From Melodic.Rock.Com:

"Roxy Music have reformed to record their first LP in more than 20 years -- and their first in more than 30 years with Brian Eno. Contact Music reports that the newly reformed Roxy Music will include the five members who appeared on both of the band's first two albums, 1972's Roxy Music and 1973's For Your Pleasure-- Eno, Bryan Ferry, Andy Mackay, Phil Manzanera, and Andy Thompson."

This, I thought, was bound to happen.

What we want? Sex with T.V. stars! What you want? Ian Riese-Moraine! (Eastern Ma, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I have just cum in my pants.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

will Eno sport feathers on stage???

Silky Sensor (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Eno NOT back in Roxy Music.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll just go and put me head in the oven, then.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Trying tossing your pants in there while you're at it.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Roxy Music were better without Eno (and Eno was better without Roxy Music)

Didn't PFM post this as well, then later retracted?

That 'ol rascal Eno IS back in Roxy Music! Or, at least "involved" in working on the new album.

:0

van igloo (van smack), Sunday, 19 March 2006 01:58 (twenty years ago)

And Chris Thomas too!

D. Bachyrycz, Sunday, 19 March 2006 02:15 (twenty years ago)

And a million hearts swoon.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 19 March 2006 02:16 (twenty years ago)

I don't expect it will make a tremendous sonic difference in any case. Eno and Ferry have just been paving different sides of the middle of the road for the last twenty years anyway.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Sunday, 19 March 2006 02:40 (twenty years ago)

Maybe he'll get all Black Dicey on 'em.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 19 March 2006 02:59 (twenty years ago)

Soooo many drag queens are already hoping they'll make the audition for the cover model of the new studio and remix albums...

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Sunday, 19 March 2006 03:56 (twenty years ago)

Couldn't get to sleep last night.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 March 2006 04:26 (twenty years ago)

Although I admit I'd offer to apply the velcro wizard hair fasteners to Eno's temples.

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Sunday, 19 March 2006 04:35 (twenty years ago)

Either that or they can just hire Jimmy Flemoin of the Frogs to do synth for the live shows.

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Sunday, 19 March 2006 04:36 (twenty years ago)

Either that or they can just hire Jimmy Flemion of the Frogs to do synth for the live shows.

That is such a good call.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Sunday, 19 March 2006 06:15 (twenty years ago)

Maybe this news is all coming from one source that made an unfortunate misspelling, and it's LENO that's in the studio with Roxy Music.

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Sunday, 19 March 2006 07:26 (twenty years ago)

Actually, Chris Thomas is the really encouraging news.

Grey, Ian (IanBrooklyn), Sunday, 19 March 2006 07:40 (twenty years ago)

Chris Thomas has never done a good production job, apart from maybe with Pulp.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 19 March 2006 09:14 (twenty years ago)

Unbelievable, hell has frozen over again.

BeeOK (boo radley), Sunday, 19 March 2006 09:49 (twenty years ago)

donut I think you'll find that the misspelling has actually obscured that roxy are taking a more EMO-influenced direction with the new material.

haitch (haitch), Sunday, 19 March 2006 10:27 (twenty years ago)

Okay so it's on the official Bryan Ferry site. That doesn't mean someone isn't pulling the wool over my eyes.

Or worse, Mike RENO from Loverboy

even worse, Emo Phillips…

veronica moser (veronica moser), Sunday, 19 March 2006 15:52 (twenty years ago)

Has this kind of reunion EVER been to the credit of the group?

Is there actually enough work for Eno, Chris Thomas, AND Rhett Davies?

Mitya (mitya), Sunday, 19 March 2006 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Gimme Jon Gustafson on bass!

The only thing I really found lacking about Roxy's sound over the past few years is the bass...I don't know who that bassist was (some younger guy) but it was way too "bass." I'm hoping for some of the clarity you could hear on 'Siren' and others...sort of that R+B influence.

Patrick South (Patrick South), Sunday, 19 March 2006 16:22 (twenty years ago)

They should bring in Wetton and Jobson for the ultimate prog-rock freakout.

Mitya (mitya), Sunday, 19 March 2006 23:11 (twenty years ago)

I really hope it won't be 'Avalon Pt.2'.

zeus (zeus), Monday, 20 March 2006 08:12 (twenty years ago)

Hope Eno dusts off the ol' VCS3!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 20 March 2006 08:43 (twenty years ago)

Now that the rumour is confirmed, I missed the opportunity to speculate that, due to the spelling mistake theory, it was Ono who had joined Roxy Music. Just imagine that.

ratty, Monday, 20 March 2006 09:47 (twenty years ago)

I thought they were talking about their new E.L.O. influences.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 20 March 2006 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Am I the only one who wouldn't be disapointed with an Avalon Pt 2?

