Are the makers any good?

i saw one of their albums "Psychopathia Sexualis" for dirt cheap on vinyl and i'm curious as whether it's worth the pick up.

do tell!

early stuff was OK at best but with every album they released they got worse and worse.

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 17 April 2004 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

nah, I don't know about the later stuff, but the s/t album with the big middle finger on the cover is really good. I'm not sure if it's their debut or not, but I would recommend it.

BornonthEfloor: Makers: Classic or Dud?
BornonthEfloor: my first contribution to ILM in weeks!
Hotel Opera: haha
Hotel Opera: I had to review one of their albums for PF once
BornonthEfloor: i had that album
BornonthEfloor: i traded it for something
BornonthEfloor: i dont remember what
BornonthEfloor: im just glad i dont have it anymore
Hotel Opera: i think i still have it somewhere!
BornonthEfloor: there were a few hot songs
Hotel Opera: i gave it a 3.8
Hotel Opera: I think i could've been meaner
BornonthEfloor: haha
BornonthEfloor: i remember i liked the slow song
Hotel Opera: truly Sub Pop's wilderness years
Hotel Opera: http://pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/m/makers/rock-star-god.shtml
BornonthEfloor: that album they released after looked much worse and seemed to end their career in music
BornonthEfloor: thats the one!
Hotel Opera: I love the fact that the review opens like a typical Pitchfork concept review, except I'm actually quoting the intro to the album
BornonthEfloor: verbatim?
Hotel Opera: yeah
Hotel Opera: the whole first paragraph
BornonthEfloor: jesus
BornonthEfloor: man that album sounds awful
BornonthEfloor: sounds like a real zero
Hotel Opera: yeah 3.8 was far too kind
BornonthEfloor: music is creul
BornonthEfloor: it can dupe you into thinking you are doing something good
Hotel Opera: yeah really
Hotel Opera: it's scary shit
Hotel Opera: i'm petrified about the idea of making a record
BornonthEfloor: its fucking russian roulette!
BornonthEfloor: i mean maybe if they makers kept it straight garage they'd still be around
Hotel Opera: look at the other Makers review in the PF archives: http://pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/m/makers/strangest-parade.shtml
Hotel Opera: it starts with a similiar intro as mine, except it's real!
BornonthEfloor: jesus they were allowed to make music after that???
Hotel Opera: yeah Sub Pop should've passed them down to whatever the Pacific Northwest indie equivalent of Koch would be
BornonthEfloor: man this is so depressing
BornonthEfloor: the makers are a case study of when things just dont go right with your band
Hotel Opera: this one got a 3.5, though...so at least they didn't get too much worse
Hotel Opera: I remember that Alternative Press was TOTALLY on their jock, too
BornonthEfloor: i'm going to allmusic now, i hope that is where it ends
Hotel Opera: 5/5 reviews and big features
BornonthEfloor: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=UIDMISS70311062329392282&sql=Bu2jw7iaog71r
BornonthEfloor: !!!!!!!!!!!
BornonthEfloor: look at those stars!!!!!!!!
Hotel Opera: hahaha
Hotel Opera: and the AMG pick is the one i reviewed
BornonthEfloor: amazing
BornonthEfloor: but you know
BornonthEfloor: the only fair way to review a band is to start with someone who already likes them
BornonthEfloor: which is clearly where jim smith starts
BornonthEfloor: but whatever
BornonthEfloor: i dont knopw
Hotel Opera: hehe
BornonthEfloor: im drinking vodka i spent $15 on for less than half a liter
Hotel Opera: AMG's star system is out of control anyway
Hotel Opera: nice
BornonthEfloor: its noble
Hotel Opera: my one-beer buzz has pretty much worn off now
BornonthEfloor: thats like ratings for hardcore makers fans probably
BornonthEfloor: although
BornonthEfloor: if i liked the makers
BornonthEfloor: i dont know, i couldnt say
BornonthEfloor: hahaha
Hotel Opera: if you liked the Makers, you probably wouldn't want to start with their fruity 'psychedelic' album
BornonthEfloor: psychopasthisc czxzx sexualis seemed good enough
BornonthEfloor: you couldnt expect anymore from them than that
BornonthEfloor: a few catchy garage songs
Hotel Opera: oh god, there's a song called "sex is good food"
Hotel Opera: if I can find it I'm totally going to listen to it this weekend
BornonthEfloor: the makers dont have hardcore fans, do they?
Hotel Opera: i would hope not
Hotel Opera: just good ol' Jim Smith
BornonthEfloor: i think what drew me to them originally is that their name was similiar to the make up
Hotel Opera: it's really sick how I can't bring myself to get rid of CD's, not even worthless promo's like this
BornonthEfloor: i used to be like that
Hotel Opera: haha retro clothes! the word make!
Hotel Opera: that's why you bought M.A.D.E., isn't it?
Hotel Opera: haha
BornonthEfloor: i bought MADE out of sympathy for bleek.
Hotel Opera: hahah
Hotel Opera: he does look kind of sad on the cover
BornonthEfloor: i was okay with bleek before that
BornonthEfloor: no, he looks bewildered
Hotel Opera: haha "Too Many Fuckers (On The Streets)"
BornonthEfloor: HUH???????
Hotel Opera: i can't believe I didn't have more fun with the song titles in that Makers review
Hotel Opera: "When We Was Gods"
Hotel Opera: "Someone Else's Song"(!)
BornonthEfloor: :(
Hotel Opera: hehe and the AMG review points out the same Rocky Horror comparison i did, except favorably
BornonthEfloor: hahah
Hotel Opera: and I *like* a lot of the music in Rocky Horror
BornonthEfloor: hehe
Hotel Opera: man i'm surprised anyone even gave a shit enough to start an ILM thread on the Makers
BornonthEfloor: joke's on us! we've been talking about em for a half hour!
Hotel Opera: hahaha yeah
Hotel Opera: but it was entertaining at least
BornonthEfloor: i dunno i'm kinda sad about all this
Hotel Opera: i think the entertainment will come to a screeching halt as soon as i find and put on the record though
BornonthEfloor: im so glad i dont have that anymore
Hotel Opera: found it!
BornonthEfloor: oh no!
Hotel Opera: i'm tempted to stop the Ted Leo record and put it on right now
Hotel Opera: sorry, good retro, it's time for bad retro
Hotel Opera: hehe my roommate just came home and i instinctively turned down the Makers out of some deep embarrassment
BornonthEfloor: haha yeah
BornonthEfloor: i think i felt guilty to the person i traded it to
Hotel Opera: ooh, and the press one-sheet is tucked into the booklet
BornonthEfloor: haha nice
Hotel Opera: haha i just noticed the album's tracklist is seperated into halves
BornonthEfloor: oh no!
Hotel Opera: Part One: "Knives, Needles, Bullets and God"
Hotel Opera: Part Two: "How Hard Is Your Heart?"
Hotel Opera: jesus, how could I not use this in the review!?
Hotel Opera: dear Ryan Schreiber,
Included below are some new mean things I have to say about that Makers record, please revise my review accordingly, thx
