hey all you shangri-las fans... i'd love to know any personal insights you have into any of the songs, and lyrics blah blah... what you think they're about and how they make you feel... xx best dancin' track = sophisticated boom boom! also do any of you know if shadow morton had anything to do with the damned? i know he produced some stuff for the NY dolls (they also have the 'when i say i'm in love you best believe i'm in love L.U.V' at the beginning of one of their tracks.)and the damned have 'is she really going out with him' at the beginning of new rose, i think. (i'm trying to sing it in my head but there's loud music in the background and i can't quite get it!) anyway, thanks!

lorelei56, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, they fucking rock! best song, give him a great big kiss... all their songs are so great with that love/sex/death/teen angst thing goin on!

catkit, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

that's one of my faves too... there songs seem so affected yet unaffected at the same time! do you know what i mean?

lorelei56, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

For a thread not just consisting of one person talking to themselves, see here.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i think so, like there's an innocence there but also a precociousness (whoa! can't spell, sorry!)..., like they were about 16 or something when they started out, which is probably old enough to feel those feelings but too young to be able to voice them succinctly... or something?!!

catkit, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not one person talking to themselves, it's two people who just happen to be in the same room talking to each other! so there! just trying to get the conversation started since it doesn't seem that anyone wants to have a conversation that was started 2 years ago... is that ok with you????????? give us a break, we're new to this chatroom thing...

lorelei56, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Yo Girolamo and future Haters. This is a thread that I started to support someone whom I think is great. I AM A NEW FAN OF THE SHANRGI-LAS and I don't know them personally neither I'm I employed by any PR or promotional firm to do what I'm doin. If you or any other Hater don't like what's goin on hear just move on. Whether you believe what others have posted or not is not my problem but don't come here and try to spoil what's here because your a hater. THE SHANGRI-LAS is online therefore there are people from around the globe that have access to hear music so it's not a surprise that others who have heard their music is making postive posts about it. DON'T BE A HATER BE A CONGRADULATER.

shangri la fan (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

It's fine. It's not a chatroom though - it's not supposed to be real time. It might be hours or months before anyone replies.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex I seriously do not get this like at all a-l-l

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah but you made us feel stoopid, we dont understand the differnece between chatrooms and whatever, we just wanted to chat about the shangri-las with some people, we didn't realise nyou had some tracking device that would find out we were in the same room... that's alittle bit big brother don't you think??????
right on shangri-la fan!

catkit, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

It's from the ENFENETEE thread (i.e. the other thread which is probably just one people typing to themself. It also should be addressed to Nick not Girolamo) BTW I love the Shangri-Las.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"one people" = Alex needs more coffee.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

aha I get it now. thanks for the heads-up btw as the ENFENETEE thread is clearly the greatest novel since Finnegans Wake

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm abit confused about this whole thing! anyway, i'm gonna carry on chatting about the shangri-las coz i love them and that's what i came here to do...! i heard someone mention, though i can't remember where, the best of album that's got loads of radio adverts they did and stuff... does anyone know the name?

lorelei56, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha it is very Joycean isn't it?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Myrmidons of Melody

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

yes this whole thing is very joyce... except joyce actually made more sense... myrmidons of melody, thankyou..

lorelei56, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Lorelei you haf broken my BRANE

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread is great

don, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Don OTM

skeletor, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a good essay on "Past, Present & Future" that ILx archon Tom Ewing wrote a few years ago. (The link's from archive.org, so the page might load slow.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

you should be happy you got a brain to break... i'm still confused. how do you know we're in the same room? IT'S SCARY PEOPLE KNOW THIS MUCH ABOUT WHERE YOU ARE. dontcha think?

lorelei56, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Has Tom really taken that down from FT proper. What a shame.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

As been said before, this isn't a chat room -- it's a thread on a message board.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

what does don OTM mean? is it some computer thing that i wouldn't know about? anyway, the shangri-las, gonna read that essay now...

lorelei56, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Has Tom really taken that down from FT proper.

I don't it was taken down so much as Tom never bothered to put it back up after the forced move from freakytrigger.com to freakytrigger.co.uk.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

OTM = "on the mark" = "you're totally correct."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

WHAT'S GOING ON! my god, this is worse than when i studied IT at school...

catkit, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm....I would have thought the curriculum would have focued less on IT and more on King's early works like Carrie or The Shining or maybe even The Bachman Books.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

We can tell you're in the same room via the images from the IM satellite, of course -- hey, nice shirt.