Jeff K (jeff k), Monday, 20 March 2006 15:01 (twenty years ago)

I was going to say no, but then I thought that while I love Avalon I feel they shouldn't go for Pt 2. I don't think they will, either.

willem -- (willem), Monday, 20 March 2006 15:13 (twenty years ago)

"boys and girls" was avalon pt 2 anyway

I hope frantic is an indicator of how this record will sound, it's the most vital thing Ferry has done since Siren, I think.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 20 March 2006 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Chris Thomas has never done a good production job, apart from maybe with Pulp.

Geir never fails to amuse me.

I hope frantic is an indicator of how this record will sound, it's the most vital thing Ferry has done since Siren, I think.

OTM. After careful consideration, I think it's his best solo work and would squeeze into a Roxy/Ferry Top 5 without too much trouble.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 20 March 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Actually what I'm hoping for is a For Your Pleasure Pt. 2 but we all know that's highly unlikely. A cross between Frantic and Another Day on Earth wouldn't be all that terrible, no?

Jeff K (jeff k), Monday, 20 March 2006 15:31 (twenty years ago)

Hmm... I guess I should listen to Frantic again, then. "I Thought" (the track with Eno) was the only thing from that album I kept, and it was pretty underwhelming.

People hoping for "Avalon, Part 2" seem kind of silly. While you might argue that Avalon might be better than Ferry's solo work, it hardly seems significantly different. I doubt the old guys have the fire any more, but if we want something intrinsically "Roxy" then drawing inspiration from the early albums would be more interesting.

Mitya (mitya), Monday, 20 March 2006 15:33 (twenty years ago)

if you listen to the latest works of ferry and eno, the conclusion for that "reunion" is that it's not going to be so good.

sam puller, Monday, 20 March 2006 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Eno has consistently played on solo albums by Ferry, Manzanera, et al., as have many of the Roxy players. So the fact that Eno's sitting in for a few new tracks is honestly no big deal. How this will be any different from, say, "Mamouna" or "Frantic" is anyone's guess, unless it features Eno as a contributing songwriter as well (like the last song on "Frantic"). To be honest, I hope it's more like Manzanera's last couple of records, which were great.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 20 March 2006 18:36 (twenty years ago)

What I expect from the reunion:

(1) Manzanera extracting weird noises from his guitar, then treated by Eno to sound doubly weird.

(2) Bryan Ferry enunciating syllables again (to be fair, he regained the habit on Frantic).

(3) A top-drawer clothing line styling them and underwriting the tour.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 20 March 2006 18:42 (twenty years ago)

The administrator of www.bryanferry.com (the official site) has deleted the snippet about the new album + Eno's involvement. Dunno what that means...

Louis Balfour (Louis Balfour), Monday, 20 March 2006 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Front page news of Brian Eno's site confirms that he is NOT involved at all in Roxy Music's future plans.

http://www.enoweb.co.uk/
"
NME.com is reporting Ananova.com's story that Roxy Music has reformed with Brian Eno in the line-up. This UNTRUE and just in-good-faith wishful thinking from the journalists -- Brian has no involvement with the band's current recording or tour plans. All that happened was that Brian popped in to visit the members of the group when they were in the studio. Hearing of this, some journalist somewhere decided that it is a truth universally acknowledged that a solo artist in possession of a fine career must be in want of tinsel jackets, peacock feathers, ego clashes, laundry ruminations and everything else that goes with rejoining a band he left 33 years ago. Great oak false rumours from tiny fact acorns grow...

Jeff K (jeff k), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 03:59 (twenty years ago)

When's he gonna work with Iggy Pop again? Mass Production is the only song I've listened to in the last 5 months.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 04:37 (twenty years ago)

While that's entirely logical since it's one of the most beautiful songs ever (and easy to get sucked into, I agree), Eno's had nothing to do with it as far as I know. Bowie produced and Visconti mixed it.

willem -- (willem), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 07:50 (twenty years ago)

Anyone else see the Roxy Music "Da Vinci Code" parody posted here? I haven't read that book, but I've heard enough second-hand stuff to find the Eno conspiracy theory amusing.

one month passes...
Wait a minute, Eno IS going to be on the upcoming new Roxy album.

http://arts.guardian.co.uk/filmandmusic/story/0,,1777560,00.html

If you scroll down you'll find these comments from Mr. Eno himself...

