Maybe I do this wrong in my Limey lame way, but I can't believe that there are no threads.
These were IMHO the best young, very young,EMO band ever...
They split into such awful bands too. I mean fucking Slint.........?

panico (panico), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:16 (twenty-three years ago)

massively overrated.

can you imagine if all musicians decided to reissue the demos they made in high school?

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:21 (twenty-three years ago)

why else should we save them, j?

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

ebay, dude

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I have the self-titled EP and I like it. I miss the ragged sound of old school indie rock (maybe that's why I like Desaparecidos so much). Peter Searcy's solo album was SCARY.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, they're pretty damn overrated. I can't believe Grubbs had the gall to rerelease the stuff as part of that reissue series he did.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:25 (twenty-three years ago)

dude my high school demos r0x0r

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I was there the day Homestead handed 'em over to him.

hstencil, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:43 (twenty-three years ago)

massively overrated.

cuz like so many people talk about Squirrel Bait all of the time. It's always Squirrel Bait this and Squirrel Bait that. I'm tired of every band being compared to Squirrel Bait. ;)

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Considering how often they're "cited" (and "rated," be it "over-" or not), I'm glad those records were made available for interested parties to hear. They're not really my thing, but they seem like a good example of what they are. (And if no one else wanted to put 'em out, I don't think it's terribly beat of Grubbs to do it himself.)

Sam Jeffries (samjeff), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 01:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Request for information - who's a much better example of "that kind of thing"? If I sorta think Squirrel Bait is okay, what should I *really* hear from that era/"scene"? What's the real deal with Bill McNeal?

Sam Jeffries (samjeff), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Every band should be compared to Maurice.

hstencil, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 01:13 (twenty-three years ago)

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOh touched a nerve????????
SB still sound pretty to my ears. Point me in the 'right' dierction ,please. Seriously.
Still very much rate Sun God/Kick the cat et al 15/20 years on.......probably cos they were part of the soundtrack to my pathetic youth. Just like Durst/ oberst is to the kids today?

panico (panico), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 01:14 (twenty-three years ago)

a youth soundtracked by Oberst couldn't help but be pathetic

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 01:19 (twenty-three years ago)

the "right" direction would surely be mission of burma

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 01:21 (twenty-three years ago)

"Sun God" invented grunge so you can hate them for that. When I first heard Nirvana I immediately thought of S.B. But yeah, they were a high school thing for me and if I put them on it's pure nostalgia time. I think I only bought the e.p. when it came out cuz Bob Mould hyped them. Never did buy any soul asylum records though, so my indie cred is still impeccable.

Scott Seward, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 04:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I need to hear these guys.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 08:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate them with a passion cause I spent way too much importing one of their CDs thinking "hey everything on this Dexter's Cigar label is grebt so this has to be grebt too".

hamish (hamish), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 08:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I on the other hand bought both their albums on one CD for £2.50 from Cash Converters, so have no reason to dislike them on that front. As for the records themselves, they're probably the least interesting thing in that rock family tree for my money. A fairly standard take on what dozens of other bands were doing at that time. That's all.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 27 March 2003 11:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Skag Heaven was so much a part of my childhood that I can't believe that I ever sold it. And then I found it at Second Avenue in PDX for, like $5 or something! Woo! We used to call it "Personal Hardcore" back then. It was all about the guitar texture... oooohhhh...

kate, Thursday, 27 March 2003 11:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to really dig those two Squirrelbait albs when they were issued by Homestead UK division (85-6?)

First heard one of their tracks on the 'Wailing Ultimate' comp put out by Homestead - a recent re-listen to that made me think that v. little of it had truly stood the test of time (I retain a sentimental fondness for 'I'm Not Patsy' by Big Dipper), but I'm sure that wasn't really the point, which makes Dexter's Cigar CD reisssues seem a bit vain.

I still think Gastr Del Sol are one of the all-time great groups, tho', so gd old Grubbsy and the rest of 'em.

What are Bastro like?

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:46 (twenty-three years ago)

bastro are pretty great - fairly heavy, with john mcentire trying to drum like a metal drummer and grubbs doing his usual guitar hysterics.

Rejoice! She's back! :-) Heya BK.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 April 2003 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd write more but I am chaining AsiaKitty to the keyboard to write her "How I followed the Foo Fighters while my mom followed Chris Brokaw through California and thank heavens she's such a great mom that she didn't let her Chris Brokaw worship get in the way of my seeing Dave Grohl belch loudly on stage in Oakland while Chris Brokaw was simultaneously wow-ing the audience in SF (sans belching) although she was a source of embarrassment when she continued to wildly and exaggeratedly dance in the front row of the balcony in a section that was visible to Dave Grohl and secured off by yellow police/caution tape ("Oh, Honey, that tape doesn't mean we can't sit here. They'll let us know if it's not ok.") through the first 7 songs of the Foo Fighters set until the boys behind us begged her to sit down and then she complained to Chris Brokaw for the next two days about how much her neck hurt from her violent hair dance as she calls it and I can't wait to be old enough to go to concerts alone" Tour Diary.

Anyone know if those 2005 Drag City reissues are remastered?

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:11 (fifteen years ago)

From Drag City - "we remastered them from the original homestead tapes in '97. They went out of print then we reissued them in 2005. Same remastered version as '97"

"Hammering So Hard," "Sun God," and "Kid Dynamite" three of my favourite songs of their day. Still sound great, too.

I mentioned the three songs I love just above (13 years ago, geez); this turned up on my FB wall today, David Grubb posting about reissues. (I didn't know specific personnel till I saw this.)
