new ASMZ has been leaked so I thought it was time to see what ilxors thought of similar bands. Couldnt find anything on the search function, so apologies if theres already one.
Search:

ASMZ - I preferred "He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts of Light" to "Born into Trouble as the Sparks Fly Upward" but I wondered what others thought. Sometimes i prefer ASMZ to the parent band.
The new Silvert Mt Zion album has apparently been leaked. Heard the 1st track off the album and its quite different to the other albums. Supposedly the new album has vocals.

GYBE- Think the last album is poor but im sure theres plenty of threads on them already.

Do Make Say Think - Best one of the lot i'd say.

Exhaust - Loved the 2nd album enregistreur never heard the S-T album.
Fly Pan Am. 1st album is great. destroy the remix ep.

Destroy
1-speed bike. Awful album.
Re - Poor album too.
Frankie Sparo - Dull singer songwriter.

Not heard - Sofa
Sackville.

So a few classics and a few duds. Maybe deserves classic status simply because of the packaging the cds & vinyl come in?

DMST were great live when i saw them. great analogue tones, really warm sounding band. i'm not crazy about the brass but it's done somewhat tastefully.

the only godspeed record that i could tolerate was the EP.

alex - the first exhaust album is great, definitely search. as for 1-speed bike - i really didn't like his LP on constellation either, however i've been quite enjoying his recent stuff on broklyn beats. i've had the "i'm a pretzel on a stealth mission to kill the president" EP for a little while now and i find myself going back to it very often.

Never liked what i've heard of GYBE so I've no inclination to check out other bands on Constellation.

I really like ASMZ and am looking forward to the new one. The first Godspeed album and the EP rulz - beyond that, eh...

i have a recent-ish compilation of Constellation stuff and the only song i liked was the Sackville track. the rest was very ehh.

You should listen to Hanged Up, all of you.

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Loved the 1st GSYBE, never got into the 2nd, but I can forgive them anything after seeing them live a few years back at the Union Chapel.

Liked the 1st and 2nd DMST albums, never got the latest one, or the latest GSYBE simply because there were more pressing albums at the time.

I want to hear more about Broken Social Scene - You Forgot it in People, which I've heard some cracking stuff about and is apparently some members of DMST amongst others, but it doesn't seem to have a release date in the UK

Godspeed You Black Emperor offshoots - Search/Destroy
Kranky S&D
Godspeed Spinoffs
Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Classic or Dud?
Yanqui U.X.O. - C or D?
Your Favourite Record Label right now

And after lunch I'll go on about this some more if you want.
S1utsky is right about Hanged Up, the cover of Blue Monday alone makes me smile.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Hanged Up covered blue monday? which album?

Alix K, Tuesday, 29 July 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

On the first, self-titled album. It's called "New Blue Monday."

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll check it out. What do you think of Set Fire To Flames? Molasses?

Alix K, Tuesday, 29 July 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

has there been a more boring group of bands ever? oh wait, i forgot about the recently deceased elephant six collective.

Bosse-De-Nage (Bosse-De-Nage), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

It's hard to really say what I think about a lot of Mtl bands.

Exhaust - Loved the 2nd album enregistreur never heard the S-T album.

I keep forgetting to buy their new album. 1st album was wonderful and actually gave me hope for the side projects. Its a wonderful balance between the awful, awful One Speed Bike and the full blown GYBE.

Do Make Say Think - Best one of the lot i'd say.
Not a side project, but the only thing I could say to improve them is that they all have to wear leather pants like Cram. I wanna see them hell bent for leather! Their latest album is urgent and key if you like any of this stuff.

Not heard - Sofa

Its been awhile and I used to only listen to the 7" late late nights but I seem to recall it as being a rougher GYBE at the time, sorta like the some of the later stuff like Set Fire To Flames or the part with the trains from the first album. But it has been about 3 year since I last listened to it.

Set Fire To Flames? Molasses

Neither of these I enjoy but for some reason have promo copies of still. Molasses is nicely packaged.

Also sorta related but I think on Kosher Rock records outta Toronto is Lullabye Arkestra. Go check them out if they are in town. Its not going to blow your mind but they are fun bizaster in the making. Plus despite their hatred of leather pants, they are all super nice in their own little way.
