Yeah, It's another one of these lits...

http://www.jaguaro.org/feature/archives/000007.html

...prepare to be incredulous and offended, Beastie Boys fans.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 26 January 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha I only own one album in the Top 30, and that's White Blood Cells.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 26 January 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

nail gun please!

it's not the list, it's the fucking GLIBNESS of the writing!

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 26 January 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey everyone. Nirvana sounded like The Pixies, except not as good!

Also: men and women possess certain differences in the way they act, and aeroplane food is not as good as food cooked in a five star restaurant.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 26 January 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The writing is terrible. I mean worse-than-Q terrible. The albums (shrug) there's not much there I own anyway.

x-post glib yes, it gives the impression that these people don't actually give much of a fuck about anything, really.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 26 January 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Christ, then you have to *pay* the knob just to find out what 100 records he advises you buy for your collection.

mzui, Monday, 26 January 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, the "FUK U LAMERZ, DARK SIDE OF THE MOON ROXX!!!!!!!" type comments after the article are quite amusing!!!!!!

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Monday, 26 January 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

God, I have owned like 22 of those.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 26 January 2004 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, it reads like 3/4 of the posts on ILM, really.

phil turnbull (philT), Monday, 26 January 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I think most of the regular posters here could knock up a better article in an afternoon.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 26 January 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

MY list!

SUEDE
PULP
OASIS
HAPPY MONDAYS
YEAH YEAH YEAHS
SKA

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 26 January 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I would read this but I'm sure Chunklet's already done this ... better.

dean! (deangulberry), Monday, 26 January 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

He also says "Now that I'm older and sure I'm heterosexual, my Morrissey albums don't get much play"....ah yes, now you're a real man!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 26 January 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

This is old news

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Monday, 26 January 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Custos, archivist-cum-killjoy.

Anyway, yeah, it's not HILARIOUS or even that insightful. Just bitchy. Like a polaroid picture.

Huck Hurts (Horace Mann), Monday, 26 January 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

(*grits teeth*)
"must....kill....alll....joyyy...."

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Monday, 26 January 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

(i appreciate your, uh, thoroughness and effeciency, though)

Huck Hurts (Horace Mann), Monday, 26 January 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Useful advice for anyone who needs to be told what to think, merely dismissable for the rest of us who have a brain (& ears!)

Scott, Monday, 26 January 2004 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got a good few of these, but what's surprised me is the number of things he says that I do agree with! I mean I consider myself to quite like "Daydream Nation", but in truth I don't think I've ever managed to listen to more than about 3 tracks at a time.

Keith Watson (kmw), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Pathetic list.

People who make "negative" lists are pathetic. Good music writers write about the music they like and ignore the music they do not like.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

!!!!

Also, ILM posters should not worry about what other people might think about their favorite bands or genres such as indie rap

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 26 January 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

(now all we need is for Alex in NYC to come in and admonish people for fixating on certain bands)

(said in jest w/lurve)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 26 January 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have it in me tonight.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 26 January 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know who sucks more: The Strokes or Aesop Rock!

*runs and hides from Nate*

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

jody OTM. A good number of these albums ARE stuff I've either gotten rid of or debating getting rid of (half of the top ten actually!), but the writing never really gets near the reasons why.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Which of these have you gotten rid of, Antoine?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

albums on the list I've gotten rid of (some back in high school): What's The Story Morning Glory, Heaven Up Here, War, Ten Summoner's Tales.

albums on the list I might eventually get rid of: Combat Rock, Joshua Tree, Nevermind, Transformer, Hunky Dory, Midnite Vultures, Dig Your Own Hole, Soft Bulletin, Daydream Nation, Heaven Or Las Vegas, Dookie, Check Your Head, Ill Communication.

albums on the list I wouldn't DREAM of getting rid of: Tim, Transient Random-Noise Bursts, 13 Songs, Paul's Boutique, Zooropa, Hello Nasty, Emancipation, Being There, Morrissey (at least 3 of his recordings), Arthur, Whatever And Ever Amen, And Out Come The Wolves, You're Living All Over Me, Out Of Time, Zen Arcade, Violent Femmes.

