Bands that should drive off a cliff.

Briefly mentioned on Bands that should literally be dragged out into the street and shot : What bands do you suspect would do better by stopping recording together/separately NOW rather than release their next album?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

How about 'bands that should skid through a centre divider and roll over in a big crash'? Did wonders for Def Leppard!

dave q, Wednesday, 30 July 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

... and Fairport Convention

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, good one. In other words, bands the really just need to STOP NOW!.

(1) Kiss -- I know it's too late, and they really should've all been slain in some bizarre cataclysm sometime around, say, Dynasty, but really....with every new stunt they pull these days (Kiss Koffins, Kiss Symphony, etc.), they slip ever further from the tarnished gold ring of their dignity, to say nothing of their legacy.

(2) The Strokes -- Seriously, you know that their next record is going to suck all over the place in a decidedly dissapointing manner....it's already going the same way as Chinese Democracy. They should just quit now and be done with it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, if G'N'R never released whatever it is (I love the fact that they've been at it so long, the Offspring have already stolen the name), they'd probably do allright.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, this thread removes the potential for artists to surprise us yadda yadda, but come on, what bands do you get a slight twinge about when you hear of their new direction, or lack of?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Having not heard 'Strays' yet, this thread is denied a 100,000 word exegesis from me espousing any viewpoint whatever at this time

dave q, Wednesday, 30 July 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Duran Duran. They need to stop.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, to name a few:
U2
KISS (Despite admittedly being a fan, Alex in NYC is right)
Pearl Jam
DMB/Any number of DMB wannabes
Metallica (unless we can just teleport them back to Master of Puppets era quality)
Mudvayne
Aerosmith... please, Lord, give me this one
Biggie and TuPac, PLEASE
P. Diddy

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Justin Timberlake (Kay, so he isn't strictly a band. However, he just needs to stop. Period.

I second Metallica.

The Strokes. (Alex, you deserve a kiss for that one!)

The White Stripes. (They are interesting, but are they really worth all the hype?)

Limp Bizkit (Easy, I know. Still, how much frat-boy screaming am I expected to take?)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Red Hot Chilipeppers.. (goddammit.)

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw janes live on some late night show last week. they f'in suck. creed f'n sucks but most of all i think red hot chilli peppers should move on. it's to bad anthony and flea can't act (not to say they haven't tried). let me also add im sick of evan dando, chris cornell, and altho they rock and they are nice guys why in the hell
do the supersuckers still have a record contract?

kelly denison-cole (dustjacket), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like to nominate the Drive-by Truckers. Keep on truckn' guys, right over that fuckin' cliff

William R Henderson (Cabin Essence), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"they slip ever further from the tarnished gold ring of their dignity, to say nothing of their legacy"

There are only three words that end in "y" that mean anything to Gene Simmons: "Money, "Pussy", and "Kiss-tianity".

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

The Rolling Stones, to name an obvious choice. However, they haven't released a good album in 25 years, all that contrarian "Emotional Rescue is great" shit be damned.

ham on rye (ham on rye), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The fact that the Lord Almighty has yet to open the heavens and rip Creed apart atom by atom live on CNN as a testament of His Divine Love for us gives me serious reason to think He hates us all.

barnacleBill, Wednesday, 30 July 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like to nominate the Drive-by Truckers.

Seconded. In fact, the entire Athens country-rock scene. How many bands are there in Athens that are "country-influenced rock and roll"? There's country-influence metal and punk, too, that I'm aware of. Really annoying. Had a hell of a time finding a local band to play with down there.

Xii (Xii), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The Drive-By Truckers should drive off a cliff ONLY under these conditions:

1) They are in a '69 Charger
2) It is being driven by ca. '75 Burt Reynolds
3) They clear the cliff completely and land on the other side
4) The police car chasing them almost makes it, but lands grille-first into the opposite cliff face and then tumbles down into the ravine and explodes
5) Cut to a shot of an orangutang in the passenger seat making a wacky face

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Add in Jerry Reed on the soundtrack and I think it's a done deal.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Limp Bizkit (Easy, I know. Still, how much frat-boy screaming am I expected to take?)

-- Nichole Graham (britbab...), July 30th, 2003.

As a fraternity brother myself, just let me say, fuck you... No frat-boy I know likes Limp Bizkit and comparing him to a frat boy would is as oxymoronic as your email, as there are VERY few british women out there attracted enough to be called a babe

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Thursday, 31 July 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you just proved Nick's point, actually.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 31 July 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to object to the Truckers' deaths, as I actually know Earl the bass player (and, loosely, Pat Hood). I think Nate's scenario is more appropriate.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Thursday, 31 July 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

No frat-boy I know likes Limp Bizkit and comparing him to a frat boy...

Yeah, but almost every frat guy I know likes that Steely Dan guy.

Clarke B., Thursday, 31 July 2003 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

b-but 'Emotonal Rescue' is great

dave q, Thursday, 31 July 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Remember, this isn't purely "who sucks?", this is people who you reckon have _just_ reached the top of their curve. Kiss for example would have to turn around and squint to even see the top of their curve.

I'd actually agree with U2: I don't think they have another re-invention in them.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 31 July 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

quick--somebody come up with a colo(u)rful method that Bowie would construct for his own auto-related demise!

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 31 July 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

he could break his neck while trying to give himself head in the back of his extra-long-"look at me, im david fuggin bowie"-limo

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 31 July 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The Stones can damn well wait until after September to go off a cliff as this is the first time I've ever managed to get tickets to see them live and I'm not going to miss it. But yeah, they could stop releasing records now...

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 31 July 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i wonder if i'm attracted enough to be called a babe

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 31 July 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

quick--somebody come up with a colo(u)rful method that Bowie would construct for his own auto-related demise!

At about 94 MPH while going round and round the hotel garage

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 31 July 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Beastie Boys. They haven't done much in awhile, but I'm scared they'll be back, and I'll be forced to hear more gut-wrenching high-pitched rap that stresses the last word of every line. "Paul's Boutique" is somewhat redeeming however.

John Baer (John Baer), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

nine months pass...
Damn, almost a year later and I realize that Biggie and 2Pac are long dead, thus its a moot point. Maybe just drive a truck w/ all recordings of their songs off of it.

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Friday, 28 May 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I call double-moot: Biggie & Pac were long dead a year ago, too.

briania (briania), Friday, 28 May 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

distillers
strokes
metallica...if James insists on staying sober / actually *singing*
live
