It was widely assumed that the prince of darkness' famous tremors were the result of his drug fuelled past life, but it now appears that the condition is a medical one.

BeeOK (boo radley), Monday, 9 May 2005 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit, he's addicted to spicy ginger cake now?

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Monday, 9 May 2005 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought the shakes were caused because his doc put him on far too many meds, and they had subsided a few months ago? This is sad to hear.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 9 May 2005 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Or ginger-haired children's TV presenters?

(xpost)

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 9 May 2005 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

So when he crashed his quad-bike, was that a Parkin Ride?

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Monday, 9 May 2005 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Lock thread!

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 9 May 2005 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

oh shit, he must've had this for awhile, in Decline when he misses the glass with the orange juice - wow.

57 7th (calstars), Monday, 9 May 2005 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno - that shot in Decline is funny, but I also think its staged/fake. Note that its cut in rather abruptly with the other shots in the scene - ie, you do not actually see Ozzy pouring the OJ.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 9 May 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Eh, it's not like he's a guitarist or a drummer. He'll be okay.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 9 May 2005 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

That's sad.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 9 May 2005 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

In a few years, Ozzy Osbourne will look like Pope John Paul did towards the end of his life....

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 9 May 2005 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm like (Ozzy), "Thanks for fucking telling me"

BeeOK (boo radley), Monday, 9 May 2005 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, isn't this called "Parkinson's Disease"? Or am I just an idiot?

Penelope Spheeris admitted she faked the orange juice shot. That she'd intentionally humilitate a documentary subject like that is one reason I kind of think she's condescending scum (though I am glad for all the great quotes she gets from Kiss, Lemmy, Ozzy, etc. in the movie).

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Ozzy has always been an idiot and a fool. Parkin disease is Parkinson's, a hereditary form of it, there being a spectrum of causes for the syndrome. He has what was called in old times, "the shaking palsy" when no one knew what was the underlying cause and put the people with it in mad houses. He can call it "not Parkinson's" to entertainment reporters but that's what it is.

Harry Klam, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

He talks about it in this week's Mo-Jo.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

My friend goes to Ozzfest every year and was wondering why immediately put Ozzy in a wheelchair when he comes off stage. That's one of the reasons.

Harry Klam, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Long live Ozzy

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ozzy has also been seen using a walker for the past couple years. And an oxygen tank. So between the walker, the wheelchair and the oxygen tank, he's the the pioneer, the cutting edge and the icon for shitty metal by and for geriatric cases with creeping and progessive neurodegenerative illness.

Harry Klam, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

hey i heard ozzy is part wearwolf and that bark at the moon video was real and thats why he shakes is that true please let me know -- [email protected]

steve zeiss, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

It's probably true. The gene for lycanthropy in humans is closely linked on the chromosome structure to the parkin gene, activation of which causes Parkinsonism.

Te Ozzman's chronicle of medical woe and misadventure.....

Ozzy abused as child, elaborates on the shakes in 2003.

Ozzy on the ventilator.

A hospitalized Ozzy is wished well by well-wishers.

Ozzy sedated while ventilated.

Harry Klam, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

If he's such an "idiot and a fool", how come he's played a major part in several of the best rock albums ever recorded?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

cuz idiots and fools do the darnedest things!

I mean, James Brown is no intellectual/emotional prize pig either.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM!

Harry Klam, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah but harry you said he was "shitty metal" too...did you mean his later day albums or always...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

has Ozzy put out anything worthwhile since, oh... Bark at the Moon?

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

no, but how does that matter?

actually, I'm in the minority that likes Ultimate Sin alot.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Ozzy Inc. should pitch a new reality TV show, "Asylum," aimed at te kids, in which viewers follow a man - drooling, mumbling and beset with shaking palsy -- through his daily routine. Since, you know, the asylum is where people used to go when they were diagnosed with forms of Parkinsonism. It would shoot right to the top, I am sure of it.

Oh, wait...

Harry Klam, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

did you mean his later day albums

Yeah, except for te one where Brad Gillis was the hired hand guitarist and it was a live concert of all BS tunes released at the same time as BS's "Live Evil."

Harry Klam, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

never underestimate the Power of Gillis (TM)!