"The most anticipated of this wave of collaborations - if not, perhaps by Eno - has been his return to the Roxy Music fold. For the band's album, scheduled for release in the autumn, he provided two songs, at the band's request, and ended up making a keyboard contribution to other tracks. "The strangest thing," he said, "was that they all called me Eno. In those days I was always Eno. I rather liked that. When I was at art school no one called me Brian. It was only when I went to America that people thought it was rude to address me by my surname. So I became Brian."

Working again with Ferry, Andy Mackay, Phil Manzanera and Paul Thompson, there were other reminders of Roxy's heyday in the early 1970s. "The band hadn't changed one bit in terms of its internal dynamics. Just the same chemistry. It made me wonder if people can ever change the chemistry between them. After all that time, the relationships seemed exactly the same."

But he will not be joining them on stage. "They didn't ask me, I think because they know I wouldn't. I don't fancy it. I basically don't like playing live and I'm also worried about people saying, 'Oh, right, he's going back to the old band, then.' It was a big decision for me to do those two days in the studio with them. Not that I don't like them. I like them all. They're nice people. But because I thought, 'Oh, fuck, I'm going to have to spend years talking about this, and it was only two days.'"

Jeff K (jeff k), Friday, 19 May 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

I don't care what people say, I still love Eno.

pleased to mitya (mitya), Friday, 19 May 2006 18:35 (twenty years ago)

when the fuck is this coming out? I have not anticipated an album more in years

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 19 May 2006 19:43 (twenty years ago)

I think it's not coming out until fall.

Of course by that time, Eno will probably be off the album again.

Jeff K (jeff k), Friday, 19 May 2006 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Whew! For a second there I though Eno was going to begin theorising on the cybernetics of Roxy band member chemistry. The man does notice everything, doesn't he?

I

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Friday, 19 May 2006 20:13 (twenty years ago)

I HEART FERRY!

Louis Balfour (Louis Balfour), Friday, 19 May 2006 20:25 (twenty years ago)

You're playing tricks on me again. And I don't believe you. Eno is not going to do any bloody thing with Roxy Music until I see the CD credits in my hand you wankers!

Twitchety Twitch Manic Toy System (Bimble...), Saturday, 20 May 2006 05:39 (twenty years ago)

Add another vote to the skeptic card. My money is on Eno's contibution being his more typical, tasteful, late-period studio "treatments" a la Paul Simon/Laurie Anderson/etc etc., rather than revival of some long-dormant feather-boa superideal of yore. Roxy did some decent rocking on their reunion tour, but I wouldn't expect Eno to bring the noise, VCS3-style, at this late an hour. (Cf., Trevor Horn re-joining the Art of Noise for another pertinent example of earth-shattering reunion leading only to indifferent coffee-table music.)

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Saturday, 20 May 2006 14:22 (twenty years ago)

eno's musical contribution to the last ferry album (I thought) is really , really good; that song is probably better than anything on eno's last record. but I guess he wrote it, and he didn't write anything for the roxy music record, which is too bad.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 20 May 2006 14:23 (twenty years ago)

?! The story linked above specifically says that he wrote two songs.

pleased to mitya (mitya), Saturday, 20 May 2006 14:25 (twenty years ago)

oh I missed that part! well then, it should be good; if any roxy fan hasn't heard "I Thought" they should.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 20 May 2006 14:29 (twenty years ago)

He wrote two songs and contributed keyboards to others, is what the article says.

I just wonder why his website strongly denied it. It's not as though Britney's having his baby or anything. I don't get the secrecy.

Jeff K (jeff k), Saturday, 20 May 2006 14:30 (twenty years ago)

http://www.enoweb.co.uk/ admits they got it wrong (see news)

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 14:41 (twenty years ago)

It may have been that he actually hadn't done the work when previous denials went out -- he went in to visit, it was friendly, etc. and then the reports start -- only afterward do Ferry et al say "Ol' Eno isn't so bad as we remember. Let's see if he's interested."

In the grand scheme of things, he really is a pretty small part of the Roxy story, you know.

pleased to mitya (mitya), Saturday, 20 May 2006 14:43 (twenty years ago)

I think it's more along the lines of...

"Ol' Eno didn't bring up the royalties he thinks we owe him. Perhaps now's a good time to ask him to play on our new record?"

Jeff K (jeff k), Saturday, 20 May 2006 14:47 (twenty years ago)