Most of the others I couldn't be arsed to buy in the first place, so fuck 'em.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I Own 36 Of These Albums.
All Of The Beastie Boys Albums Are Great! what the fuck is this asshole talking about?.

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the list is usually correct, (except for Tim!), but totally lacking in insight.

It also often attacks the Conventional Wisdom worst albums of a given artist (Let it Be, Midnite Vultures, Apocalypse 91, Emancipation, tons of other examples) and pretends its somehow a controversial opinion.

Also, making fun of Helmet? and the Counting Crows? What is this, Alternative Press circa-95? Like, has anyone on earth mentioned Helmet in the last five years?

sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

What they say about Sublime, it's all true!!

aside from that--pah. Sure some of those albums suck, but really, Zooropa? Come on. "Stay" fer fuck's sake!

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

This guy is no Tanya Headon.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Like, has anyone on earth mentioned Helmet in the last five years?

apparently page hamilton is dating winona ryder! i heard this on E! last week.

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I bet she stole his heart HAHA OMG DATED TOPICAL JOKE ROTFL

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Most jazz created after the Big Band era is essentially musical masturbation (and like masturbation, if you must do it, you should do it in private!). It's self-indulgent noodling interesting only to the person playing it, a few fetishists, and lots of pseudo-intellectuals and wannabe hipsters who have to pretend to like it because it's "cool."

What more needs to be said, really?

Clarke B., Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

apparently page hamilton is dating winona ryder
dang I thought her whole thing was killing a guy's music career. This seems like necrophilia.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

" Your list sucks... You suck at life and I hope you burn in hell for the rest of time. Fuck off. "

brilliant!

i dunno why everyone's getting on their high-horse to be honest. i enjoyed the glibness. it's a fairly refreshing change from the normal over-wrought, pseudo-intellectual ramblings in praise / criticism of this-or-that. it's just opinions, not life or death.

search and delete, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

you suck at life?
what does that even mean?

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know but i'm copying and pasting it into an email to Outkast right now.....

searchanddelete, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a regional dialect of "you suck out life". jaguaro = VAMPIRES!!!omg

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

he must die b/c he dissed EATB, Beefheart, Bowie, and Zappa (hey, did Miccio write this list)? on the other hand, he also dissed Wilco, the Dead, Husker Du, and Built to Spill and that's cool.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

if Sigur Ros were also on the diss list, he'd be spared. but ALAS it's nailgun time.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Nailguns are being utilized far too frequently these days.

sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

This list just makes me believe that some people should have to put themselves through college.

LiquidTide (LiquidTide), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

an overrated Pixies tribute album that was blasted from every goddamn dorm room I skulked past in college (instead of the Pixies).

OH GOD, PLEASE MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!!!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Giant Steps!? Paul's Boutique?! Daydream Nation?!

Other than that....I don't really disagree for the most part! Ha, except of course I'm not going to be destroying any of my albums.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah and what he says under Giant Steps is the most ridiculous bullshit I've ever heard. Prize its glibness all you want, its flat out bullshit.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

he needs the person who writes pitchfork's news jokes to ghost write his material.

keith m (keithmcl), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Zappa's moral character is above reproach

WHAT the FUCK!?!?!?!?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

This list just makes me believe that some people should have to put themselves through college.

OTM

Aaron A., Tuesday, 27 January 2004 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe not great writing but pretty funny. laughs:

"Red Hot Chili Peppers- Give it away, give it away , give it away now.

The Presidents of the United States of America - Self-titled
Look, just because they're not selling anything with these jingles doesn't make them ARTISTS."

sucka (sucka), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 05:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"People who make "negative" lists are pathetic. Good music writers write about the music they like and ignore the music they do not like."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! This is the funniest thing on this thread (Geir's self-hatred always makes me laugh, sorry)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

On the other hand he does have a point, in that the perspiration/inspiration ratio of this feature seems to be about 100:1

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't that what Edison said was the correct ratio for genius? Are you saying this list is brilliant?

sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it is the ratio if you actually have any genius in you to start with. Read "inspiration" as "salient observation" and that clears it up

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a good list, I'd go with almost all of it, EXCEPT:

You NEED 'The Immaculate Collection'

Paul's Boutique: only the Dust Brothers' production lifts the album out of the trash heap. Well yes, same way that Douglas Sirk's mise-en-scene prevents 'Written on the Wind' from being sentimental tosh.

