"Due to the cancellation of the Throbbing Gristle’s RE~TG event at Camber sands the event shall now be added as a third weekend to 2005’s All Tomorrow’s Parties. This means that there will now be 3 consecutive ATP weekends in 2005, with Throbbing Gristle joining Jake & Dinos Chapman (dicks) and Vincent Gallo in curating a weekend each. The dates are:

Week 1 - April 15-17 - curated by Throbbing Gristle
Week 2 - April 22-24 - curated by Jake & Dinos Chapman
Week 2 - April 29-May 1 - curated by Vincent Gallo"

- Is this alienating many people that would normally go to ATP?

The TG event this year has been cancelled, and despite the denial of poor ticket sales, I would suggest that was at least part of the reason. The Chapmans?! That won't be crawling with twats, will it? Worryingly, the most promising is Vincent Gallo; he didn't exactly go down a storm this year.

The line ups were fantastic this year, and I'm just concerned that they won't be in 2005.

Stewart Gardiner (Stewart Gardiner), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Excuse me but what the F*CK do the Chapmans have to do with music? If they want to curate some filthy art-thing, they're welcome to it. But I really don't see them having much of a business curating a music festival.

I mean, why not just let Damien Hirst do one and have Blur play all weekend, then?

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure the Chapmans (grrr) will do their utmost to destroy the usually congenial atmosphere of ATP. Hold on a second, no they won't because no one is going to go!

Stewart Gardiner (Stewart Gardiner), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a bit harsh for Foundation to call the Chapmans "dicks" in their own press release.

Oh I see - you added it

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a discussion about this over here already. Personally, I'm more intrigued by The Chapmans. I also like the fact that they are pushing it a bit to see what happens. At least they're not getting too formulaic which I like and respect.

xpost!
THere did used to be a bit on the ATP site stating that, although they were being regularly being pestered to have blur curate/play, they would never have them.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh great, so the Chapmans will bring in a bunch of wanky sound art and "experimental" music. Oh joy. I'll be staying home then.

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't actually, I took it from the Do Something Pretty site, so Emma must have added it. Bravo!

Stewart Gardiner (Stewart Gardiner), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

[May be not safe for work depending on your boss]

bring it on, I say

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn. I was hoping TG would be cancelled properly. This sucks. The Chapmans can disappear up their own anal canal and Gallo is a twat. But still, I reserve judgment until the line up is announced. Is this info officially released yet?

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect that there may be a limit placed on the experimentalness of the line ups as a result of the dissapointing sales when autechre did it

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

(This is not actually a dis on the Chapman's art. I just think they should stick to making art, as their soundart and the soundart/experimental music they like is fairly dire. And this is confirmed by HSA, who actually *likes* soundart and experimental music, so it's not just my prejudices.)

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I was about to say, Kate, wouldn't that description mean HSA actually gets *invited* to play? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you let us know what you know about what they like?

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

As long as the Chapmans take care to put together a diverse bill, as opposed to just a bunch of Mego laptop punchers, I reckon they could be one of the most interesting weekends of ATP so far. Weren't they supposed to be making site-specific artworks for the Throbbing Gristle weekend? That could be good. Also, I think their interest in music extends a little further beyond sound art; I'm fairly sure they're into extreme metal and stuff as well. Agreed, though, they are going to have to reveal a fair bit of this bill before they sell any tickets whatsoever.

Jason J, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

(Not necessarily, Ned, though you never know...)

(He was invited to play the cancelled TG one several times, but declined.)

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone else think think "the foundation" is a pretty sketchy affair?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you let us know what you know about what they like?

Wire, Russell Haswell, Merzbow, Pita, Whitehouse...

Jason J, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't know what else they like, but the Chapman's recently collaborated with WIRE for a show they put on at the Barbican, designing the sets and supplying visuals. I think Wire played two sets - one of the whole of Pink Flag and the second set was all new stuff. Personally, I'd flipping love the chance to see that.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone else think think "the foundation" is a pretty sketchy affair?

In what sense?

Jason J, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Wire, Russell Haswell, Merzbow, Pita, Whitehouse...

I have no problem with this whatsoever. I'm off to see wire play in Edinburgh tonight belive it or not. Their set at ATP 2 years ago was staggering

Sounds like the thing at the barbican was pretty ok.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

All of which except Wire were invited to the TG weekend (and confirmed, I think), and one of the press releases says the bands invited by TG were being invited again (with some extras added).

