Just been knocked out by Rex the Dog

Not literally of course - although it might make a nice basis for one of his little cartoons. No, while I may be, ooh, several light years behind the curve, I've just heard 'Frequency' and its B-side, and was absolutely floored by it. Haven't heard anything this good since 'Timecode' (and I'm up to date on most of the Get Physical releases from 2005).

So, what other electro-housey records will produce the same rush? (and I've looked through the electro-bobbins threads, but am presuming that those cover a much wider spectrum of sounds). Looking for euphoric tunes with that on-E-without-having-dropped-a-pill feeling....

I also dug "I look into mid air" very much. For me it was somewhat reminiscent of the mighty Pet Shop Boys, especially their track "Flamboyant".

have you heard the Rex the Dog remix of "heartbeats"?

Jack L., Saturday, 7 January 2006 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Apart from the various Rex the Dog remixes of other people, stuff that strikes me as being in a generally similar vein to Rex the Dog:

1) Ada's "Lovelace" (monster monster MONSTER tune!) and "The Red Shoes"

2) Freeform Five - No More Conversations (Richard X Remix)

3) More generally, most Ewan Pearson remixes of the last three years or so (before we knew who Rex the Dog was a lot of people thought he was a Pearson pseudonym).

The above tend to sound more like "Prototype" than "Frequency", which is rave-rushy in a way that the electro-house rarely attempts without going ultra-dark (see Black Strobe's "The Abwehr Disco" for an "already done a bad pill" feeling).

Thnaks for the replies - just been listening to 'Frequency' again, and it's just SO rushy.... merely imagining this being played in a club around 5am brings me out in goose-pimples....THIS is what I listen to 'dance' music for...

The Rex dub mix of "Photographic" by Depeche Mode is also quite a rush.

I really like the 'E-Talking' remix, it sounds like "Rex on Autopilot"® but distills all his qualities.

The remix of Mylo is also pretty good for doing something different with a massively overplayed tune.

Check out the Rex threads here for more tips:

Mylo Drop The Pressure (Rex the dog remix)

And, finally, while I was in an obsessive Rex The Dog phase a while back, I came up with this tune:

For some reason I thought you were talking about Dr. Dog and was very confused about when they'd gone in an electro-house direction. Actually, I think "horrified" is more the word.