'Daydrem Nation' is fuckign terrible. If you disagree, you sorely need a monkey wrench to the ears.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

'Daydrem Nation' is fuckign terrible.

iAGREEE!!!!!!!11

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

'Daydrem Nation' is fuckign terrible. If you disagree, you sorely need a monkey wrench to the ears.

I'll send you my address and a monkey wrench. Bring it on, bitch.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah enrique we're just SORELY MISHEARING SHIT

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Fighting talk! Needless to say, I own a copy of 'Daydream Nation,' and, alas, of 'CODY'. If they'd gotten in a producer, that would have been super-nice.
I imagine Der Yoof would okay the notion of monkey-wrenching their fans' ears as a means of like taking apart the listening experience and going beyond the pleasure principle (see also, not bothering with writing any tunes, lyrics), so maybe I'm playing into their hands.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

God I hate the internet, any fuck who thinks they're funny can "PUBLISH" an article ful of useless fucked shit

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Shut up or I'll kill you

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

It's just a fucking [boring, pseudo-hip] album! Chill the fuck out.

God I hate music, any fuck who thinks they've got taste can "LISTEN" to an album full of useless fucked shit.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

daydream nation ROXXX fukk alyuo h@t@Z

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

'ROXXX' as in 'bores the pants off' surely. I LIKED track one, although it sounded a bit weedy. Otherwise an almightly MEH for Sonic Youth. Bloody trustas.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I like how they said Radiohead, Built to Spill AND Flaming Lips were all Neil Young rip offs. Que?

The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band
Nearly killing rock and roll in the name of 'psychedelia' by adding strings and excessive production. You pretentious Limeys, Sinatra had been doing the same thing for years!!

And I like how that doesnt even make sense.

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I think he's referring to the over the top production work that Nelson Riddle put on all the famous Sinatra rekkids.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

If I hear one more fucking person refer to Sonic Youth as "Yoof", "Der Yoof", "The Yoof" or any other fucking lameass name with the word "Yoof" in it I swear to God I'm gonna take an ax to my fucking computer. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

And Daydream Nation IS a complete piece of fucking dogshit. Everything they've ever done is!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Looking forward to reading your posts after you have axed the keyboard:

"Da Youf"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

oh der fuck!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

fwiw, his diss of we're only in it for the money was factually wrong in that it wasn't jazz-fusion ... zappa didn't do jazz-fusion till hot rats.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

sigh

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually thought this list was funny in a shallow sort of way, but maybe that's because I only own 21 of these albums (much to my amazment.) But maybe THAT'S because I've always been a little wary of albums which get a lot of hype, which is what this list seems mainly to be comprised of.

The problem I have with this list, though, is that more than anything it just illustrates the fact that you can find something negative to say about ANYTHING if you try hard enough. And what's the point of doing that?

And OF COURSE one of the 21 aforementioned albums is Daydream Nation.

Carrie Turner (cjt), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, damn it, it's high time someone stood up and told the truth about that Cat Stevens.

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band

Nearly killing rock and roll in the name of 'psychedelia' by adding strings and excessive production. You pretentious Limeys, Sinatra had been doing the same thing for years!!
Crikey!!!!! I didn't know Sinatra was pretentious and psychedelic!!!!!

I'll certainly be listening to that "doobie doobie do" line from "Strangers in the Night" in a different light now!!!!!!!

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I've only got one of these (Apocalypse '91) and as I hadn't listened to it in ages this article made me play it again to see if it holds up - it doesn't.

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

seven months pass...
I own/have owned roughly 40 of these.
I was gonna start a thread about this article but I figured it had been done before.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

It was already mentioned upthread the first time, but the sheer, stultifying stupidity if this statement...

Most jazz created after the Big Band era is essentially musical masturbation

... can't be underestimated.
