?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 24 January 2003 11:22 (twenty-three years ago)

it's a vile Phhotoshop poorly constructed montage that looks like an advert for 'Ibiza Uncovered'. Piss poor. Can you imagine what Wilson thinks of it? Call him what you like, but ALL the Factory stuff was exquisitely packaged.

russ t, Friday, 24 January 2003 11:57 (twenty-three years ago)

No, not John Dowie!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 24 January 2003 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaah c'mon Dr. C - surey you're not denying that Hitlers Liver was one of the greatest things to ever be released on Factory?

Or how about Idiot?
"I'm the kind of idiot who always ends a sentence with a question
Aren't I?"

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 24 January 2003 13:12 (twenty-three years ago)

That is crappier than anything which has been crap before.

god, Saturday, 25 January 2003 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Further evidence that we Americans are clueless

Is it possible to avoid ascribing anything done by an American to all Americans? Federal, immigrant, polyglot, etc?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 25 January 2003 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

haha if it pisses wilson off then mission accomplished as far as i am concerned: the film is a total get-out-of-jail-free card for TW anyway

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 25 January 2003 17:28 (twenty-three years ago)

But does he pass Go? Or win 50 pounds in a beauty contest courtesy of the community chest.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 25 January 2003 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

they should put shania wearing a joy division shirt on the cover

geeta, Saturday, 25 January 2003 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

probably that writing wasn't really on the tongue also

This and geeta's last comment were the funniest things I've read all day, even funnier than the Axis of Weasel headline on the cover of the Post or whatever it is.

Anyway, what happened to the art I seen in all the magazines advertising this film, with the guys all like kind of hobbling about and the letters spelling "24 HR PARTY PEOPLE" in like ransom note cutting style?

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 26 January 2003 09:14 (twenty-three years ago)

can anyone please post a current picture of tony wilson? i'm curious.
and is there a thread about the movie in ILM or ILE? i just got to see it this weekend. i loved it, btw.

joan vich (joan vich), Monday, 27 January 2003 08:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Got my copy in Hanoi for 28000 dong = about $2. And I don't think it's even out at the cinemas here yet, yay! My cover is different from the others here.

There was of course way too much Wilson in the film, though he's pretty damn funny. Don't know about "get-out-of-jail-free card" - I mean, it makes him look like a tosser (albeit a funny clever one who did heroic deeds)

Keith McD (Keith McD), Monday, 27 January 2003 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

i think you just proved my point keith!!

mark s (mark s), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

tony now.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/1560000/images/_1564437_wilson150.jpg with the glasses he looks like jerry springer.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Got my copy in Hanoi for 28000 dong

*checks watch* Dan's a minute late already!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 January 2003 16:11 (twenty-three years ago)

they should have put a shirtless vini on the cover. that would "move units"

david day (winslow), Monday, 27 January 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)