"Out In The Streets" is an unsung classic (well, besides the Shangri-Las singing it, that is).

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, i think i get it now... hey that ENFENETEE thing is great! better than this one!

catkit, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm, using a lot of words i don't understand again! thanks, i got my shirt at H&M... nice trousers..
out in the streets, brilliant song...

catkit, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! I'm not wearing any trousers!

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha! i'm not wearing any shirt!

catkit, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Very apt, because the Shangri-las were reportedly by far the most outrageous, obscene and foul-mouthed of all the original girl-group girls.

Dock Miles (Dock Miles), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

MY OPINION ON THE SHANGRI-LAS IS THAT THEY ARE GREAT

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

were they really foul mouthed and obscene? in what way?

lorelei56, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

in a good-bad but not evil way duh

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

haha! what do you think makes the shangri-las so great?

lorelei56, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

QUEENS REPRESENT

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I got a Shangri-Las bootleg where they sing a song called "Eat Shit, Motherfuckers" - they were so far ahead of the curve

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

tell me more, tell me more

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

what colour are his eyes?
i don't know, he's always wearing muthafuckin shades

lorelei56, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

lorelei should win a prize for that last post, we've never had a googler learn to play along this quickly

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

what's a googler? all these terms, man it's too much to keep up with... by the way, enfenette's thighs aint that bad, i've just had a look. you boys been looking at too many christina and britney sites...xx

lorelei56, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

and yes I do know that the above is not the accepted/usual image of Ma$e, you FASCISTS

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Too late! Doomie is making your cards as I type.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

*insert Pee Wee Herman style 'AAAAAAAAAAARGGHHH!' here*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

damn, this whole thread should go into the ILM faq. in fact this thread could pretty much BE the ILM faq.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

yes it should definitely be the ILM faq. it should also be in the fiknjuhy re-routed shyfre file card. thanks for the picture of ma$e, i'm sure he's a lovely man. are you trying to big him up in some kind of PR stunt?

lorelei56, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The Ma$e G0ats!

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

!!!!

Nicole has reconfirmed her genius!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

for some reason I am very amused by earnestness today

Lorelei I'm not in any way associated with Ma$e. I don't know when the Ma$e thing started on ILM, but an image of Ma$e is one of ilx's time-honored ways of derailing a thread (AND it's also a way of saying "this thread has gone off the rails") (BUT it is an ineffective way of saying "lay me down some rails") (which I MEAN)

ILM = this board (stands for "I Love Music" - it's got a non-music related twin called "ILE" (I Love Everything) although now that I think of it ILM may actually stand for "I Love Ma$e"

"faq" = "frequently asked questions" - many sites have one where somebody who's new can go to learn what all the abbreviations mean, and so forth. But the only really important thing around here is that you Honour the Fire.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, i AM the thread. i am also very earnest when i get confused. ah fuck it, i'm gonna go and make some music rather than talkng about it.... thankyou for a lovely evening of amusement.
ps i ALWAYS honour the fire...

lorelei56, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

YES

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

ps the earnestness I was amused by was my own - wasn't making fun of you or anything! it's just that usually when people start asking "what's goin' on?" everybody around these parts just gets more & more obscure, which is usually very funny but then I always feel bad for the person who's asking a genuine question

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck, i got too involved, now i've missed the dress i was gonna buy on ebay, man i've been waiting all week to get that dress. sheeeeeeeet

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

A couple of the many things I absolutely love about the Shangri-Las: Shadow Morton may be my favourite pop producer, someone always ready to do the outrageous - the bit where Mary Ann (I think) screams "Mama!" and the cellos come crashing in is one of pop's most moving moments, I think; Mary Ann (again I think it's her) is one of pop's greatest ever talkers, and the bit at the end of 'Give Him A Great Big Kiss' where she breathes "Close. Very, very close," is among music's sexiest moments; and this leads on to note 3, in that I think the Shangri-Las' sexiness partly derives from the feeling that they probably knew more about fucking than almost any other girl group of their approximate era. Whether this last has any factual basis I have no idea, but it's always been my impression.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I was trying to track down some specifics about the Shangra's bad-assness and could only find hints around the edges. Here's the most extensive single bio I came across:

http://www.geocities.com/spectropop/gg/shangrilas.html

Though there's a bunch more here:

http://www.geocities.com/spectropop/gg/shangrilas.html

Dock Miles (Dock Miles), Thursday, 15 April 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw a "Shangri-Las" concert at the World Trade Center back in 1998 or so. Needless to say, no original members.

