Prison music nowadays

Presently enjoying "Angola Prison Spirituals" (Arhoolie), and wondering: What is the present state of prison music, as played by the inmates? Are prisoners even permitted musical instruments anymore? Are there any new/new-ish recordings along these lines?

There's also this, but it's not quite the same question.

What is its deal?

ben tausig, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Some prisons have radio stations that play music out on a closed-loop system, to receivers throughout the prison, and some of those stations are even staffed by inmates. I don't know about instruments and stuff, though.

Last night, my girlfriend told me that if I buy her some expensive dress she's been lusting after, she'll have ass sex with me.

I hate to post this link again (have done so in another context) but here we go:

"Both are now considered to be amongst the top tier of flamenco singers. The contest is now a national event, held every other year."

the angola prison collections are astonishing.

i also have a rounder cd of "rhymes" recorded in prisons (it is called get your ass in the water and swim like me)--they are extremely obscene, and often hilarious in a very, very dark way.

http://www.rounder.com/images/album/ROUN/ROUN2014_Cover.jpg

i suspect the rhyming dozens have come and gone, but no doubt there are a lot of raps being made in prisons in their place.

i don't know how many prisons maintain collections of musical instruments and otherwise encourage musical activities. the angola pen. had a lot of guitarists (but only a few guitars), a few harmony groups, etc. i wonder if the increasingly rationalized (i was going to say "draconian," but then chain gangs are pretty fucking draconian) character of american prisons has eliminated these sort of things....

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

btw jon i'm trying really hard not to let you upset me, but the whole anal rape/prison meme is really stupid and offensive.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

have there been any rappers "discovered" in prison, a la leadbelly or robert pete williams?

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

(ok sorry here's a serious link re: prison rape and then we can all get back on topic) http://www.spr.org/

This is sort of what I'm getting at. No doubt there are great prison rappers. I wonder why they haven't been documented? Security measure? Lack of interest/access?

ben tausig, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

prison rappers are as disgusting as any other kind of rapper (ALTHOUGH its called RAPPIST). i cant beleive you guys are talking about this. leadbelly was NOT a rappIST.

This joke has now been made.

maybe no governors have an interest. lead belly was released from prison (into john lomax's "care" wtf) by the governor.

this thread title sounds like some old fogey's lament: "oh, prison music nowadays!"

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

six months pass...
interesting...i was reading about the rapper x-raided today. never heard anything by him, but it sounded curiously compelling. i think he recorded a number of albums while serving hard time for killing an elderly woman. one record was called "venegance is mine" so i dunno if he shows much remorse, but the descriptions of prison life are supposed to be bleakly entertaining. i may pick something up by he.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 30 December 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if he brags about it in his rhymes like 50 Cent does about getting shot.
"Yo, I killed an old lady. Don't fuck with me. I'm hard."

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Thursday, 30 December 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is he "X-Raided"? Did he fuck the old lady before he killed her?

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Thursday, 30 December 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

you're not hard til you've killed an old lady

artdamages (artdamages), Thursday, 30 December 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

oh no, he had an album out before he killed the old lady:

Shortly after releasing his 1992 debut LP Psycho Active, he was convicted on murder charges -- in fact, the album's violent lyrics were even cited as evidence at the trial.

d'oh

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Thursday, 30 December 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

whoops

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 30 December 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Word on the street is Scott Peterson owned a Kayne West CD and therefore was ill-mannered

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 30 December 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I met a guy once who I heard ended up going to prison for killing an old man who tried to steal his lunch. I wonder if he raps now.

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Thursday, 30 December 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude Peterson was already in jail when the Kanye CD came out. I think he seems like more of an Eminem fan. You know, "Kill You", "97 Bonnie & Clyde" etc.

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Thursday, 30 December 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Peterson burned some early demos from the sessions off slsk, though

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 30 December 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, maybe he copped "Through The Wire" and shit.

OLD MAN RIP

I'm serious ... Ti-i-i-i-im (deangulberry), Thursday, 30 December 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

That's some OG Loc shit right there
"I'm hard man, I'm gangsta!"
"What you done?"
"I straight killed this old lady!"

I want more details on the case. Why'd he kill her?

The rapper is being sued by his victim's family under the "Son of Sam" law, and tougher prison regulations mean that this could be his last album.

awwwww.

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Thursday, 30 December 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

187, gang related, I'm accused
And after every court date my face is on the news
They say I wrote a song about a murder
I maintain my innocence, it's nothing but a coincidence
I'll admit it looks kind of shadey
from the outside looking in
The situation is serious but people don't comprehend
I was 17 years young back in '92
Facing 25 to life for something I didn't do
My song is supposed to be a big admission on my part
And they're using the lyrics against me when my trial gets ready
to start
My songs are being misinterpritated
It ain't nothing but the D.A. trying to prove premeditated
They've got X-Raided stuck, majorly crossed up
The D.A. got a f**ked up witness and my lawyer is a dump truck
I've been sitting in the county, three years have already went
by
They're pressuring my Locs, trying to get them to testify
Snitching ain't no joke, it's hazardous to your health
When you point one finger at me, you're pointing three back at
yourself
My homies got convicted for murder in the first degree
Ain't no doubt about it, they'll try to do worse to me
They take me in the court room in front of an all white jury
With the family looking me with barely concealed fury
My lawyer standing next to me, prepared to represent
And help me get convicted cause to him
I'm guilty till proven innocent...

Why they trying to give me deuce-5 to life?
They trying to give me 25 to life cause I'm guilty till proven
innocent...

I open up the front page of the Sacramento Bee
And read the article that Dan McGrath wrote about me
He has his own opinion and it's his job to write it
I say he's being biased and completly one sided
The media write their stories for the public to consume
And any chance I have of getting a fair trial in Sac is doomed
Any potential jurors mind is being contaminated
From reading all the bull they wrote about X-Raided
I never told anybody to go out kill somebody's folks

And blaming it all on me and
a song I wrote is a complete joke
They're looking for a move but they're looking in the dark
Putting a noose around my neck and a bullet in my heart
Just because I'm capable of killing doesn't mean I kill
And just because I'm capable of killing doesn't mean I will
I wish they all knew, how can I make you feel me?
X-Raided didn't do it but I've gotta ride cause I'm guilty till
proven innocent...

Why they trying to give me deuce-5 to life?
They trying to give me 25 to life cause I'm guilty till proven
innocent...

I'm knowing I'm going to end up in the pen
Fighting my appeal and hoping that I win
It's me and Baby Bread fighting this f**ked up case
Like Dooney and B-Dub trying to get these years erased
In Sac there ain't no love when you're from the Garden Blocc
Maniac, C-Mooney, Baby Snake and Lil' Venom already got washed
I'm trying to keep my head up but my load is getting heavy
It makes me want to do like Sicx: take some Tylenol and get it
over with
But instead I just maintain and do everything to keep my
composure
Representing the Blocc to the fullest and riding like a soldier
I told you fools the X-Loc ain't going out like the average
I didn't kill your folks but if you run up then I gotta loc up
like a savage
On that ass, bitch, it ain't nothing personal thang, it's just
about survival
And I'm going to be 125 years old before I die
if I can help it
You made your threats and I felt it but I ain't dead yet
So you niggas talking about
what you're going to do when you see me
I'll be on the weights, wearing state boots and a beanie
I wish I didn't have to be this way but it's reality
So I'm strapped based on the fact
I'm guilty till proven innocent...

Why they trying to give me deuce-5 to life?
They trying to give me 25 to life
cause I'm guilty till proven innocent...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 30 December 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh of course he's innocent, no doubt. Yeah.
