Why are good solid house cds so hard to find?

Over the last year I've come, by listening to a lot of it on the radio, to appreciate various types of house music. This is all well and good, but whenever I try and find CDs of this stuff I draw blanks. They're either four-on-the-floor club-style compilations (which are not interesting enough), or 'intelligent' armchair compilations (which are not dancey enough).

So to date I own three house CD's:

  • Blueprints volume 2 (Slip 'n' Slide Blue / Kickin Records)

  • Outpatients volume 3 (Hospital Records) (technically two-step/uk garage/whatever it's called)

  • Ian Pooley - Since Then

But I want more.

If you want some of that smooth West coast deep house, check out some of the Naked Music compilations, preferably the Nude Dimensions series.

Also, Guidance Records out of Chicago has released some nice stuff. Their "Midnight Express" compilations, "Mundial Muzique" (Latin and Afro tribal-ish house), and Hi Fidelity House compilations. All good.

Here are some crowd-pleasers:

Sound Signature Sounds or First Floor -Theo Parrish (both are really great, the latter is a comp of 12"s)

May Day Mix-Derrick May

Rest-Isolee

Actually, Playhouse has put out some great CDs (if you're looking for full-lengthers) like the new John Tejada/Adrian Leviste, the Famous When Dead comps, etc.

Natural Blaze-Blaze (I know the cheese factor is high, but I can't help but love this shit.)

Mahogany Brown-Moodymann

I rec. the Andy Weatherall "Hypercity" as well. Everyone I know loves it, even those that aren't all that into house.

You might want to check out Richie Hawtin, Dan Bell and the Kompakt label stuff. I tend to like minimal/tech as well as hard house as opposed to souldful jazzy stuff.

I started a thread on this looking for good continous mixes, check it out, it may be of some help --