I don't think even Barry Hogan is mental enough to have two near-identical weekends of experimental noise.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

sketchy in the sense that: have any of the ATPs gone off without some sort of major cancellation, rescheduling, venue change, change of lineup, etc. ?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Well it didn't work when autechre tried it...

xpost -

I suspect that's the case with pretty much every festival ever, they just aren't so good at hiding it.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly. Can't blame anyone in the States for drawing that conclusion, mind, although I think there were mitigating circumstances in every fuckup

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

well i'm also referring to the 2 ATPs in the US from firsthand exp.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

All of which except Wire were invited to the TG weekend (and confirmed, I think), and one of the press releases says the bands invited by TG were being invited again (with some extras added).

Whitehouse weren't playing either. But yeah, that crossover did occur to me. Hopefully, though, it'll encourage the Chapmans to look a little further beyond the usual suspects.

sketchy in the sense that: have any of the ATPs gone off without some sort of major cancellation, rescheduling, venue change, change of lineup, etc. ?

The American ones have looked pretty sketchy, sure - but the vast majority of the British ones have basically sold out I think. What was the deal with the Autechre weekend again?

Jason J, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

It was billed as two weekends then reduced to one to give it more 'focus'.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The first ATP was six months late!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

also hmmm's moniker swings back into relevance!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It was as good as sold out IIRC - it's only in the last few years that we've automatically expected festivals of all stripes to sell out. If the fucking absurdity of getting Glasto tickets now means that things that take a few months longer to fill up are seen as a failure, then it's a very sad indictment of the way people are viewing music

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It's maybe a similar symptom to that of a tv show a single having to be a hit straight away otherwise it's just not worth bothering with.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The second Shellac weekend in 2002 didn't sell out - or if it did then it must have been in the week immediately prior to it. I remember weighing up going to the second weekend on the way home from the first so I could see some of the bands for a second time, and Bob Weston announcing from the stage on the Sunday there were still chalets left.

Whitehouse were definitely in early versions of the line-up on the TG website, although they never made it as far as the ATP site. There's something on another thread in here, I'm sure.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah. i remember being really jealous of my friends coming back from the first shellac weekend, and they were telling me to go to the 2nd one.

Maybe it didn't sell out because it was curated by the same people. So it was more like a repeat of the first weekend, while this year could have been considered 2 different festivals. and next year 3.

jellybean (jellybean), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I don't really get what's wrong with Wire, Russell Haswell, Merzbow, Pita, Whitehouse. I've seen all of them except Whitehouse, and they're excellent.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Wire's flag:burning night at the Barbican was good - although the 'Send' performance (with set dressing by Es Devlin) was far better than the Pink Flag section (with the Chapmans). I very much doubt they'll do the exact same thing again.

Off to see them the next two nights (Aberdeen and Glasgow). particularly excited about the Aberdeen gig, as they are playing two short sets in a 200-capacity space, which should be cosy.

coco, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that just because of the sheer size of ATP, Foundation have to be wary of putting something as flat-out divisive as a mostly noise bill. Most people go to these things as dilletantes, I think, hoping to pick up on a bit of stuff they haven't heard before. That's why it suits the festival to have a bit of something for everyone. And that's where the Autechre weekend and the Throbbing Gristle weekend have really gone wrong, I think: they really seem to be geared towards the people that know their Hecker from their Pita, which leaves a lot of people out in the cold. I like a bit of noise as much as the next man, but I know from experience I've little interest in a whole three-day weekend of it.

Jason J, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

No Fun Fest.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahaha

NUMBER 1 TERRY RILEY FAN (ex machina), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, just goes to show - you can get away with anything in Brooklyn.

Jason J, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The Chapmans should make a statement by advertising the following bill:

Fiery Furnaces
Shins
Wolf Eyes
Ted Leo

And actually booking this line-up:

Ying Yang Twins
Big Tymers
Dipset
Elephant Man

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 29 April 2004 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

IT WOULD CERTAINLY SHAKE PEOPLE'S LITTLE WORLDS UP.

Really, though, the obvious problem with a lineup of Merzbow/Whitehouse/nastyass Mego ppl is there most likely aren't 3,500 people in Britain who actually like that music that much.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 29 April 2004 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I would so happy if Elephant Man played I think my head would explode.
