Well, I'll speak for myself, but I'd note that I can't see anywhere where Luna says it's not acceptable nor that it shouldn't happen on this thread - she said she disliked it and found it unpleasant. She's surely entitled to that.
For me, I haven't said it either, or even anything resembling it. I don't really see the point of the comparison, but I assume it's a male-female thing. I haven't talked about boners here. I don't mind if people do. I don't mind if people talk about periods either. These statements apply here and elsewhere. Kate's post rubbed me up the wrong way because of its tone of self-satisfaction, its smug ending about scaring the men away, not really for its graphic descriptions - but given that she believes she will upset people with it, why do it? Would it be an act of bravery, something to be proud of, if I offered lots of detailed description when I have diarrhoea, say?

Well, we all read things differently - my assumption is that Luna's is her reaction to it, not some sort of political statement, not any attempt to throw anyone off a thread, not some sort of banning of talking about periods. You're entitled to make your feelings known too, about periods, boners or anything else, and I don't know at all what the fuss is here. Do you think Luna did anything wrong? If so, what?
On a wider point, I am entirely in favour of talking about periods more openly (I had any number of mini-arguments with shop staff while buying tampons or sanitary towels for my wife, as the staff almost always tried to wrap them separately, either for fear of contamination or the shame of seeing them), and of course there are lots of men who are stupidly squeamish and scared of the subject. Trying to gross people out and scare them, as Kate said she thought she was doing there, seems unlikely to help, to me. (Not that she is under any obligation to try to address this, but you and she both seem to think this was part of what was happening.)

Firstly, it was by no means all she said - that was just the last sentence. We disagree on the undertones, and we'll have to leave it there, as we can't know.

Porn images are regularly removed as soon as a moderator gets near them, for example - they're a poor example of things that get wide approval, and a pretty good one of things that get instant censure.

Who are the people who are scared? And there have been a couple of people who found it unpleasant, but that is far from 'everyone is grossed out'. I think you want this to be a feminist issue, and I can see how that might have legs with some if I'd said what Luna did, but I can't see casting her as someone timid or anti-feminist or prudish or anything like that can play at all.
