Thanks beanz.

Obv delete my weary response as well plz.

I don't know. You do your utmost to pull yourself back into the world and the second you emerge, someone's there to kick you in the teeth.

No I am not a good sport. Yes I am probably hypocrite of hypocrites in terms of what I've done on these boards in the past. But especially today, this is by any yardstick totally unacceptable.

You're clearly a better person than I am in every way, lollerb8, and you hereby win the crown of Number One On The Internet.

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 25 August 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

i win!

Shithead anon posts like this should just be deleted asap.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 25 August 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

Well there are certain shithead "anon" posters who should just be deleted asap, but the moderators here appear content to let them go on untroubled and undisturbed.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 25 August 2005 08:31 (twenty years ago)

Oi Marcello stop having a go at the moderators, it's not our job to check this fucking place 24/7, I got into work, saw this thread, deleted the post as a personal attack, I'm sorry it was up for an extra hour while I brushed my teeth and commuted, next time I'll make sure there's a wire in my head which feeds mod requests in all the time.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 25 August 2005 08:41 (twenty years ago)

I do agree that anon posters are mostly cunts though and it's time to go registered-only in my opinion, as a trial at least. We can set up a 'loggedout' registered ID for the sensitive stuff.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 25 August 2005 08:45 (twenty years ago)

Thesedays I agree.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 25 August 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)

Me too. Last year I was against the idea, but all the inexcusable trolling that's happened lately has made me change my mind.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 25 August 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

I'd be all for it.

Oh Lord, My God, is there no help for the widow's son? / Kate (papa november), Thursday, 25 August 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

We can set up a 'loggedout' registered ID for the sensitive stuff.

Woudld this not just then become the target for trollers, if you see what I mean?

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 25 August 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

No, Teeny said on the ILE thread that you'd still have to login before using the "Loggedout" ID, and mods would still know who made that post.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 25 August 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure that's what Tom is suggesting. I'm not really sure what exactly Tom is suggesting, actually. I was suggesting an actual code change, and that would be up to our lovely code wizards to sort through.

Is all this discussion premature? Should a proper thread be started here or should I retitle the 'remember when ilx was good' thread?

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 25 August 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I think a new thread on the subject would be good.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 25 August 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

Oh don't worry what I suggested Teeny - your idea seems much clearer and simpler.

I'm not even a mod really - I just step in for admin when other people aren't about - I simply think ILE would work better registered but as unmoderated as possible.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 25 August 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

To see if people's moods have changed from last summer. I accept that ILX is no democracy, and if the people running the board decide to make ILE registered users only, then they'll just do it, but it's always good to hear what the board users have to say about the issue.

(x-post)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 25 August 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah and the only part of my suggestion that I think IS important is that this is a TRIAL - a month of registered-only, say, to give us an idea of how the board feels, and then we have grounds to actually decide whether it's better or not that way.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 25 August 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

Of course, people (and I'm sure they are regs) who do enjoy or want to troll/bait those who just constantly REACT to it will easily keep doing so with a reg-only model, you realise. They'll just register usernames to do it.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 25 August 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

It adds an extra level of hassle to the process for them, though Trayce - they have to find another legit email, wait for the password, blah blah. Mostly the trolls are regs, sure, but they're hair-trigger trolls, they do it because it's easy as much as anything else.

And sure some people react, some don't - I'm not really bothered, it's the climate where personal attacks are OK and fuck you if you can't take a joke that I dislike. Like I said in an email, I'd rather select by registration than select by thickness of skin.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 25 August 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

trayce it adds a speedbump. also surely the best argument for registration (i don't really think it's gonna make this place that much better, alot of the nastiness seems due to a sort of cabin fever and plenty of ilxors, including several on this thread (including me obv) have no problem being nasty to people's faces) is as an anti-spam measure.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Thats true, but tbh I've seen quite a few regs - logged in ones, sometimes - troll or outright insult people. Hell, I've had insults slung at me, not that I cared less (why would I care less if someone I dont know at all and have never ever spoken to on ilx insulted me? Why'd they waste their time, ha!).

And yeah I very much support register-only to prevent spambots, or else this place will become like a Usenet group when it is under attack from flooders/flamers like SNUH and the like. I think that issue is somewhat more pressing and relevant than a few pathetic petty words being slung about. Just my 2c tho.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 26 August 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but isn't 2c Australian worth about 1 yen?
(I keed, I keed!)

Heh yeah that was partly the point ;)
