Will ILM get TOO popular?

Is it possible that with more and more mentions in publications and posted links that ILM could get too popular and thus become dilluted with typical blog posters (those that post bullshit answers like "this album sucks" end)

I mean what could happen next? Will people be defending the bravery or *gasp* LOUIS XVI (I kid, sort of)with "shut ups" and "your bands suck more!"? Instead of holding real discourses on new and old music.

Orrr am I paranoid about this new great website I have found losing its luster because I love it so?

jmeister (jmeister), Thursday, 31 March 2005 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

shit me, in the time it took me to type three words, hstencil beat me to every one, and two others posted. it is getting crowded in here!

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 31 March 2005 06:41 (twenty-one years ago)

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 31 March 2005 06:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i killed ilm with my big dick

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 31 March 2005 06:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I was being to sentient, I was jsut asking if others thought this could happen. most blog type sites suck in the way I described. As I was writing it I had a feeling this thread could become kind of like this. oh well. My name is actually meister though. Coffees got me wired I cant trust myself. Im going to stop typing.

jmeister (jmeister), Thursday, 31 March 2005 06:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm sorry, i meant to write big fucking dick. i always fuck up old sy titles.

I'm sorry Mr. Cunningham, ILM has reached capacity and you'll have to leave.

Ah well, it's been a good run.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 31 March 2005 06:54 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil

I'm way on edge from the superstrng coffee i made and just now realized the joke in your first post. Shit Im a bit slow on the uptake and a tad defensive eh?

Sidenote to other posters: I wasn't being overly serious with this thread but I think its a somewhat valid question.

jmeister (jmeister), Thursday, 31 March 2005 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Meister, speaking as someone who's been here for 2+ years now, you should know that people have been worrying about this question since almost the very beginning, and there's a sizeable contingent that thinks that all of the negative things that you predict for ILM's future already came to pass in 2002.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 31 March 2005 06:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Its not so bad now is it? Probably not the elite club it once was and that I would guess those people you mentioned would like it to be but you are right about populism at least the lists have a larger sample I suppose.

jmeister (jmeister), Thursday, 31 March 2005 07:03 (twenty-one years ago)

God, I miss old ILX...

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 31 March 2005 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Oops, I mean: Metaquestion: Is ILM Getting Ruder?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 31 March 2005 07:16 (twenty-one years ago)

If ILM becomes too popular for the non-"rockists" among you guys, then just make sure to make it even more popular, and it will soon be invaded by Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake fans once again. Only this time, they will mainly consist of 12 year-old girls ;)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, we'll just have to start more threads about Harry Partch, just to put them off.

cf. Fark - the comments there have so many people that it just ends up as a big string of people trying to do a funny one-liner with no-one engaging with anyone else until something trollishly political arises then it descends into mindless flamewheeze.

well if it ain't novelty it'd be the signifier of some nirvana-style explosion of a new politics-not-sex world culture shtick in American popular music then rah, rah, we could use it and better urban radio exposure (which is friendly to the beats) than the XL route but god aim low bros

ha steve is dissensus supposed to be some kind of solution?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 31 March 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

We'll have to start voting people off soon.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 31 March 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been on ILM for awhile, I guess (probably longer than I'd care to realize actually), but one thing that's seemed to be consistant over the time I've been coming here is a nostalgia for the board in the past. When i joined, lots of people seemed to be nostalgic for before I joined...and now people seem nostalgic for what was going on around the time I joined.

So...either people are prone to nostalgia....or the board keeps getting worse....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 31 March 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

When I started posting, in 1984, everyone here was a millionaire super genius with a gigantic cock. Oh the conversations we had. Nothing at all like what we have now with you... peasants and your "opinions"running around all over the board.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The board was so much better before I started posting, that's for sure.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't look to the past, look to the future. Specifically a future viewed through judicious use of the search function. Also a future that's far less pleased withitself. If I see another MIA thread, I'm going to scream until I'm sick and then kick someone's teeth in.

Ben Dot (1977), Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm having a lot of trouble getting to ilxor.com. However, once I'm on a page I have no trouble clicking on things from within. Is this a symptom of too popular? Also, there seem to be *lots* of new posters which is great, but there also seem to be some new creepy people who don't log in when they post.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

There have always been creepy people who don't log in when they post though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

jmeister is an example of this "NEW" website becoming too popular

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm having a lot of trouble getting to ilxor.com

That actual URL has been extremely fussy lately -- I just go directly to ilx.p3r.net instead.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

What is the difference between ilx.wh3rd.net and ilx.p3r.net anyway?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew would know, but the former is older and the latter newer...and beyond that I'm not sure.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

There have always been creepy people who don't log in when they post though.

Sorry I should clarify that there seem to be a lot of new ones all at once.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 31 March 2005 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I blame M.I.A. actually.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 31 March 2005 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

You think it's just her and Diplo stirring things up?

her?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 31 March 2005 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha I don't actually blame M.I.A., but the creepy anonymous posters do seem to flock to and start a lot of threads about her.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 31 March 2005 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry cutty, don't mean to rain on your parade, also I was saying ILM was "new" to me. Not in general. I'm aware its been around a few years.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 31 March 2005 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Almost all the discussions on this forum seem really intelligent and well informed to the point that it's rather intimidating to actually start posting here. I lurked a few months before I started posting, and even now I rarely add my .02 cents since in most of these threads, it's more like .02 pesos or something less valuable. I can't imagine too many people who generally wouldn't be welcomed by ILM are going to jump into the discussions. There's far too many other music forums that are surely more attractive for them.

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 31 March 2005 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

All of that seconded. Also, I'm new and haven't registered because I'm just super-cautious about online privacy. I always use the same nickname and (fake) e-mail address to post here. Is that problematic, or have I been creepy in some way unknown to me, or am I taking this too personally? I haven't started any threads or talked about M.I.A. at all.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think it's changed a ton, and I've been here since the Greenspun days.. Er, maybe now there are fewer women and more rock critics, and the span of topics for conversation seems to have cut out much of the space for talking about how certain bands/records affect one personally.

I'll be worried if the noize board gets too popular, though.