Mary Weiss is still around and works for...hmm...either a furniture vendor or a real estate firm, I can't remember. It's a company my firm works with on occasion, that I know.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 15 April 2004 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I was gonna go all "HEY! I started this thread years ago, and in a far more articulate way..." but N. and his blue lines saved me the trouble.

However, it's taken a very strange meta-direction since then, so I probably shouldn't bother.

Do you think googlers ever actually read the FAQ? (Is there a way that we can redirect ALL google referals straight to the FAQ page?) I find JD's consistent attitude towards the Random Googlers far more interesting than most of what the regulars regularly say, but that's just me being interested in the meta again...

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 15 April 2004 07:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I was working in a remote part of Germany one time, and got a cheap "Greatest Hits" CD there. Hearing "Past Present Future" for the first time properly, was a real "My god, I don't believe someone was actually talking about this, in what? 1965 or so?" moment...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 15 April 2004 07:33 (twenty-two years ago)

yes super-kate, we tried to continue your wonderful thread but everyone ignored it so we thought we'd start a new one... us googlers (apparently one of the worst things in the world to be, just a notch under supporting the bush administration, and only slightly better than being a child pornographer) don't know anything about the wonderful word of ilx, and probably shouldn't even be allowed on the internet let alone into this private message board. anyway, there's a picture of ma$e which means 'the end' or something.

by the way, that past, present and future essay, very interesting.... i love analysis of bygone culture. hindsight is a wonderful thing.

lorelei56, Thursday, 15 April 2004 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone shoot me or something, I really don't like that song. It's nice enough, but y'know "MAMA!" just kills it. And "I Can Never Go Home Anymore" had a tune of its own, I think, maybe it didn't? It had a nice arrangement to back up the crying.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 15 April 2004 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

lorelei56 is right - no one posted to the older thread when she revived it. Maybe if she'd waited a bit longer they would have, but the shouting on this one attracted people. It's a funny old world.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 15 April 2004 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

shouting's big and clever and very, very attractive...

lorelei56, Thursday, 15 April 2004 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, it's a good thing that 1) I'm not a moderator, and 2) Ned is not obsessive about the Shangs, or this thread would have been LOCKED SO FAST YER HEAD WOULD HAVE SPUN!!!

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i really don't think my head would have spun, it's hardly gonna change my life if it gets locked. go on lock it, go on! oh no you can't coz you're not a moderator. oh well, never mind, something to work towards maybe?
ps, you clearly have ownership on the shangri-las and any related products, therefore i hereby give my agreement for this thread to be locked up...

lorelei56, Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

(I was actually just making a comment on Ned's rash and uncommented-on locking of that MBV thread than a comment on this thread...)

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha when was that? I nearly locked this thread for a minute as a very funny joke.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Click on the blue lines above, Andrew!

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, are you going to let him GET AWAY WITH THAT?!?! Moderation abuse! Moderation abuse!

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Moderation abuse! Moderation abuse!

Form an orderly queue please...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I do believe she's losing her cool!

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose I COULD unlock it. It's a debate I'd like to see continue, actually, I like "Isn't Anything" a lot more than "Loveless"

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't want the thread unlocked. I just want Ned beaten. With sticks. ;-)

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Why unlock it? It's been agreed by moderators for ages that duplicated threads are getting out of control and that when they're spotted, a link to the others is made and the thread locked.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i think this is hilarious! i'm SO not in your gang! just looking back.... super-kate actually talks to me in brackets!! as if i'm an 'aside'?!!! this is great! it's like when you get a new job and you try to get involved in a conversation, but 'the gang' dismiss you because you're new and don't know the politics! someone should write an essay on computer politics, how the workspace has changed and become more homebased, but the need for in-jokes and group acceptance is still alive and well. hell, we're only human after all.

lorelei56, Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

You're wrong, you know - but I like you.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i'm usually wrong. but everyone still likes me...

lorelei56, Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

lorelei I think you're being defensive - people are joking with with/elbowing you in the ribs, that means we like you. Example of what I mean by defensive: Kate sez "so fast yer head would have spun" & you seemed to take that as something condescending but I'm sure it wasn't - just a phrase meaning "really, really fast." What I'm saying here is it's TOO LATE, you ARE in the gang, there is NO WAY OUT, by this time next week you'll be all "I used to be into the Shangri-La's but now it's all about the Chiffons for me"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been here since October last year, and I'm still unsure what IIRC means. I 'got' U&K yesterday, so hey ya to me...

x-post - mark: "IIRC" is "if I recall correctly," IIRC