I think I'm getting what yr saying though, Harry, in that the whole Osbournes show was a pretty horrible exploitation of a doddering old man that was clearly not very well. The way Sharon trots him around is shameful. I feel bad for Ozzy, mostly.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, I am an idiot for missing Ozzy saying how it differs from Parkinson's. But still.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I now have "No Parkin' On The Dancefloor" running through my head.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

this whole Osbournes TV show thing has been a total tragic blunder for Ozzy, I'm afraid. Now we have his sub-talented family members as a constant media presence, while Ozzy himself has been completely diminished/turned into a joke. Sad. I mean, Ozzy once upon a time was genuinely scary/interesting. Now he's a punchline.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Ozzy himself has been completely diminished/turned into a joke. Sad. I mean, Ozzy once upon a time was genuinely scary/interesting. Now he's a punchline.

shakey otm.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

also, Rotten's line "a cheap holiday in other people's misery" at the beginning of Holidays in the Sun might be the most prescient lyric EVER.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, I am an idiot for missing Ozzy saying how it differs from Parkinson's

It doesn't differ. There are a spectrum of causes for the general medical collection of symptoms known as Parkinsonism. His disease, he claims, is hereditary; that is, he didn't get it by being punched in the head and knocked out repeatedly, for example. Now his claim that it's inherited my be true, but it's still "the shaking palsy," Parkinsonism.

How many people in the country have Parkinsonism? A lot. How many celebrities? Well, you know a few. Janet Reno. Michael J. Fox. Muhammed Ali. How many cynically made a hit show out of it,
parading around the country to the laughter and merriment of the stupid, signing and slurring the ballgame song, etc? Who has dignity in the human condition, no matter how frail? And who is just a pathetic ninny, who -- in a better world, would be swept out of the public arena for the pandering mass entertainment shtick?

Is Ozzy a role model for people with Parkinsonism? Did he inspire and make them feel good about themselves while he was flailing about, cursing interminably and stepping in dog excrement for the sake of a high profile TV career?

Harry Klam, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Ozzy himself has been completely diminished/turned into a joke. Sad. I mean, Ozzy once upon a time was genuinely scary/interesting. Now he's a punchline.

What? You mean when you were 10?

Unfortunate Prankster (Unfortunate Prankster), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. When I was 10 the popular stories about Ozzy were all the usual "ate a bat", "pissed on the Alamo, "is a Satanist" etc. "Children of the Grave" freaked me out the first time I heard it. why is this so surprising?

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just saying that you were 10. No wonder he doesn't seem as scary or interesting any more.

Unfortunate Prankster (Unfortunate Prankster), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

so you don't think there's been any actual qualitative change in Ozzy's public image since the TV show?

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure, he's more willing to admit he is a joke now. If he still pretended like it was real serious at his age, he'd be a big douchebag. The qualitative change is for the better at this stage in the game.

Besides, I like Ozzy and all, but he's never really been scary or interesting. A fairly transparent stage persona plus drugs.

Check out these scary and interesting lyrics:

Generals gathered in their masses
just like witches at black masses
evil minds that plot destruction
sorcerer's of death's construction

He sure could make lame words sound damn cool, though. I've always liked his voice.

Unfortunate Prankster (Unfortunate Prankster), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"willing to admit he is a joke now" /= always having been a joke.

Sorry, but those first few Sabbath albums ARE powerful/scary. Yes. They are. He did things to offend and shock people. He is no longer capable of such things.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

and this isn't just me and my childhood self finding Ozzy "scary" (see every meddlesome 80s Christian group ever) or "interesting" (see every heavy metal band since Black Sabbath, basically). His public persona is not what it once was. I know things don't last forever, but his has deteriorated in a particularly sad and pitiful way.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

No need to be sorry, we just disagree. The guitar is powerful, the theatrics powerful. Actually scary? No. They're not. He did things to offend and shock people like Jim Morrison, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, etc. It's all just about going another step further, isn't it? The bat head thing was accidental, according to the man himself. The bird head thing was probably a publicity stunt to give his failing career a jumpstart. The rest of the stupid stories sound like the wildman shenanigans you'd expect from a rich rock star alcoholic.

Unfortunate Prankster (Unfortunate Prankster), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

You've dodged the fact that Ozzy has been utterly contemptible for at least a decade.

Harry Klam, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 07:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it just me, or has Ozzy's interviews semed more intelligent over the past year?

Compared to his int with Frank Skinner, pre "Osbournes" where it was the usual "Tell us about the dwarf" tyype questions..

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 08:05 (twenty-one years ago)

You've dodged the fact that Ozzy has been utterly contemptible for at least a decade.

Do you mean contemptible personality or contemptible music? I like his personality quite a lot.

Wasn't it the combination of Ozzy with a great band that made him worth listening to? I think after Black Sabbath the only thing that was any good was the stuff he did with Randy. Most solo vocalists tend to suck once they split from a great band unless they also happened to be the main guitarist/songwriter.
