They put out their self-titled debut last summer, but I'm just now hearing the single "Knuck if you Buck" and "Stilletos" (the flip side) on "urban" stations in NC. Pretty minimal production -- minor key organs and simple clap beats. But, when I heard "Stilletos" the the girl sounded a bit like Gangsta Boo from Three 6 Mafia, and I was wondering if anyone knew if it was her.

Nah its Princess and Diamond. They both post on the Crime Mob message board, or they did a few months back anyway. I think they're like 17 or something.

Haha Crime Mobb message board. I've only heard "Knuck If You Buck", but it's pretty great.

alex, you should hear "stilletos" or "white tee (girls version)".

rob mackey (mackey), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Can you email 'em to me?

I like the idea that these girls were picked to rap on these records AFTER posting on the message board, but I imagine it is the other way around haha

i'll ysi 'em. give me a moment.

rob mackey (mackey), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you!

of course. there're also a bunch of "white tee" parodies/reimaginings by crime mobb. "red tee" is just a menacing beat with a few lines and a WAY-SLOWED-DOWN "bitch!!!" after each one.

i'm getting strangely excited about this and all the swisha house stuff.

"Stillettos" is great, not as great as "Knuck if you Buck" but still pretty fantastic. STILLETTOS. PUMPS. IN. THE CLUB.

Knuck if You Buck

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

the best part is the "we rockin' stil'etas, we rockin' stil'etas" bit.

I think the people in crime mobb all went to high school together. There was a debate on the message board abt the fact that apparently one of the guys wrote their lyrics, and some people were avidly defending them saying it didn't matter who wrote the lyrics.

"their" = princess and diamond.

deej., Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks for that link, frank. i shoulda searched. i noticed someone mentioned a gangsta boo remix version somewhere in the thread. that may be where i made the connection.

there's a horror movie soundtrack aesthetic to a lot of the "second tier" crunk outfits' beats. knuck if you buck is a prime example. the chime line reminds me a little bit of the spooky halloween figure.

A great song is a great song. This blew up some parties i went to. It is a hypnotized rip-off but a very very fucking good one. I like a couple other songs on the album too, although it's not like a great album or anything.

deej., Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i wouldn't call it a direct rip-off. in fact, i don't think it's anywhere near a rip-off. i think it's a good move to mine that sort of ground when looking for crunk beats.

Half of the south has been biting from Hypnotize Minds for a while now. Its nothin' new. I love the little melody in Knuck If You Buck. Especially where it goes to those sad chords.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Saturday, 19 March 2005 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

man "Knuck If You Buck" reached saturation like last summer. are y'all British or something.

I think I like "I'll Beat Yo Azz" better than "Knuck".

Stylus singles jukebox reviewed "Still Tippin" for the first time today. Slowly but surely.

deej., Saturday, 19 March 2005 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

well in a way that's more excusable because it's just now peaking. although that singles thing is one of the only things I regularly click on Stylus and it's almost always disappointing.

there's a horror movie soundtrack aesthetic to a lot of the "second tier" crunk outfits' beats.

I don't know what you mean by "beats" here, but harmonically and melodically, all tiers of crunk have been mining that aesthetic from the get-go.

As a matter of fact, I would be aided greatly if you people could provide me with synonyms for "horror film," "suspense film," "moody," "doleful Eastern European," "Vlad the Impaler graveyard atmospherics," and so forth, as I don't want to keep repeating the same words when I keep repeating the same ideas.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Saturday, 19 March 2005 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

stop writing about rap music?

scg, Saturday, 19 March 2005 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Or, you know, if he likes it he can write about what he wants.
