do people still refer to boats as 'she'?

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Wednesday, 26 October 2016 10:57 (seven years ago) link

oh we've discussed that. My dad was a keen sailor and when i was young his friend told me that boats are always referred to as 'she'. he didn't strike me as the most progressive sort, but i guess he saw it as an endearing thing.

Of course, ships are named after all sorts of people (I want to say mostly male, but I don't know), but some people will insist on calling, for example, the Bismarck a she.

Drydocking at that time revealed that despite the years of neglect, her hull was still in remarkably good condition. In August she was renamed American Star, her propellers were removed and placed on the deck, the funnel and bridge were painted red, and ladders were welded to starboard. She left Greece on 22 December 1993 under tow, but the tow proved impossible due to the weather.

If you are capable of writing in English, how do you come up with something like that without repeatedly stabbing yourself with your quill?

I was wondering if those Les Pauls were seaworthy. Oh...

this reminds me of when i ordered a guitar amp but they had to cancel the order because the cargo ship it was on sank in the middle of the atlantic. i like the thought of my poor li'l amp still down there lying on the ocean floor

i'm irrationally embarrassed by point-missing Facebook replies to other people's posts. i.e. a friend of mine posted this story on Facebook...

http://www.theonion.com/article/third-grader-clearly-biting-more-he-can-chew-eleme-54478

...and one of her relatives said "well clearly the photo shows the boy is in a library and not at a book fair, i'm not sure what this story is going on about."

nomar, Wednesday, 26 October 2016 16:44 (seven years ago) link

haha yeah it's always the relatives missing the point and everyone just goes silent

everytime i see a movie trying to depict a made-up video game or viral video or merely "the internet", it's embarrassing.

observing bad job interviews. people making bad jokes during job interviews. we interviewed a donor relations/development person and during her presentation she made a joke about how alcohol is key to fundraising and it was kind of funny but by the end of the presentation she ended up making two more alcohol jokes and it reflected poorly. i felt very embarrassed for her

marcos, Thursday, 15 December 2016 21:40 (seven years ago) link

when people show videos they did not create as a filler during a job interview presentation

marcos, Thursday, 15 December 2016 21:40 (seven years ago) link

people showing video clips during presentations in general is usually bad

good: "here is our new marketing promotional video"

bad: "here is a video I made with my coworkers that is goofy and shows we are a team"

super bad: "so here we are in this all day session. I am going to show you a TED talk video"

mh 😏, Thursday, 15 December 2016 22:01 (seven years ago) link

i dunno... it gives me a chance to recover from the crippling embarrassment of actually giving the presentation myself

those twitter essays people link to and say "thread", how people start replying straight away and the person ignores all of them and just barrels on because they have 40 more tweets prepared, makes for a v awkward and embarrassing reading experience

I know that twitter convos will often involve some talking past people anyway but this reads particularly badly, it's partly the fault of the people who should know not to chime in mid-lecture but mostly the fault of the people who didn't say to themselves "hmm I guess it's not really an essay platform is it"

Betsy DeVos Ayes (darraghmac), Sunday, 12 February 2017 09:35 (seven years ago) link

I think in 2017 it is unfortunately no longer appropriate to keep twitter in a bag labeled innocuous

El Tomboto, Sunday, 12 February 2017 13:34 (seven years ago) link

I mean it's 2017, look around, who can afford to get embarrassed about anything? I don't think I feel this anymore.

Threads on Twitter are annoying. Please write a paragraph and don't bother getting mad at the one boob who replied while the manifesto is getting blorped* out one sentence at a time.

* thanks for this word VG

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Sunday, 12 February 2017 16:18 (seven years ago) link

yeah twitter blogging is def embarrassing

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 12 February 2017 16:19 (seven years ago) link

I'm never rapt, waiting for the next precious blorp. I'm sure they are trying to get people's attention in whatever way works but I think it has a short shelf life in terms of actual utility as a mode of communication.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Sunday, 12 February 2017 16:21 (seven years ago) link

It's tough to make a compelling argument when every sentence has to be a cliffhanger.

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Sunday, 12 February 2017 16:41 (seven years ago) link

I've found myself responding in a really half-assed manner (and thinking "why did i say that") when i'm getting immediate feedback on twitter. the fact someone is responding makes me want to fill the space in the conversation, and the notification that a new reply is there gives a little pavlovian boost

i really think massive tweetstormers and getting that boost from replying to themselves

Totally. I dunno why these people thing every single element on the screen has to be moving at once. You see this in TV shows all the time, someone logs in to look something up and there are windows popping up all over the place full of scrolling text in a 6-point font. Why do they spend so much time on this.

frogbs, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 13:43 (seven years ago) link

Or the other extreme where text being printed on the screen comes out one character every half second or so, accompanied by an audible beep.

That my family uses twice as many spoons than we do forks.

pplains, Friday, 14 July 2017 20:36 (six years ago) link

Really? I love that tbh. Ever since I'm with a Kurdish woman, forks have been non-existent, w/ her and her family, and now us, too. And I *get* it, now. A spoon and a knife are enough, forks have no function anymore and have been effectively rendered wholly obsolete and useless. This satisfies greatly for some reason.
